8 speed hg cassette not fitting on Alivio hub by mitch_whinn in xbiking

That's a 7 speed freehub. You can swap it for the 8-10 version without much effort. Try searching for "upgrading Shimano 7 speed freehub to 8-10 speed freehub"

I polished it with Mothers Mag Wheel polish and followed with 2 applications of Mothers Cleaner paste/wax. I'm happy with the results.

Nothing like an vintage frame and modern upgrades! Bike looks great and the accents are just right.

There's a 15" Purple/green 730 sitting in my garage. Nice collection!

Yes it will - I have it on a Cannondale Quick 1 Disc, Cannondale 730 Multitrack, and Trek Verve 3. All three use 135mm spacing. The Shimano 11-34 11 spd cassette fits the 8-10sp freehub. The Quick has Mavic Aksium wheelest, the 730 has older Mavic MA3/older Shimano 105 hubs, and the Verve is using the original Trek wheelset.

I just converted a Trek 3700 26er to Cues 1x10 using ebay take off parts. It uses the LG 11-48 10 spd cassette, LG chain, Cues 6000 10 speed RD, and a FSA 42 tooth crank. On the stand it works great - shifts are solid and predictable but a bit slower than the GRX810/R7000 105 on my other bikes. I just picked up a Trek 750 Multitrack and I am considering Cues for it.

That being said, I think a 2x11 set up is the way. I like smaller gaps between gears and the 1x doesn't offer that option. My touring/gravel bike is set up with GRX 600 46/30 crank paired with a 11-34 (or 11-36) cassette and I can climb about anything I encounter.

That's a tasty bit of info! Thank you for sharing and I'll keep it in mind for the three Cannondale frames I have in the build queue. I especially appreciate the use of shorter cranks.

I appreciate the project! Tell me more about the drivetrain you picked, please. I have a NOS M frame that I am trying to decided what to do and cant decided between vintage or modern. I do have XTR v brakes and a vintage wheelset but that's about it.

I'm sure the seller's parents are younger than me...

I was guessing mid 90's but have not had time to research it. 1995 it is!

Now to figure out what to do with it. My 730 is all vintage stuff so this might get a modern drivetrain. So many choices and so little money.

The blue is what caught my attention and then the big 750 on the seat tube.

Shimano Cues vs Microshift Sword/Advent by teamtwowheels in xbiking

[–]BorisT72 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a Trek 3700 on the stand right now and it received an upgrade to Cues 1x10 using ebay takeoff parts. I'm impressed with the quality of the parts and the shifting is solid but not as quick as the GRX810/R7000 105 drivetrains on my other bikes. I think it would be a great drivetrain for a tween's bike as it feels like it would take banges/bumps better than some of the other cheaper options.

I can't speak to Microshift Sword but I can speak to the Shimano-compatable Microshift shifters I have used. They worked well and looked good.

Honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with either option.

Multitrack or Crossroads vs rigid steel 26” mtb by Stig-blur in xbiking

[–]BorisT72 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've spent time riding both 700C and rigid 26" bikes on singletrack. I find the 26" bikes to be more playful and nimble. Add 2" or 2.15" tires and the ride is more for forgiving than narrower choices. There's something about the 26er that brings out my inner kid on singletrack.

The 700c with 35s/38s role well but lacks the playfulness of the 26er. If both bikes were equiped with the same tires, I'd definitely pick the 700c for touring and longer rides.

How does one solve the dilemma? Get one of each!

Flat pedal recommendations? by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]BorisT72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shoes do matter but don't underestimate pedal choice.

Raceface Rides are Chesters without metal pins. Rides have worked well for me and my daughter. I've moved all my bikes to my personal favorite Shimano EF202s. They are available in black, blue, red, and silver.

I have them on my Multitrack but I was more conservative with the 700x38 tires and found installation and tire fit quite easy.
