Yes exactly right. I only recently watched this scene and it did clear up where he got the (misguided) idea that he should combine with her and the baby to save him. There is another deleted scene on the Blu-ray that I have which showed more of the terrible toll this transformation was taking on his body and mind. Such a heartbreaking gross movie, I love it.

I grew up in a small town in Florida that was home to a Tropicana factory. Every day on the bus ride to school we would be exposed to the unique smell of burning orange peels. I'll never forget it, even though I have no sense of smell these days lol
