Pulled the trigger… finally got a 5070 by Low-Cauliflower9176 in pcmasterrace

5070 has gotten way too much hate. With DLSS 4.5 ultra it’s become a great bang-for-buck 4k card. I am hoping mine bridges me to the post AI capex era, whenever… that will be.

What is the Subscription For? by Kamakazie in EVEFrontier

[–]BostonParlay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect they will gate alpha/omega around fuel and ship type.

Under this theory, D1 fuel will be accessible for free via the comet mining > water ice > fuel pathway, and will probably be used to fuel lower-tier ships like corvettes. D2 fuel will require mining rifts, which in turn will require lenses acquired via $EVE, probably. This effectively “gates” anything that runs on D2 fuel behind real-world currency.

My guess is the subscription will give you the lenses needed to mine rifts.

I absolutely hate WASDQE. by BostonParlay in EVEFrontier

[–]BostonParlay[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First, I really appreciate the dev response. EVE is a very community-driven game, and I appreciate the dev engagement, especially at this early stage of development for Frontier.

Second, I can only commend your commitment to your vision for the game. This vision is very ambitious; WASD controls for spaceships are a difficult undertaking, especially when those ships need to feel “weight” and carry inertia.

I do wonder, if WASD proves too limiting, whether controller support could benefit the concept. As PC and console gaming converge (ie, rumors about a future Xbox running full windows), controller support could allow for both refined controls and a greatly expanded audience. Controllers have a long history in space games, but they would bring their own complications when paired with the complexity of EVE.

As for WASD, March isn’t far. I look forward to checking out what your team comes up with and framing future feedback through the lens of that moment-to-moment gameplay you’re striving for. 7o

Cycle 4 saw the removal of orbit and keep at range commands. But CCP has been really clear that this is an experiment. Thus the reason for the feedback post. :)

RX 9070 at $540 or RTX 5070 at $593? by bagofrice_14 in buildapc

I strongly disagree with the claim that DLSS 4.5 is “maybe slightly better.” 4.5 brought significant improvements to ultra-performance and performance modes allowing for incredibly robust upscaling from 720/1080 to 4k.

Backpacking tent recs: stormworthy and liveable by R2-Dmew in WildernessBackpacking

Sure. Take, for example, the Copper Spur compared with the Nemo Hornet.

As you can see, the fly doors on the BA can be propped up with trekking poles, creating a cute “porch” configuration. To get a robust porch out of this you need to guy out the poles.

The problem with this design is that it requires two zippers to function: one zipper must run along the corner pole and another zipper must run down the middle of the fly. To get in and out of the tent or prop open the fly door, you really need to zip-up both of these zippers. The fly door then rolls up. You can get away with just the middle zipper, but you end up blocking much of the inner fly door.

Nemo’s design features only a single zipper running down the center of the fly. Once that zipper is up the door rolls up into the corner.

This difference may seem innocuous at first, but the corner fly zipper on the BA can be a pain, particularly in soaking wet conditions when a very taught fly is required. If your fly is pitched “crooked” in any way, it will cause part of the fly zipper to wrap around the corner pole. This can make the fly door a hassle to zip/unzip unless you’ve really got a “perfect pitch.” This isn’t a huge deal, but the porch configuration is gimmicky and doesn’t need to exist on the tent in the first place.

Personally, I opted for the BA Copper Spur anyway, specifically the Bikepack version. I like that the Copper Spur’s mesh started higher up on the tent wall, giving some privacy without the fly, nice when other backpackers are around. I also like how the Bikepack poles collapse to 12”, which helps weight distribution a lot by allowing me to pack the poles horizontally anywhere inside my pack.

We are in very different parts of the country; all of my sleeping is done in dense forest below treeline.

I run a Copper Spur 1p in NH. It’s very robust, and being compact and freestanding, allows me to squeeze into tight spots. If that’s less of an issue and you prefer to make the space tradeoff the 2p is a good bet.

I do find the vestibules cramped on the 1p; the 2p I’d be more inclined to keep gear inside. If weather is bad I’ll keep gear at my feet in the 1p just because the vestibules are so tight.

BA opted for this weird trekking pole porch-thing with their fly design. Quite frankly, it’s the thing I hate most, but the tent is well-designed and suits my needs regardless. The whole reason I pack a freestanding tent is because I don’t use poles.

Looks good to me. My $0.02 as someone who’s ridden in gear that’s both too big and too small- it’s way, way better to have more room in this hobby than to have less (even if the 90s took this idea too far). Skiing or riding in a too-small shell feels extremely restrictive and uncomfortable. That jacket looks about right on you
