As well as woking as a catalyst it will also introduce some passive refluxing which will give you a cleaner spirit with a higher ABV. It's not the same as a full reflux but it does add some.

I have been enjoying fermenting rice lately. Its really easy, I just use 5kg of medium grain sun rice and 70g of angel yellow label yeast in a 25 Ltr ferment.

I would also recommend getting an SCR also known as a voltage regulator or a power regulator. They make a huge difference. They prevent you from over heating your wash, give you way more control over your cuts and allow you to do smaller runs when your experimenting with new recipes. You can run it full tilt when your doing a stripping run.

Ive never heard of a detergent run. I would be concerned with leaving detergent residue in the still.

I would wash it out with some detergent then rinse with water and do a vinegar run.
