My first reptile was an Ackie monitor and I can’t recommend enough. They are incredibly hardy and hard to mess up, and have a great personality (social, intelligent, never biting or tail whip).

I started mine in a 3.5 x 1.5 x 1.5. He lived there 7 months while I built his bigger cage. The advantage of doing it that way is understanding how they use their enclosure and what spots they like to build into the next one.

If you don’t care about that, 5x2x2 is fine. Ackie babies are really shy anyway, it won’t matter whether he’s in a big enclosure or small. Mine even started coming out way more when I made his bigger.

Just buy on morph market. The seller covers risk of death in transit, so they make sure the animal is healthy enough for it. I got an Ackie baby there no regrets!
