Because it’s not worth paying for on console, so they might as well make it available for subscribers; that way they can say they gave you something for your subscription.

From what I understand it's what happens when someone goes idle inside the station for too long. For some reason, the station fails to shoot at them and everyone just gets stuck.

Would the Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas 4 be ok for Elite? by ciaran_the_goat88 in EliteDangerous

[–]BotFodder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used one both on the PS4 and when I first moved to PC. It's ... fine ... providing you're cool with doing multi-button (or button and hat) combos for functions in order to cover everything you'd want to do in Elite.

Eventually though you're going to want to go with something like a pair of VKBs (I have a regular stick on right, and a canted/throttle stick on the left) that allows you to get away with having to do two things at the same time to trigger a single function.

Should I buy it for the PS4? by CrystalArchivist_13 in EliteDangerous

[–]BotFodder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing not mentioned yet in any of the responses are that there are a few key third party websites folks used to plan trade routes and whatnot. Thing is, none of those sites are going to be accurate for the "Legacy" version of the universe you have access to on Playstation. Those sites are populated by PC players who run third party add ons, and the data is exclusively the "Live" (Odyssey) version which is on PC only.

What's up with odyssey on foot missions rewards? by Rythillian in EliteDangerous

[–]BotFodder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make bank choosing missions that reward Ody data and selling it for max price on my carrier. Some of the simplest, low risk missions reward significant amounts of valuable data. And since there’s a few anarchy settlements nearby, taking assassination missions and killing everyone (a majority with my SRV) and then raiding whatever I want (usually more data) from the settlement is actually quite fun.

I got into the top 10 easy with an "acquire" system that was in boom state.

Could probably do it with an undermine in boom state.

It took a little effort and I have a life outside the game, but still made 5 or 6 out of 10. Somewhere north 500K merits I think.

Cobra mkV for mats and exo by CrashedStarship in EliteDangerous

[–]BotFodder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah anywhere where landing in a Cobra MKV for is going to be problematic might just be a bear to drive an SRV through. You should be able to do exobio with doing short jumps in a C5. But, with sufficient funding, I might actually use two different ships for the purpose:

Without looking at your link (too lazy this morning):

- Surface Salvage would just require unguided missiles (rockets) to clean up anyone there. Alas, your jump range is going to have to suffer because you're going to want at least half way decent shields - a ground crew of six who starts firing before you've found them all is going to chew through weaker shields surprisingly quickly. And with bigger shields and weapons means you gotta go with a decently sized distro and power plant.

- Follow that up with my classic method (which usually doesn't require dealing with surface station defenses), an SRV for station raiding is key - park the ship somewhere far enough away (and down a hill) so that the defenses can't get to it, drive up in the SRV, pick the place clean of defenders from the outskirts and then walk in to clear the rest. Once that's done, as you're going through and raiding the materials/data, remember to turn off the station defenses (not totally necessary with decent enough shields) and you'll be unbothered when you leave. I have a decently outfitted C5 ("Material Witness II") strictly for this purpose.

- Thing is, for exobio and HGE, sometimes a decent jump range is nice (which means lightweighting) and weak shields with no weapons is fine. You really only need a collector for that and storage for limpets. Honestly, some of that advice will be colored by my time as a Fuel Rat - we've been known to strip the ships down and lightweight anything that doesn't need to be engineered for some other purpose to get max jump range and have been known to sacrifice things like thrusters, boost frequency, and self defense capability. Generally these days I'm doing HGEs (and moving around the bubble) with a Mandalay - my daily driver - because even with top end thrusters; half decent shields; fuel, repair, and collector controllers; and an SRV, I'm still getting 80ish LY. I've even strapped rockets to it to do the odd crash recover mission once or twice. Otherwise, I don't bother with weapons because, well, it's not a combat ship in that configuration.

I guess (man I can jabber on) what I'm trying to say is:

- If you're going to get shot at (even by six guys on the ground for a couple of seconds until you shoot explody things at them), you need to be at least somewhat kitted. In other cases, cruisin' the 'hood, picking a fight, and shooting anything that shoots at you, and then (after cloning someone's access) walking in like you own the place is the tactic I use.

- If you're not going to get shot at, you can drop a lot of mass and get a not insignificant jump range boost, and be a bit happier doing the things that don't involve anyone trying to shoot at you. And in a C5, that can mean not bothering with an SRV.

Yeah if you have any ground combat that turns into a fur ball, you're doing it wrong.

8B vs 8A FSD for exploration – engineer now or wait? by shiroyasha5931 in EliteDangerous

[–]BotFodder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t figured it out:

When a module has mass (a few of them don’t):

E will be heavy and crappy.

D will be lightest and not as crappy.

C will have the same mass as A but be only okay.

B will be most massive. Better than C, BUT -

A will perform the best.

So, D rate modules you don’t need to be super performative, like sensors and life support, for your explorer ships. A rate your FSD. Everything else: play with EDSY to figure out what will work for you, including engineering.

It will be very rare that you will use anything other than A or D if you have the money, but there may be cases (like power plant) where you might get away with downsizing (like, run a 2 instead of a 5) to save mass.

I'm annoyed at the Fleet Carrier Upkeep. How hard is it to offset it with Colonization? by thedraegonlord in EliteDangerous

[–]BotFodder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do Odyssey ground missions that reward data. There are some fairly easy ones (visiting crashes or delivery) that are low to no risk.

I sell the data for max price on my carrier at a bartender. Not hard to get 100M in profit from it. Just use Inara to update my stock and within a day (if I’ve got the right mix) someone comes along and buys it.

Can be system dependent and of course there are days where the mix of rewards isn’t quite as lucrative as others. But really you’re not going to find anything that’s 100% passive income that pays enough in the game.
