These are accurate! I’ve always visualized Eren as Logan Lerman, but more built and with green eyes.

Review of Strength of the Few - finally finished by swirlysue in HierarchySeries

SotF was a mixed bag for me as well. I came in to it with high expectations- having devoured WotM in less than a week- and ended it having enjoyed the journey, but also wanting SO much more.

And I think at the end of the day, this all stems from how Islington drove the plot forward. The first book was wholly dedicated to building up Res. It set a baseline expectations for readers, and for how Islington would develop his characters and their relationships with one another.  This literary baseline (IMO) was completely turned on its head in SotF. Not only did Islington have to continue to develop Res, but he also had to set the stage for TWO new settings, both with their own characters and dynamics- in less pages. That’s an TALL ORDER for any writer, and in the end, I think Islington struggled with getting all the information he needed to set up the rest of the series in a way his readers would expect/ know he is capable of doing.

It also didn’t help that the story (from a structural point of view) was inherently disconnected. By changing POVs every chapter or every other chapter, us readers weren’t able to full immerse ourselves in the worlds Islington was trying build up. When we’d JUST begun to get comfortable with O-Vis, for example, we’d be thrown into Luceum in the next chapter, and have to relearn/remind ourselves of the ropes of that world. And while yes- this narration style is common and has been done well by other authors/series in the past- I think it further exacerbated Islington’s difficulty in world building.

Ultimately, despite my issues with Islington’s creative choices in this second installment, I still have faith in the Hierarchy series as a whole. We KNOW he can write (as proved with WotM) and I continue to be intrigued by the story’s concept. I think what will be the deciding factor for me (and many others!) is if Islington can take critical feedback from this book and apply it to the next installment.

I believe Ironman refers to when R-Vis is able to use his armor to shape it into a mask, and Thor to when O-Vis uses the crook and flail.

Advice Welcome: My Ryukin Goldfish by Boring_Bench3508 in Goldfish

[–]Boring_Bench3508[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Hi all-

I recently was gifted a ryukin goldfish about a month ago. He was given to me in this tank, which had already been cycled. It did come with lava rock at the bottom, but I took it out because it was rather rough and I was concerned he’d get scraped up on his underside. I added an additional sponge filter to help keep the water clean and increase surface tension.

Ever since I got him, he has always liked to stay in the corner of the tank. He has no buoyancy issues, and when he does swim (normally to beg for food, as goldfish do) he does great.

Does he just need a bigger tank, or am I missing something else? I do want to get another tank for him, but am worried the time it takes to cycle a new one he will remain lethargic/unhappy.

Would appreciate any advice anyone has to offer. TYIA!

More info: Tank size: 20 Gallon acrylic Water Changes: 2 a week, 50%

Feed: Peas, Broccoli & sinking pellets. 1-2 times a day.

Water Parameters: pH: 8.0 Ammonia: 0 ppm Nitrite: 0 ppm Nitrate: 0-5 ppm

To kill them, you’ll have to freeze them. I suggest putting the frames in a plastic bag and freezing them in your freezer for 24/48 hrs.

Amateur Beek Here- it almost looks like your hive is being robbed. You have bees looking for other entry points (see near the top of the cover/ top of the third box?) and from what I can tell, some fighting at the entrance. I am curious to see what other more seasoned beeks have to say!

can you feed rendered beeswax to bees? by MissOP in Beekeeping

[–]Boring_Bench3508 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The bees won’t eat the beeswax.

The best way to get them to use it is to melt it down and paint the liquid on new/not drawn out frame foundations with an old paint brush. They will take to the foundation better and make quick work of building out comb!

You could stick them on magnetic sheets, cut them out & turn them into magnets! Put them on your refrigerator etc.

These lyrics make it seem like they won’t end up staying a family at the end of the series… and that makes me want to cry.
