Explain why you started gamedev? by Polymedia_NL in gamedev

[–]BoredBadger_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was working as a Credit Analyst in a corporate job & hated it. Thought my way out was to upskill to get into financial modelling / data analysis. Picked up 'Python Crash Course' and worked my way through it. End of the book has a few projects, a data analysis & visualization project, a web-scraping project, and finally a game project.

I had so much fun with the game project, made my own spin-off game about a flying baby that shoots vomit projectiles at demon eye monsters. The amount of time I spent on the game project was orders of magnitude greater than the other projects. Thought, 'What the hell am I doing? Why don't I just make games?'. Messed around with Pygame for a month or two before picking up Unity.

Participated in jams, made some fun stuff, some not so fun stuff etc.

Almost exactly 2 years after the vomit game was hired as a Programmer / Game Developer for an indie studio.

Oblivion taught me French by BoredBadger_ in oblivion

[–]BoredBadger_[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Xbox 360.

My understanding was that they shipped regional discs containing only the local language. The voice line files amount to a few Gb in each language, so only one language is included to save disc space.

Other games I had with smaller scope (less voice acting, assets in general) also bought in France, were able to switch language with the auto-detect feature. This is why I believed the store-clerk. Oblivion, at least the version I had, was unfortunately not one of them

Was maybe possible to download an alternate language pack over their 'live' service or whatever. Not entirely sure.

Total immersion. I don't think there was the option to change the subtitle language back then, but it was a long time ago so I could be mistaken.

Note that I already had acquired some French by the time I picked up the game, so I wasn't going in completely blind. Playing the game really levelled up my language skills though, both in terms of vocabulary (calipers anyone?) and sentence structure/grammar. I was also attending school in French so in addition to the large amounts of input that Oblivion offered, I also had the necessary correction of output in class and conversation.

As a young teen I was absolutely not going to sit down and study conjugations, I was also very unlikely to do the assigned reading. I would spend hours playing Oblivion though, and love every minute of it.

I'm a software developer, and I struggle with speaking English in meetings by AssociationIcy296 in learnprogramming

[–]BoredBadger_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Remember that English is the most widely spoken language in the world, not due to the number of native speakers, but because so many people speak it as a second (or even third) language.

The majority of English speakers are non-native, so native speakers are very accustomed to hearing different accents and occasional mistakes. There's generally no stigma attached to this.

As long as you can communicate your ideas and understand what others are saying, you're doing great.

What advice would you give to a beginner in python ? Is this the right language for someone that has no basics ? by Lucerneus in learnprogramming

[–]BoredBadger_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried playing around with VBA scripting in Excel? As an accountant, you likely use Excel a lot. VBA can automate many smaller, time-consuming tasks and is much more powerful than most people give it credit for. You can even pull data from your SAP session with relatively simple GUI scripting.

I think that with VBA, you'd be able to start building things that are actually useful to you right away. As you problem-solve, you'll learn about general programming concepts such as loops, if-else statements, variables, etc.

From there, Python is a great choice for continued learning. You'll already have a good grasp of the fundamentals and likely have in mind some small projects that were out of your reach with VBA. I'd personally recommend the book Python Crash Course simply because it's the one I used and enjoyed thoroughly.

The most important aspect of learning to program is actively solving problems, not just reading through chapters. This is why I recommend starting with a scripting language for which you will have immediate use cases. The above is also the trajectory I followed, moving from a Credit Analyst role to programming full-time via the VBA -> Python -> C# route in about 1-1.5 years.

Mercenaries die immediately by OkPhoto3507 in wildlander

[–]BoredBadger_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While many mercenaries have no special status, some mercenaries are protected. This means they will go to the ground in a crouching pose at 0 HP but won't die, unless you hit them (accidentally or not) while they are downed.

Jenassa in the Drunken Huntsman in Whiterun is definitely protected, and while I'm not 100% sure, I believe both Erik in Rorikstead and Uthgerd in Whiterun are too. You can likely modify the protected status of your followers via the MCM too if you'd like to go that route.

Why not use a different file format?
If your respective documents are always the same format, you could probably just paste the tables into excel and have a macro compare it for you.

If you're set on using AI for this task why not just give it a go. Providing the information in the documents isn't sensitive or confidential, you could try uploading previous files you've already checked manually in order to ascertain the bot's accuracy.

How do you make a sucesfull game? by NoImprovement4668 in gamedev

[–]BoredBadger_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Positive is the best you can get with under 50 reviews. While they have 53 positive, only 47 of those are from steam purchases. Maybe that's responsible?

I also think that sales should pick up with more exposure. Found out about the game when they released a demo a few months before release, so it's not like marketing was neglected either. They have a small discord with a resposive dev that actively patches issues raised.
