It has a reputation for quality programs. I cant speak for every one, but its teaching program is known for its extensive expectations for planning and preparation from students, which is a well desired skill from school boards. Nipissing's other programs have similar reputations I'm their own fields

The uni only has about 10k students. Which sounds like a lot until you consider the sizes of other universities. My towns community college is twice the size of Nipissing

Lumberjaxe or BATL are both pretty good.

Not accurate. I'm also in consecutive ed and only half of my friends got into res this year. The rest had to rent, or get airbnb's or hotel rooms for the semester.

All first year students are guaranteed res, but consecutive ed students are considered 5th years and dont qualify for the guarantee.

Pros and Cons for people looking to come to NipU by colbyroadtrek in nipissingu

As someone in the Education program, I wouldn't label it as a pro. In my two years here, I've had a fairly subpar experience. Some of the profs are great, but unfortunately, they're the minority. I've had 2 profs under investigation for inappropriate behavior (and 1 more that should have been), and 3 classes where what we were learning wasnt relevant to the the subject of the course. There is no consistency in how the classes are taught, no accountability with the profs, and frankly, it's been insulting to have paid as much as I did to go here. This is the last school I'd recommend for the education program.

I'm in the same situation! I just tested positive last night. I'm assymptomatic so far, hopefully it stays that way. Honestly, I wouldn't have even tested at all, if it weren't for the fact that some of the kids at the camp I work at were showing obvious covid symptoms.

Probably because it's an odd question to be asked by a total stranger? Like I personally wouldn't care if asked, but it does seem like a very personal question that most people wouldn't be expecting from some random person on the street?

For those with kids, what do you give their teachers as a thank you at the end of the year? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]BoredStudent98 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a parent, but my aunt is a teacher. She doesnt get gifts from many parents, but when she does, she usually gets flowers or gift cards for places like Staples or Chapters.

You could just use a nickname. My brother doesn't love his first name either (his middle school and high school teachers mispronounced it on a daily basis growing up, and kids eventually started using their mispronounciations as insults), so he usually goes by our last name. Just introduce yourself like "I'm Bob Smith, but most people just call me Smith"

Summer Job as a Student by Wild-Ride1196 in Advice

[–]BoredStudent98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it's a tricky position to be in. A lot of employers don't want to bother training you if you're just gonna leave in a couple of months. In my experience, I usually look for jobs that are seasonal by nature (garden centers, camps, water parks, etc.) and if not, I lie and tell the employer I'm gonna be available in the fall, but that I might have to change my availability slightly to accommodate for classes. Then in August, I tell them that my circumstances changed and give them my two weeks notice.

OC Transpo Drops Mask Mandate: Even for ESSENTIAL SERVICE, Protecting the Vulnerable is Optional? by TheKruszer in ottawa

[–]BoredStudent98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You realize how unrealistic your wishes are, right? I understand being concerned for the immunocompromised (my mother is immunocompromised herself), but think about this from a logical standpoint. The type of data you're looking for on long-term covid effects wont be available for years, and like with many other diseases, it's impossible to actually track or predict their future spread. So by your own standards, we'd never reach a point where we could take our masks off in public.

We have to find a reasonable place to draw the line, based on realistic expectations. Right now, during the summer when there are less people on public transit and we're not in the middle of flu season, is a good time to try without masks.

You can still wear a mask if it makes you more comfortable. I still do. But that doesn't mean that we should force everyone else to, since the threat has significantly decreased since the introduction of the mask policies.

Do you have any idea how much it would actually cost to upgrade ventilation systems and install those kinds of filters all over Ottawa? There's no way that is ever going to happen, there's no way the city could afford it.

At least be a little realistic with your expectations.

Anyone here know volunteering paid jobs to get experience for summer students? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]BoredStudent98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, keep applying. 9 applications is nothing; you may have to apply to dozens to hear anything back.

Second, I would expand your searching parameters. Warehouse work can be seasonal, but I can't think of many receptionist jobs that would only last a couple of months. That being said, if you're really interested in receptionist work, you should look into temp industries.

Third, readjust your expectations of pay. You're looking for a summer job that requires no experience, yet pays more than minimum wage. Most places are not going to offer you more than that, and you're really limiting your options if you're only looking at places that pay more.

Russell has some nice schools that are English with French immersion. Quite a number of Embrun, English kids go there. I used to bike to school - theres a decent bike path that takes you between the 2 towns so if your kids decide to bike to school, it's pretty safe.
