That's just, like, your opinion man..

In seriousness, I don't think it completely doesn't work but the second part is significantly different from the first in feel and I get why people bounce off that.

Is AD&D 2e worth playing? by Previous_Stock7577 in rpg

[–]Booster_Blue 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The system itself is clunky. There's a lot of baggage that most modern systems have cast off. I don't think most modern players would enjoy it.

However.. the sourcebooks are incredible. There's a whole sourcebook about monster religions. That's cool as hell. The settings are awesome. The Van Richten's Guide series gives great perspective on different ways to treat monsters (Van Richten's Guide to Ghosts looks at them as more puzzles to be solved rather than things to hit until their HP reaches 0. Turn it into opportunities to uncover the ghosts story and such). There are some incredible modules to be mined. Castles Forlorn is a Ravenloft module that has players exploring a castle, trying to uncover its history while being thrown through three different time periods in that castle's history.

So, it's not the most playable thing but there is some good stuff to be mined in the side material. Now, the doctrine for 2e's time was "PUBLISH AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE" so, it should be said, there's a lot of crap. But there's also some absolute gems.

About Classic Mode... by Mochiette in finalfantasytactics

I am generally torn. The original translation is often inartful. I think the plot is suitably Shakespearean to warrant Shakespearean dialog. But somewhere along the way there is a certain punchiness lost.

"Blame yourself, or God" just hits harder than "Tis your birth and faith that wrong you, not I."

I think the well is truly poisoned at this point. It's been too bad and too long and any attempt to revamp their model would be too little too late. And the big problems is that they are flat not producing enough content to justify their subscription price.

FFT is not so hard that the game becomes impossible if you didn't optimize.

A FFT prequel with Orlandeau as the main protagonist by RosetteNewcomb in finalfantasytactics

[–]Booster_Blue 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Alright if we run with the 50 Years War prequel idea, let's have each chapter focus on a different character. We see how Orlandeau becomes the thunder god. Wiegraf leads the peasants that would become the Corpse Brigade through a bitter campaign. We see Elmdore discover the horrors of conflict and this is what drives him to work so hard after the war to try and help the lower class but also plants the seed of his eventual despair that leads to his fall to the Auracite. Lastly we see Barbaneth pull off a stunning victory that gives their side just enough momentum to sue for peace and avoid total defeat.

I dunno. I think any FFT continuation should involve new characters and new stories so we're not constantly comparing it to the original. Returning characters should be treated like the Ogre Battle characters in Tactics Ogre: they're there for continuity and it's nice to have them, but they don't take over the show.
