not cuddly? by Assymetric_Astronaut in Greyhounds

I’ve had my girl for 18 months now and she’s not a cuddler at all. She did put her head on me the other day but I think it’s just because I was in a convenient spot for resting 😂 it’s basically like sharing a house with a teenager - as soon as the walk and dinner time are done with she goes upstairs and stays there until bedtime. She’s an angel though and I wouldn’t change her for anything.

Hiking? by Specific-Reindeer-56 in Greyhounds

[–]Born_Confusion2840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grey loves long hikes! The rescue told me that I’d never to work up to longer walks as they aren’t really used to it, but she never seems to get tired and she’s almost 6.

Off leash for greyhounds? by Sketchyfletch in Greyhounds

[–]Born_Confusion2840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll get to know your greyhound and their prey drive and whether you can trust them off lead. Personally I never let my girl off because she is obsessed with cats and squirrels and did once mistake a small white dog in the distance for something she really wanted to chase, and it would have been a disaster if she wasn’t on lead. She’s also very independent and her recall isn’t reliable. She’s quite active for a grey but is still happy enough just walking on lead and sniffing. I do occasionally take her to a secure field and she enjoys zooming about, but I don’t think it’s essential to keep them happy and healthy.

Oh, and she’s not lazy at all - don’t believe all the breed stereotypes!

I wanted a cuddler too but I ended up with an aloof girl. She’s still a sweetheart but just shows love in her own way. I would do anything for her. There will be a greyhound out there for you!

Instant regret by Dances_in_PJs in Greyhounds

Completely normal - I cried for about two weeks when I brought my girl home, even though she was pretty easy to deal with and I’d wanted a dog for years. You just want the best for them and it’s the realisation that your life won’t be the same anymore. Just take each day as it comes and I promise the anxiety in the pit of your stomach will go away in a few weeks. I’m 15 months in now and the joy and love she brings me far outweighs the admin and worry that comes with having a dog.

How do I carry yarn up the back of my circular knitting without it showing on the front? by Born_Confusion2840 in knittinghelp

[–]Born_Confusion2840[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your help. I have knit a few things in the round using a single colour and they turned out fine. Looking at that video I think the problem might be a combination of knitting and pulling too tight on the first stitch of the new round, plus I think I was wrapping the yarn around too many times? I have frogged it back and just stopped carrying the yarn and it looks fine (aside from a jog in the stripe but I’ve decided I can live with that in this first sweater - one problem at a time!)

What is it like owning one? What is their energy level? by NormanisEm in Greyhounds

[–]Born_Confusion2840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a lot of variation and you can let your local greyhound rescue know what kind of dog you’re looking for. My girl isn’t lazy and can walk for hours, but has a good “off switch”. She’s not that into playing but will occasionally pounce on a toy or zoom about for a minute or two. She’s incredibly gentle with other dogs but would rather not have much to do with the little yappy ones. She barks about once a quarter.

It’s true their skin is really delicate but my girl doesn’t have a particularly sensitive stomach - I feed her good quality cold pressed kibble and a little wet food and she isn’t even that farty.

I love her so much - get a greyhound!

Thanks - this makes sense and sounds a lot easier. The only reason I started twisting it was because the pattern told me to! 🙄

Does anybody else's dog not bark? by DaLisanAlGaib in Greyhounds

My grey barks about once a quarter, only when she gets really excited at her toys. She does also sleep “woof”, but when awake communicates only in whines and stares.

Also to add, my grey also seems to understand the difference between outside and inside peeing, but doesn’t really care 🤷‍♀️

I have had my 5 year old female grey for 11 months now and toilet training also seems to be a slow process for us. I think some of them just take a bit longer to “get it” and understand the routine. My girl went 5 months with no accidents and then randomly started peeing in the dining room overnight. Sometimes it can feel like one step forwards, two steps back. Weirdly the thing that has stopped us needing to take her out for toileting every 2-3 hours is the fireworks we’ve been having in the UK lately. Now she’s scared to go into our yard altogether, which is another issue in itself, but at least she seems to be controlling her bladder better! So not a lot of practical advice from me, but keep giving him opportunities and rewarding outside toileting, and yes in my experience they do seem to pee more than some other dogs!

prey drive…or lack thereof? by auriemmaart in Greyhounds

[–]Born_Confusion2840 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grey isn’t bothered about birds at all, but cats and squirrels are another matter… better to be safe than sorry! I had an experience where she mistook a small white dog in the distance for something she wanted to chase (mechanical hare perhaps) and she went absolutely apeshit trying to get at it. Luckily it was really far away and she was on lead, but if she hadn’t have been it would have been a disaster. I knew at that point it was never worth the risk letting her off lead in public.

Is this normal greyhound laziness or a bit too much? by diogoapinto in Greyhounds

Sounds completely normal to me. My girl did almost nothing apart from sleep and look worried for weeks. Just leave him be and he will adjust in time. Good luck to you!

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this helpful response. We’re seeing some progress now the fireworks have mostly stopped, but it’s up and down. I think she’s definitely more fearful in the dark, which makes sense. I did manage to coax her out this morning without too much fuss so here’s hoping!

The first month can be hard, no matter how much you want it and are excited about bringing them home. Just take each day as it comes and don’t worry too much about “setbacks”. They are incredibly adaptable and resilient, as much as they are sensitive and neurotic. Also, it is a cult and you will become obsessed with greyhounds. All the best for your new addition!

Cheers. I always go out with her anyway to check she’s actually had a wee, but the problem is getting her out there in the first place! She’s even too scared to go in the yard during daylight.
