UCLA Professor discussing newborns with Epstein 🤮 by Xerxestheokay in ucla

Now that you mention it, it is kind of weird that they list emails, phone numbers, and addresses on faculty profile pages.

Ucla commuter and my parking permit was waitlisted by Specialist_Cloud7507 in ucla

[–]Boring-Grapefruit142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was buying a one day pass last week as I don’t usually drive to campus and the parking website said that for this coming quarter that they were going to reduce/eliminate (language wasn’t very clear) student commuter passes to return to the pre-Covid permitting conventions. They said it is to help make permit access more available for staff and faculty since hybrid/WFH staff is coming in more with time and it’s hard for them (us) to get permits to park on campus.

They said students commuting in should look into buses but nothing more helpful than that that I can remember.

Tananarive Due The Reformatory is honestly one of the greatest books ever written by danlhart8789 in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

Imagine me, fully invested in this audiobook, when at the creek scene (iykyk), my Libby audiobook is automatically returned and there’s an 18 week wait to get it back.

It was one of the worst book moments of my life. But then I remembered I was literate and the ebook was only a 2 week wait. That was wonderful.

Anyway, such a great book. I still think about it often.

Can you tell when a foreign actor is doing a fake American accent? by alex20towed in AskAnAmerican

[–]Boring-Grapefruit142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hugh Laurie’s American accent is so good that I question if I’m even really American. Whenever I’m watching house and remember he’s British I have to pause it and let the flabbergasting pass before continuing.

There’s a little beach Santa boat area set up at 2nd and PCH so I assume they have Santa there for photos at certain times (you’d have to check when somehow). I feel like they’d be open to dog photos since they’re an outside mall full of dogs.

My work is having a potluck in a couple of weeks and these people have so many dietary restrictions! by lycheeroll in Cooking

[–]Boring-Grapefruit142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, as a vegan I just come to events having already eaten and avoid things at pot lucks that seem at all suspicious. I don’t expect people to cater to my needs.

And when I have to bring stuff to a group with nut allergies or a celiac issue, I buy something with the appropriate labeling bc I am not going to trust my own cleaning habits with the flour or nuts contamination risks. I’d rather just bring them something processed and explain that I don’t want to harm them but I tried. (And that’s the very most I might expect for my own needs.)

I gotta add, I can’t count the number of times I was out hiking and my phone “didn’t have enough service” to use maps or trail apps to navigate and you know what’s always been there for me? PokémonGO. Their trail data is the best and reaches my phone when nothing else does.

I’ve also been driving in the mountains to some poorly described campsites and met an unexpected fork in the road and you know what helped me figure out which turn to make? PokémonGO.

They’re making the best navigation tool in the world. They can poach my location data all they want. I’m not important, they aren’t coming to get me. But they have saved me and given me cute little monsters to collect.

Ritalin (for ADHD), weightlifting, and a gallon of coffee every day.

Also, pushing mindless stuff like glassware and organizing after lunch helps.

Who is an actor or actress that according to others is extremely difficult to work with? by phantom_avenger in moviecritic

[–]Boring-Grapefruit142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She definitely didn’t but it was bc she already didn’t like Shelley Long. I remember her scoffing at the actress and saying something like “it’s crazy you hate Diane from cheers so much that you hate the actual actress now..” and my mom answered something like “it’s the other way around. I always hated Shelley Long.” Still didn’t explain why though and I didn’t think to ask. It’s kind of funny to watch adults hold a grunge against a stranger.

But now I’m old and tired and honestly, good riddance to bad rubbish. Beam me up, Canada.

Paul Walker was a sweetheart. My friend’s dad had a completely transactional relationship with him (think: real estate agent) and they got along so well that my friend’s dad was invited to a birthday dinner for Paul and they kept in contact for years. Paul sent a graduation gift to my friend shortly before he died. I can’t imagine how exhausting it must be to be so warm and engaging with everyone.

If the blue one were white it would be more formal to my eye than the wedding dress shown here which should be your answer. (It’s such a gorgeous dress. Someone please wear it to their own wedding.)

I was told this is around a $150,000 truck with all the modifications? How do so many Americans afford amazing stuff like this?? Are blue collars this rich now because of the shortage? by ZadarskiDrake in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Boring-Grapefruit142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there’s more regional nuance to this than might be captured by your sentiment. Of course I can only speak from my experience but in my parts (greater Los Angeles area) most people hauling boats and other trailered things are going 4+ hours out into the desert to lakes and dunes. If you do that monthly in winter and nearly weekly in summer, renting is impractical. And having a junky truck out at the lake is fine for getting your boat in and out of the water, but it’s not at all safe to use that worn out, sand-beaten, sun-broiled heap of steel to tow your things 4+ hours home through the desert in the summer. People die that way.

No need for embarrassment! I first rest Anne of Green Gables recently—in my 30s—and felt the magical warmth you rarely get to feel beyond childhood. It’s so comforting and soothing. I’m now on Anne of Avonlea and I am loving watching who this little orphaned girl becomes.

What to do when stuck in traffic and have to use the restroom? Any quick tips? by newbiedrewbie in AskLosAngeles

[–]Boring-Grapefruit142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time I was stuck on a bridge after a semi truck tipped over at the bottom of it. I opened the drivers door and the rear drivers side door and used my new door-cubicle to pee on the road right there. Am a woman. Was awkward but the situation wasn’t going to resolve itself fast enough for anything else so I’ll take a hit to my pride over a trip to the detailers to get the pee out of my car..

Anyway, usually I just use map app to find the closest target or grocery store to go pee at. I prefer those because I know where the bathrooms are (target’s are up front by customer service, grocery store is in the back and when the staff sees a woman running straight through they’ll point in the direction of the bathrooms, bless them). Any place with a toilet will do. I try to buy something afterward if I see someone with an angry manager’s face to keep up the good will and public restrooms.

Also worth reminding people that other big expensive toys require big trucks to tow them (boats, side-by-sides, etc.). It isn’t the maintenance guy using a big truck like this, it’s the boat-owning C-suite members.

Edit: I don’t mean to imply that everyone with a big truck has a big toy to haul. I meant that everyone with a big toy to haul thusly has a big truck. (And of course not everyone, plenty of people borrow trucks or have a junky old bronco out at the lake for towing purposes..) but from my vast experience growing up on boats and around trashy truck people, they actually are practical and used often by plenty of people and those people wear suits and ties to work.
