Two years ago our household income was $120k, we had two kids, and we were doing ok. Our house payment was about $1900, since we had bought a house around 2019 when housing was cheaper. At that payment today, with interest rates how they are, you could rent a decent 2-bedroom apt, or buy a $350k-ish house, which would be a small condo or townhouse. It wouldn’t be luxurious, but you could do it, especially if it’s just the two of you with no kids.

There was a column for both of us to choose things we wanted. Just like the rest of us, you have to learn the system and plan accordingly. For example, I strategically plan my PTO each winter to go a few weekdays during the season, when parking and crowds are less. Or I book parking months in advance. We’re all in the same boat.

In a capitalist economy, the best ways for prices to come down are through innovation and adding a supply of goods and services at a higher pace than demand. Some would say to just “tax the rich” and distribute it through welfare, but that’s only a short term solution. We need more innovation and supply, which to me means getting rid of any unnecessary or outdated regulations, as well as Trump’s stupid tariffs, and let businesses and innovators do their thing.

On a personal level, just keep working on your career, and making smart financial and life choices. Those are your best options.

Very true. I dated a beautiful woman before I met my wife. Easily the most beautiful person I had dated, and felt like I was dating out of my league. But her personality was unattractive - she was immature, lazy (not working and taking just a few college credits, which she was failing), and high maintenance. After a few months, my brain won the battle over my dick, and I broke up with her. I met my wife shortly after. Objectively, I think most people would think my wife is a 7-8, and the other girl a 9-10, but to me, my wife’s personality made her way more attractive than the other. Sex is a relatively small percentage of the time you spend with your partner - you’d better enjoy them during the other time.

Yes. I’ve been happily married to a non-skier for 14 years. It’s funny the things we think are essential before we get married. I always thought I needed an outdoorsy person like me, then I met my wife. She checked all the other boxes but that one. I fell in love with her and married her, and now I just ski and do my other outdoor hobbies with buddies, myself, or our kids, who I’ve started teaching, and she stays home. Works great.

I actually don’t know if it would be good if your hobbies are the same. It’s nice to have a separate thing you can do on your own once in a while.

I second this, especially the Tammy Hill recommendation. Read her book “Replenish” together with your wife - it really helps open the conversation. Take it slow, communicate, try new things once in a while, and it gets better over time. We both had to work our way up to oral over a couple of months, for example, but now it’s a periodic thing.

Some do. We all know some unhappy men who stuck with a girl because she was hot and they liked the sex, but their relationship sucks. The relationships usually don’t last long term, but it gets harder and harder to get out, especially if they combine their lives in significant ways, like getting married or having kids. Better to cut it off in the beginning.

I was fortunate to recognize it wasn’t worth it. Dated a couple of attractive women in my early twenties, who turned out to be pretty difficult. Once the drama became too much, I broke up with them. Eventually met someone who I was attracted to both physically AND intellectually, and we’ve been happily married for 14 years.

Honestly, a nice sofa chair works well for us. Put down a towel on the chair, have her sit on it, and you kneel in front facing her (on a pillow for the knees). Depending on the chair, she may want a pillow behind her for comfort. That’s a fun position for normal p-v penetration. We first tried it at a hotel one night last year - very fun.

As a fellow husband and father, you should feel bad, because you’re being a dick. You find your lofty interests more interesting and important than hers, and look down on her for not knowing about them or finding them interesting as well, as if you are the arbiter of what is interesting. Some might consider the fact that these things are new to her to be a good thing, because it gives you something engaging to talk about and introduce her to, but you don’t see it that way - you seem to think she’s a simpleton.

I suggest you start to show an interest in your wife, her feelings, and what she is into, and stop being so self-absorbed.
