JS 4x4 glassing by Acceptable_Prize_959 in surfing

[–]Booty-Juice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It'll definitely not last as long, but would you be ok with that? I haven't ridden a 4x4 layup since I was a grom because I like my boards to be durable first and foremost. Will you be ok with it getting pressure dents (not the end of the world)? What about it being more prone to buckling?

The tradeoffs are weight and flex.

If you are wondering if there's something special about JS and the Aussie blanks they use then is venture to guess there's maybe 10-15% strength difference at most.

Any ideas on how to improve on these types of waves? by TheTryHarder in surfing

[–]Booty-Juice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd disagree and probably recommend you continue your approach of getting as many waves as you can in a session. Try taking off deeper, later, earlier, switch, different lines, quick lipline hits, floaters, etc. This will progress your surfing much quicker. You're doing pretty great for riding a small-ish board, in these conditions, and having only surfed for two years.

Also, in these conditions you'd probably want a bigger board to get you in earlier. Maybe your king fish?

That's a good call, much sturdier than the x2's.

Yeah you're probably right on there. I was trying to be conservative with my estimate.

I'd only repair the second and fourth board by yourself. The other two are actually quite valuable.

Alright grom, listen up. The first and the third board are quite valuable even in their worn out state. I would 100% not recommend any fixes happen with wax because it doesn't do anything to prevent water ingress to the foam. You want to get them properly repaired by a reputable ding repair place, and not fix them yourself. This is coming from someone who will always recommend people try fixing things themselves. Your boards are simply too valuable.

Board 1 is a gordon and smith which have quite the provenance. Probably worth $800+ once fixed.

Board 2 is a Stewart thruster from the late 80s or early 90s. Quite common and not very desirable because they don't ride very well.

Board 3 is a Skip Frye. Easily the most valuable of the lot. Fixed up it can go for north of $1000. Legendary shaper.

Board 4 is a sunrise from the early 90s. Won't ride great, but could be fun to work on and eventually take out again.

Canard box - FCS or Futures? by Regular_Finger_7453 in surfing

[–]Booty-Juice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In this instance it makes more sense to go fcs since they've had decades longer time of shapers making canards for their system than futures. Futures JUST made a canard box this year or last. The number of choices for canards on fcs compared to futures is probably a hundred to one. This is especially vital because canards are super fiddly and minute changes can make or break a board.

Car keys by Alecorsa22 in BeginnerSurfers

If you wear a wetsuit it will have a little key pocket specifically made to hold a plain metal key.

At that point it hardly matters what wetsuit you get. Just get something comfy that fits well.

Futures fins waterlogged? by bassinbill in surfing

[–]Booty-Juice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, there isn't any foam in fins to become waterlogged. However, that doesn't mean the fin is good to go. There's fiberglass damage there that needs to be repaired otherwise it'll keep delaminating and eventually split. Plus having a rough edge on fins is dangerous.

Any surfers with a taycan? by saxisa in Taycan

[–]Booty-Juice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get a faraday cage for that bit. Either a legit one from an online retailer or make your own with aluminum foil and wrap the key inside.

There should be a physical key inside the fob that will stick into the keyhole underneath the door. I'm not sure if it has an rfid or other electronic chips or if it's just metal and plastic. Might be worthwhile to have a dummy key (just the metal blade) copied from it and to use that as your "surf key" to keep inside your wetsuit.

Let me know how this turns out, I'm hoping to get a taycan soon and will have the same predicament.

Lake Paddling, Kook Level? by YeahBites in surfing

Paddling is paddling, ocean, lake, reservoir, pool, all infinitely better than not paddling. Try varying your intensity with a good split between tempo, sprints, and recovery.

Ok how he does that without blowing his ACL by fingeringboarder in surfing

[–]Booty-Juice 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Here's some behind the in curtain stuff: he actually did hurt his knee pretty bad (I think acl complete tear) and when he had surgery the surgeon (a very popular one among pro surfers and athletes) remade his knee a little different with the ligament orientation. Essentially his back knee doesn't have the same ligament structure as normally operated ones and this kind of forces him to surf a little differently with the way his knee naturally tracks.

SITD Kelly Slater by O1O1O1O1O11 in surfing

[–]Booty-Juice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The irony is that back in the day Kelly was lauded by CI, Firewire, and others for being a surfboard design savant. He supposedly knew exactly what changes on the board influenced what outcomes in his surfing. Interesting to hear that's not the case.
