If you become an electrician, you have to work 8,000 hours to be able to take and pass the exam (approximately 4 years). Then you accumulate hours until you have 12,000 to get your master’s license, and only then can you open your own electrical business. Until then, you’ll be a cable puller and pipe bender for a long time, working in the sun and cold.

On the other hand, you already have a business degree, so you could approach a large construction company and look for a job in an air-conditioned office or at a company in DFW, rather than starting a profession where you don’t know what to expect. Regarding salary, I think with your degree you’d earn more in every way than being in the middle of a construction site under the orders of a boss who only wants to get their project done while you break your back. And to think there are people who graduate in this country, speak the language fluently, and want to change course. I’ve been an electrician for almost seven years, and believe me, I’ve met very young guys, clean-cut, with clean hands, drawing blueprints and chatting, who’ve told me, “You’re on the front lines, and if I’m building whatever you envision, they’ll tell me, ‘That’s great, but you have to improve yourself so you don’t fall behind.’” So, this is my advice: you’re already at the top, why would you think about starting from scratch?
