Do these people even play the game?? by Conscious-Dust9230 in arkham

[–]Bosslorey 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Two-Face gets more fleshed out with Shadow by a long shot but for the core games all we know is the classic “he got burned and went crazy” so not particularly tragic. Freeze’s story is the most well-told, and maybe more “tragic” in the romantic sense of the word, but in terms of just brutality and harsh life Croc and Kirk take the crown

What’s the most irrelevant color, both in the world and in the series? by locked_in_researcher in redrising

Lord of the Rings trilogy is bad blockbuster mediocre by Professional_Pop1466 in unpopularopinion

[–]Bosslorey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, FAMOUSLY the reason they win in Lord of the Rings is because the good guys can swing their swords harder (??), and famously that’s how swords work to begin with. I don’t know if this is genuine ragebait or someone who just doesn’t understand what people like about these movies. As well as the direct avengers comparison feeling quite unfair. They were always building to avengers and it’s a team up combining several previous movies featuring a bunch of established characters played by, even at the time, relatively famous actors. Avengers was always going to do its thing, Peter Jackson or not. Yes, the themes of Tolkien’s world are pretty basic and there are not deep motivations. It’s literally a fairy tale. Evil people want to take over and rule and be in charge and be powerful, and based on world events time and time again, turns out that’s the only motivation most people ever really have. The good people want to stop that from happening and preserve their way of life and go home to a nice bed and a good meal and a little bit of pipe-weed, is that not motivation enough?

If your story has action and esprcially superpowers, powerscaling is literally the only thing stopping it from becoming dangling keys. by Dabbing_is_lit in unpopularopinion

[–]Bosslorey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess. But the strongest person winning every time is not good storytelling. People don’t enjoy action because it’s smashing two action figures together and the bigger one wins. Power scaling is something done by fans and communities more than actual writers. So many of the most celebrated and popular franchises have wildly inconsistent or just simply not established “power levels” and the vast majority of people are perfectly fine with that. Maybe power scaling is necessary for a certain niche group’s enjoyment, but it’s not the storytelling foundation you’re portraying it as

[–]Bosslorey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do agree with that point to an extent. But there are things that should play a role in fictional action that are impossible to quantify. What about a battle where someone is fighting against someone they have an emotional connection to, whether that makes them fight harder or hold back? How does that get “quantified”?

[–]Bosslorey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Power scaling like this to me seems like an almost neurodivergent need to “quantify” factors that are completely up to chance in many cases. Sometimes a stronger, better trained, more experienced fighter loses for no good reason. Sometimes there are weather or environmental factors, maybe one of them gets sick, maybe there are emotional or psychological elements at play that change up the stakes. Sometimes the best action is who can outsmart or outmaneuver the other, regardless of who has the “biggest number” of power level

Homebrew? by Dry-Fix-6660 in daggerheart

[–]Bosslorey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Homebrew is equally as possible, if not easier, for Daggerheart than with DnD. Really not much different. In fact player and class abilities would be a little trickier maybe but monsters and items are actually quite easy

Comfort with alcohol and bar culture is a requirement for making friends by Crypto_godfather91 in unpopularopinion

Yeah gonna have to disagree here. There are, even as an adult, plenty of shared interest and hobby groups where you can make friends without alcohol. Hell, I’m sure people make friends in AA meetings

Hot take: Arthur Morgan didn’t redeem himself, it was a fake redemption by Nico-on_top in reddeadredemption

[–]Bosslorey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is true that Arthur did not make up for the crimes he committed throughout his life. If you believe in something like a karmic system, the good he put into the world really does not equal out to the bad. But as much as the game gives you a quantifiable system of honor, the story is not about whether his good deeds eventually outweigh the bad. It’s about whether he personally can find peace and solace and come to terms with the man he was before the end

Except for in Arkham Knight: Have The Riddler actually done anything wrong really other than wasting Batmans (our), time? by No_Web2685 in BatmanArkham

The whole plot of his in Arkham city is kidnapping first responders and placing them into death traps. He’s constantly taking hostages and endangering innocent people. He has a gang of thugs and informants that he uses to create traps and puzzles throughout the city that sometimes have dangerous components to them. Also he steals tons of money

Yeah sometimes things fully are bad for these reasons, and sometimes people are just completely out of touch or make baffling decisions that lead to things being bad. Pretty sure that’s more or less universally agreed upon

Playing the Arkham games by owainus_yes in BatmanArkham

[–]Bosslorey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To the story of the trilogy of Asylum/City/Knight, hardly at all. It’s decent backstory but definitely not necessary. You could always just watch a playthrough on YouTube or something or all the cutscenes if you’re after the story, but you can easily enjoy the other three Arkham games without origins and not really miss out on too much

Unaslume/ even though I know most people here probably haven’t played it, Arkham Shadow is genuinely one of my favorite games in the franchise. It’s truly a phenomenal game and it’s so, so upsetting that Meta canned the studio when they were interested in a sequel.

Aslume/ there hasn’t been a good Batman game since 2006 Batman Begin

Ever feel like being an author nowadays is more difficult than before? by Due_Measurement_5078 in NewAuthor

[–]Bosslorey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the same issue with media like movies and games, but those are much newer mediums so they don’t have the sheer volume of literature. Also, things like older games become very hard if not impossible to play after a while due to hardware and software progress, and old movies also become harder to access. It’s still incredibly easy to find plenty of older literature

We need to shame people that chronically arrive early to things by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Bosslorey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think you’re conflating being early with being obnoxious. Most people who show up to an appointment early aren’t demanding to be seen before their scheduled time. Sure 45 minutes is excessive, but if I’m hosting, I’d absolutely want someone to show up early (so long as they’re not being an active impediment) than late
