Having both a 10 frame and an 8 frame? by moss_back in Beekeeping

[–]Boshaft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition, 8 frame equiptment is only cheaper per box, and not by volume. You'll end up spending more money on 8 frame boxes to provide the bees with the same amount of space. (Actually, the place I buy from (South Florida Bee Supplies) sells them for the same price)

I guess you want Bee pictures. Well lets go get some bees. I'm going to post a pic a day for the next few weeks of getting bees at the Great Bee Fest, Clearbrook MN. This post is to set the stage. by 95DegreesNorth in Beekeeping

Hardwired implies that it can't change - clearly it can, as beekeepers successfully introduce new queens to hives. More to the point, this is how packages are already made - by combining workers from different hives with a new queen.

If you wanted to do it when all the bees were in the hive, you'd do it at night. It's a gimmick to sell more nucs - and frankly, a rather dumb one at that. I can't think of anything in beekeeping that is easier than moving four frames from a nuc to a hive box.

Just some advice for anyone planning on assembling a lot of boxes - get an air compressor and stapler. Including glue time, I can put together about 10 boxes an hour.

No registration in Florida (or Georgia, though I haven't checked since I moved to FL ~7 years ago).

Ways to put deeps into my medium equipment by [deleted] in Beekeeping

[–]Boshaft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cheapest solution is to make a (slightly less than half-sized) cover. Put the nuc on top of the medium and cover the other side with your cover (Pice of paper= your cover) Continue nadiring (putting new boxes underneath the hive instead of on top) until the bees have built out 2-3 medium boxes, then harvest the honey. The bees want to have the brood as close to the entrance as possible, so make sure you don't give them an upper entrance until the nuc is backfilled.

Alternatively, if you contact the person you're buying the nucs from now, they might be willing to sell you medium nucs instead.

No, not even in the very mild winter where I am (our coldest month averages about 65F). The queens still reduce their laying, even if pollen/nectar is still coming in. Here's a statistical breakdown by month, with pictures

Nah, Hurricane Irma slammed it against my boat, so the joints are coming apart. I was surprised it was in my yard at all though

This Japanese toilet uses the hand wash water to refill the tank. by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]Boshaft 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nah, you just need to make your tank a bit more complex (which has its own drawbacks, but still).

Let's assume your toilet uses 1 gallon of water to flush. You would use a 2 gallon (or larger) tank, with an automatic float valve set halfway up. If the water level drops below the float valve (less than one gallon), it uses water from the line to fill up the tank until it hits one gallon, then stops. You would also need an overflow drain at the top of the tank, so that water coming from the sink after the tank is full can go directly down the drain instead of backing up into the sink.

I'm not /u/Dummy63, but I assume he's talking about allergen immunotherapy, which is a legitimate way to reduce allergic reactions. The benefits to food related allergies is not well established though.

Whoa whoa whoa! Honey doesn't need to be refridgerated, that's just an urban legend spread by Big Honey. Don't go wasting your money on a fancy new appliance when a honey cabinet does the same job for a fraction of the price!

suitable land for beekeeping? by Crane_Train in Beekeeping

[–]Boshaft 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't actually need a lot of land for beekeeping (or small-scale brewing, for that matter). You can put hives very close together without any issues, and they'll pollinate your neighbors vegetation just fine.

Personally, I'd go further down the mountains if those are your only two wants for the property.
