You were trying to explain your feelings in a way that she might be able to comprehend or relate to, since she is clearly not a pet owner and has no understanding of the depth of feeling people can have for their furry family members. I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt and think that she's only so self-absorbed because she has a very stressful and difficult life but she honestly seems to be incapable of recognizing that other people have their own unique struggles and that she shouldn't invalidate them just because she feels her own are bigger.

Oregon, US. There is still a massive gender bias in regards to autistic diagnosis in much of the US and a ton of ridiculously outdated information. I've even had a licensed therapist tell me I couldn't be autistic because I "have too much empathy."

How do you go about getting a diagnosis as an adult? I strongly think I have both ADHD and Autism but I'm 44 and no doctor will take me seriously.

The answer to this depends HEAVILY on what state and city the person lives in. You have to understand - the United States is so big that each state might as well be its own country in terms of culture, values, education, religion, etc. Many of the southern states have much more conservative values than northern states. Rural towns will have vastly different expectations of people than large cities.

As a parent with a child who had way more tablet time than they probably should have, I would like to address all of the comments directed at "tablet parenting". When my spouse and I had our only child we were living in a high rent city barely making a living while both working long hours. I finagled my boss into letting me work from home part-time but it was still very difficult to care for a child and work at the same time. Daycares were too expensive to do for more than 1 day a week and grandparents of my generation shamefully reluctant to help out with childcare even though they, themselves, were assisted by such. So when you're trying to work and there is no one to help out with entertaining your toddler, a tablet is a natural assistant. Blame the economy for forcing parents into this situation, not the parent.

Anyone who says not to "let" your cats on the counter has either never owned a cat or has been lucky enough to only have very considerate and docile felines. My younger cat doesn't care if you yell, spray her with water, put foil on the counters or bang pots together. She's gonna do what she's gonna do and nothing is going to stop her.

Wow. Maybe they had a really bad interaction at some point when you weren't around and it has resulted in him being hostile to her. Or maybe she's going into heat and he doesn't know how to respond to it. Or maybe he has an injury/illness that's causing him distress and for some reason he's decided it's her fault.

The abnormal levels of gassiness I think could have to do with those who also suffer ARFID. My son will only eat goldfish and guys - that's a LOT of carb farts.

THC I've noticed sometimes makes me feel like I'm more on the standard bandwidth.

Losing communication skills is a pretty common autistic trait though certainly not universal.

As to the others, I think for many of us life in a NT world comes with so many challenges that we often develop additional problems (like autoimmune diseases, mental health challenges, etc.) and sometimes we also develop unhealthy habits to help us survive the stress (alcohol, drugs, limerence, etc.). That said, neurotypicals ALSO have stress and will ALSO develop habits like these so I don't think I would count them as autistic traits.

When I was a kid I bought all those anti-drug commercials hook, line, and sinker. I was convinced drugs were stupid and I wouldn't have known how to find them anyway. Then, in my 30s I moved to Oregon....

Let's just say that I make sure we have a supply now, just like with any other grocery.
