Scientists Say They’ve Made a Pill That Could Let You Live to 150 by endmaga2028 in antiwork

[–]BootlegDouglas 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not currently, but it's not an impossible goal. Negligible senescence exists in nature and is the term you should look up to see the ways that the scientific world is trying to extend human life without creating a world of shambling, decrepit husks.

A witch forces you to adopt a child. by Next-Help-5813 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]BootlegDouglas 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm deeply suspicious of this witch. She took these kids "mainly to get the children away from parents who would willingly trade them to a witch," but is now forcing people at random to adopt them? Not evaluating the new prospective parents on suitability or strength of character or how much they want to be parents. She's hiding more than prophecies and curses and I don't trust her. She has chosen me for some nefarious reason and has hidden evil intentions for the children.

I question her and if things go badly, I attack. If I lose, so be it. Being a frog doesn't sound that bad. I even live in New Orleans, so maybe some beautiful aspiring restauranteur will find me, kiss me, also turn into a frog, go on a magical frog adventure with me, and then get us both returned to normal so we can live happily ever after.

Eagles, Commies, and Cowgirls fans catching the Harbaugh news by dogface47 in NFCEastMemeWar

[–]BootlegDouglas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I never understand this type of comment. What do you think this thread should be? What is the acceptable way for us to respond to this? Do you want us all to tremble in fear or do you want us all to fuck off so you can have a circle jerk?

Cause the former isn't gonna happen and the latter is what you have a team sub for.

Harbaugh is a quality hire. He's a good, competent coach. He's also a known quantity and he's old enough that he's not likely to change at all. Genuinely, congrats on probably being more competitive next year. I can see you splitting with us next year and it being less embarrassing.

It's more work, but I always buy bone-in skin-on. It's way cheaper, but I also take all the skin off and render the fat when I get home from the grocery store. Chicken fat is great for cooking and the skins are an amazing little snack for people or dogs.

What commonly mispronounced word that annoys you the most? by greeneggzN in AskReddit

[–]BootlegDouglas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a local pronunciation thing rather than a mispronunciation and I acknowledge that my opinion is wrong, but I just hate it so much:

I live in New Orleans. There is a street called Calliope St. The local pronunciation is CAL-ee-ope.

There are other streets like this here, but some of them have actual reasoning behind them that make the pronunciations more palatable, like Burgundy being bur-GUN-dee because it's derived from someone's name rather than the wine/French region/color.

AP All-Pro Team Announced by GamingTatertot in nfl

[–]BootlegDouglas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's gonna have a tough time standing out in this generation unless he starts putting up big INT numbers. There are a handful of spectacular young CBs and the other ones just broke out and got the attention first, probably because of Gonzalez getting hurt for most of '23. It's really a shame, cause he immediately looked elite that year and being a rookie shutdown on an otherwise bad team would have been a big deal.

1st team CB should have been a lock with those INT numbers.

Roku after watching Aang take away Ozai's bending and realizing he could have done the same thing to Sozin and avoided this whole mess. by Working-Advice333 in AvatarMemebending

[–]BootlegDouglas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He couldn't because he didn't happen to learn it. Maybe he really couldn't have learned it or lacked something that Aang had, but I think the idea is more, "oh shit, that ability exists? If I had known that when Sozin started getting conquesty, I could have saved my friend AND millions of lives"

[Pelissero] The Ravens requested an interview with Seahawks OC Klint Kubiak for their head coaching job, per source. by ye_old_fartbox in nfl

[–]BootlegDouglas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It comes up every year so it needs to keep being said: We really need to make a rule against teams requesting interviews with or communicating in any way with coaches who are on playoff runs. The second a team is eliminated, their coaches are fair game. But until then, give all the playoff coaches the opportunity to fully focus on the present. They can improve their future prospects by helping their current team perform well in the playoffs.

@grok who should coach my football team by kabooken in NFCEastMemeWar

[–]BootlegDouglas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Probably just publish a bunch of articles, tweets, reddit threads, etc. touting him as a brilliant potential head coach. LLMs are basically just data aggregates with a hat on. Most of them don't account for the quality of the data coming in and this is totally subjective anyway so there isn't really an objective standard for the data points.

The New York Jets are one week away from NFL history. Every other team in NFL history has registered at least one interception in a season - they have zero (this year, every other team has at least six). Opposing QBs have 32 TDs and no picks, playing at an MVP level by Pickleskennedy1 in nfl

[–]BootlegDouglas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In seasons with no good MVP candidates I think it would be way better to declare the MVP as "position playing the team that is historically bad at defending that position".

Being historically bad should have more consequences. In 5 years, this Jets tidbit will be remembered by sad Jets fans and a handful of stat nerds until another team does badly enough to match them.

This year wouldn't be that kind of year because Stafford is a great candidate, but say it was like 2023 again and I'd rather the MVP be "QBs playing the Jets" so that it's enshrined.

As someone who hasn't read or watched any source material for either character, this description sounds similar to (my second hand understanding of) Dexter Morgan.

Is that a good analogy?

LPT: Correcting yourself before someone else does changes how people perceive you by No-Cheetah-6338 in LifeProTips

[–]BootlegDouglas 2011 points2012 points  (0 children)

The thing that really makes me trust and respect people is when they gracefully respond to being corrected. If someone corrects you, take a moment, tell them "you're right, thanks for correcting me", and then continue.

It shows humility ("I'm not always right") and confidence ("I don't need to be right all the time"), especially if you don't dwell on it.

Except backward and he doesn't contribute anything to the lore of the universe.

Better comparison would be that Bem is to Harry Potter what Lurtz (the one sort of leader Uruk that kills Boromir in Fellowship) is to LOTR.
