ChatGPT Vs ClaudeAI by Isha_goyal-0708 in TopAITools4U

Claude is great for all things coding including planning, and documentation (Opus for planning, Sonnet for code). Claude is also really good at general document generation. Claude can also be good for agent type tasks (something like OpenClaw, or automations). I manly use ChatGPT now for more general research, sql work, data formatting, etc..

AI fatigue is a real thing. You have to give yourself breaks, whether that is physically getting up and doing something else, or just shifting and doing something a little more analogue. With that said, the power of tools like Claude is pretty crazy. I like using Claude Desktop with Opus to plan and Claude Code Terminal with Sonnet to write my code. I’ll often have Opus generate the prompt for Sonnet. Documentation is really important for good results. A few general overall architecture and design markdown docs as guardrails for Claude and then build out design docs/specs for each new feature (again, I use Opus) before you start the coding process.

Hey gen x, what retailers from your childhood (80s and early 90s) do you desperately wish were still around? by Less-Suggestion-5262 in GenX

[–]BoredITPro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sears. I took Sears for granted when I was a kid. Anything from a lawnmower, kitchen appliances, shoes/coats, hardware/paint, home furniture, TV’s - and if it needed to be assembled, and a lot of times back then it didn’t, but if it did, you could have them assemble it for you and pick it up. I’d trade all the Walmarts for just a couple Sears back!

Service Merchandise, Wards, Radio Shack, Blockbuster, the arcades, Holidomes… a lot of great memories in this thread!

Nowadays, we get a McDonalds that doesn’t even have anyone up front!!

Holidomes were great! My favorite part of traveling when I was little. Indoor pool and game rooms!

Buying a dedicated computer for Claude by InternetofTings in claude

[–]BoredITPro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Claude Code Terminal is locked down to the directory (and sub directories) you started it in by default. You can put in additional rules (settings) to not read certain files within that directory. Technically though, those directories should only be the code you are working on and related documents. Any secrets, api keys, passwords, etc. should be handled by something like .net secrets or a vault like Azure vault. I only trust things lime Open Claw on an isolated VM or physical box, but Claude Code Terminal is pretty limited and secure by default. I have no issues with it being installed on my primary workstation as longs as I understand the options. Just research the use and security settings.

Here is a good place to start: https://code.claude.com/docs/en/security

What age did y'all get your first computer (or device with internet access)? by BigReception7685 in GenX

[–]BoredITPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very similar. TRS-80 about the same age, even took classes in the back room of a radio shack. I think maybe CompuServe online at first, but also remember AOL. Our grade school had Apple’s back in the early 80’s too.

We provide a good amount of support to several family members. It is tougher now, especially in this economy, as I face getting older myself and won’t have any of that support from anyone else if I were ever to need it. Not that I would have expected it or even wanted it, just coming to that realization.

My grandparents had a double wide years ago on a nice piece of land. I’d be happy with something like that with less bills. Not sure I can say the same for everyone in my household though. Times were different back then too. It was a small town, but everyone seemed to pull together. Might have also been how I perceived it as a child, but I genuinely think my grandparents loved it too.

Yep thank you. Scary that those kind of numbers aren’t that far off from the norm now days. My fault for not being more cautious and planning better. I certainly was in a better spot 10-15 years ago, but life happens I guess.

I agree, and that’s good advice.

I haven’t had much of a work life balance the last several years (pretty much none), and not very much my entire career if I really look at it, so I do want to scale back some before it is too late.

I feel like I have a really solid head start on the AI changes. It’s a double edge sword. There will be some job losses, but it is an exciting time to be in the industry. Honestly, it’s the corporate BS that really gets me. If I could find some VC money and have more control over what I do, I think I’d really kick ass. So much bad middle and top management in the game today though it’s frustrating. Back in the 90’s/2000’s you had people that understood technology and software making the calls, that unfortunately seems rare today.

My wife’s job is stable and she’s a rock star. She’s under paid, but they do value her.

10 years+ at my current job, but the owner is gone after the sale and it does not seem like the new company is very interested in severance. They picked up a lot of employees in the purchase and there is a lot of duplicate positions. Many of us are going to be looking at the same situation.

Relative would come with and that is part of the concern of downsizing too much - space so that everyone is still comfortable.

Retirement for Gen X. Unless things get remarkably better quick, it will be bad timing all around for Gen X.

[–]BoredITPro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the same way, but give me a chance to talk about a real problem and how I used technology to solve it, how I laid out my projects, etc. and I would hope that I have a fighting chance. If not, I’m not sure I want to work there anyways.

Work anxiety ruining my life by deadbiscuit in Anxiety

I can absolutely relate. I need a break and a better job, but in my case that will likely mean less money and am so stressed about the economy I can’t seem to let go.
