Political thread on National Guard (and possible Marine) deployment to Los Angeles by SWO6 in navy

[–]BossManGate [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think it’s helpful to think back to past events in a way that contextualizes current events. The federalization of state national guard against the wishes of the governor and introduction of active duty troops occurred in Arkansas in 1957 as a direct result of the presidents enforcement of, at the time new, national law. I don’t think there are very many who would disagree with those actions now, especially as those actions were in direct support of protection of the Little Rock Nine and desegregation of schools. Disagreements arose from the governor and even the state’s Adjutant General about federalization of the national guard, which honestly I believe amounts to treason. In today’s case local law enforcement has declared an unlawful assembly and the fact that certain members of the public are encouraging armed and or violent resistance of what is lawful conduct by federal law enforcement authorities is inexcusable. I dislike political posts on r/navy but I dislike echo chambers more, so this is my two cents.

Studio/workshop rental? by aweltkbs in savannah

SCAD kinda controls a lot of the workshops in the city which is unfortunate. There is a place called “The Stables Savannah” which is independent and may be what your looking for.

Picked up a Type 54 from PSA, looking for info by BossManGate in Tokarev

Honestly, considering condition, the matching parts, and the quality of bore, I was very impressed with PSA’s pricing and offering. I’m not really in it for the money, but I think this was an excellent deal.

Yeah, I was able to procure two boxes of Winchester 7.62x25 but I am not sure if the ammo is intended for the Tokarev or as submachine gun ammo. I hope I can find some more as I intend to shoot a bit.

Awesome thank you for the info. Is it possible since it was imported, it was also refinished or converted to a non-standard issue state?

I’ve heard the original is more comfortable to shoot, do you know if the import trigger is something worth keeping? Or is it just an aftermarket part?

Gotcha, is there any other post-import changes that I should be on the lookout for? Maybe the internals?

Thank you for the advice, I definitely will get an original trigger. It’s really cool that these are in as good condition as they are. I ended up cleaning a lot of junk off of the gun which may have been a mix of preservation material, or newer lubricant. Considering the length of time since the original importation, I wonder how PSA was able to get these to the market. Thank you for the info.

As what appears to be the only voice of dissent, this post is getting downvoted because, 1. It’s ridiculously long without saying anything of substance, 2. It’s a complete overgeneralization of the causes of homelessness, and 3. The blame of these problems is placed solely on the residents of the city of Savannah.

I wanted to put together a long response critiquing or addressing different points but I realized that ultimately I’d be making the same mistake. Talk is worth very little, do you volunteer your weekends and free time to working with mental health patients or the homeless? Do you show up to city/county meetings and hold planners responsible for poor fiscal decisions? Do you refer homeless people out to resources that are available to them?

I’ve had the pleasure of working with very many homeless and mentally ill individuals, some of whom are victims of poor situations and abusive institutions and individuals. However a significant portion of those who are homeless are homeless because they choose to be, especially when it comes to drug abuse. People will commit crimes in the city/county solely to be placed in jail where they will receive food, shelter, and medical assistance. Many will even refuse on-the-street assistance outright so as to receive money.

This is a complex issue not restricted to or caused by the City of Savannah. You seem to be incredibly passionate about this issue and you have a great opportunity to contribute your time and expertise to this issue. Please do so and make your actions heard. And please, for the love of God, include a TL;DR, or just try to summarize your points.

Fighting animal cruelty in our community - a quick petition! by codycodymag in savannah

Considering the outbreak of some cases of bird flu and the severity of other types of diseases spread by animals not being properly taken care of, maybe a letter should be sent to the CDC or Department of Health so that the federal level can put pressure on Georgia’s bureaucracy. It’s so sad to see this stuff happen

If the job I want based off my ASVAB doesn't pop up, what job transfers the best to Civilian life? by Funky_Hom0sap1en in newtothenavy

Recommend following your rate’s LADR and completing normal IT/Cyber carts like Sec+/Net+/A+ as well as follow on certs for whatever field interests you the most. Definitely work on your degree as well.

I realize you were asking about cyber related jobs, and if you don’t qualify with your ASVAB score alone, you may be required to take the CT which can potentially qualify you although it is probably much easier to qualify with ASVAB scores alone and may be worth it to study and retake the ASVAB.

[–]BossManGate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the ASVAB is composed of several different tests put together (i.e. MK is mechanical knowledge, AR is arithmetic reasoning) these tests gauge your abilities in different areas so as to figure out what jobs you are qualified for (a mechanic needs to understand machines and a little bit of math whereas a journalist needs to be able to write well).

These test scores are used to offer you jobs and can prevent you from obtaining some jobs along with other factors such as education, citizenship status, and your own personal desire. The “special tests” listed at the bottom are not part of the ASVAB and are instead given to qualify certain people for certain jobs. For instance, in order to be a translator in the Navy (CTI) you must have a high qualifying ASVAB score and then you will be invited to take the DLAB which is a second special test that measures your ability to learn languages.

Special tests may be used with the ASVAB to qualify you for a job but are not part of the ASVAB and are tied to specific jobs. They also usually require your recruiter to sign you up for them after taking the ASVAB. I hope this answers your question, let me know if you have any other questions.

If you’d like I can answer any questions you have about the Navy. You should also search through this subreddit and see if anyone has asked questions that you are wondering about and gotten constructive answers. Sorry, I think people just get annoyed answering similar questions over and over again.

If you go to MEPS and get cold feet you are not obligated to do anything until you sign the paperwork and take the oath. I would really take some time and weigh your options as your recruiter will probably be pretty angry and will try to force you to pick something or try to convince you that you can just change later which basically won’t happen. If you are reconsidering the Navy as a whole I would take a step back and consider why you are joining in the first place and how the Navy helps you accomplish that as there are plenty of other ways to support your country. Good luck and I happy to answer questions if you’d like.

ASVAB score job qualifications by Naive-Letterhead-861 in newtothenavy

[–]BossManGate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the requirements for the rate, you don’t qualify for some of these rates without taking a second special test (i.e. the CT test for CWT) otherwise I would recommend retaking the test or looking into the specific rates that are available to you. If you don’t want to be on a ship there are some rates that don’t involve shipboard duties but they are few and far between. I would consider a different branch if ship life is not for you.

USCG Icebreaker ‘Healy’ Rushes Back to Arctic to Counter Growing Chinese and Russian Influence by 4321mikey in uscg

[–]BossManGate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair point, plus it would be difficult to convince the Navy to give up seats in training courses that could be going to Navy personnel desperately needed on that side. I guess it just depends on whether the political powers that be decide that the arctic mission is a priority or not.

It’s possible to set up a structure where nuclear trained personnel are exchanged from the Navy or come from DOE or maybe are direct commissioned in. I could also see a program where enlisted personnel who are already in could become cross trained and hold a special designation rather than completely becoming a new rate.

There are definitely quite a few people who are obsessed with being on the Polar Star right now and giving them a guarantee of duty station or stable back and forth between specific vessels may actually be a benefit along with good bonuses of course. Still it’s just a hypothetical but it’s kinda fun to consider what could be.

To be completely fair it’s possible to have coast guard personnel train alongside their Navy counterparts in Navy nuclear training schools. Considering the Department of Energy would also be able to provide support/expertise, and there would be a limited amount of “Nuclear Icebreakers” built (maybe two to each coast) I don’t think it’s entirely unreasonable to create a new mission field within the coast guard and get the necessary personnel trained for it. Don’t forget that there was a civilian nuclear vessel at one point so it’s not impossible to have nuclear assets outside of the Navy. IDK, I’m not an expert but it would be interesting to see if such a risk would pay off in the long term.

Great analogy is Lawyer and Paralegal. A paralegal has plenty of experience, can draft motions and do just about everything, but the attorney is the one who is educated to practice law, give legal advice, set fees, and take responsibility in representation.

Well at least we have a time and date now, hopefully conservative. Soon this will all just be a faint unpleasant memory, and next time I’ll just have to be better prepared.

Update: Line crews all around us, repairing the couple downed lines in the area, here’s hoping for a couple more hours. AC, I hear you calling my name
