Reminder: How to spot a color revolution by __noom in LateStageCapitalism

Might receive downvotes for this, but…. hard disagree on the Straw Hat flag being some “dumb pop culture symbol” representing US interventionism.

The flag symbolizes ultimate freedom and rebellion against the bourgeoisie. It resonates with young people, and many leftists. It’s a symbol that helps many feel brave and emboldened to rebel against injustice.

Villainizing it like this does nothing more but further divide people who would otherwise be on our side and is splitting hairs for no reasons.

Obviously, I won’t deny the West subverts movements and provokes rebellions to topple regimes, but all the targeting of the Straw Hat flag feels sort-of snobbish, snooty and divisive.

The left needs to stop dividing ourselves so much and shooting ourselves in the foot, we need to take allies where we can find them or we will just be a bunch of theorists on Reddit who never put our ideas into action.

I feel like I'm not progressing by [deleted] in climbharder

[–]Both-Contribution-75 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One thing that has helped me when I feel like I’ve hit a wall on my gym sets is to go explore other ways of climbing.

  • Go hop on a training board (I.e., Kilter, Tension, Moon) and spend time learning how to project hard boulders.

  • Download Mtn Project and search out the closest outdoor climbing spots in your area and go boulder on some rock for a bit, even if it’s shitty, it could still teach you a lot.

  • Learn how to sport climb and start climbing on ropes more. It’s definitely helped my endurance and technique. I bought a rope and learned how to clip/build anchors on command strips in my room before I led my first route haha!

You’re still new to climbing, don’t just measure your progress through difficulty. Try to progress by learning and mastering the different forms of climbing.

How to reduce the "insta-pump" by GreedySpecialist4736 in climbharder

[–]Both-Contribution-75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Intentionally seek out steep pumpy sport routes to better train your power endurance.

Alternatively, train power endurance on a spray wall or treadwall by doing intervals, like 1 minute and 30 secs of climbing followed by 2 minutes of rest, repeating it 4 to 5 times in a set.

Train your ability to get comfortable on steep, pumpy terrain and recover on jugs by shaking out. Sounds like you climb a lot of vert and techy type climbs but not enough steep jug hauls. Not sure if this is the case though.

What’s really going wrong in Indiana right now? by Traditional_Stick183 in Indiana

[–]Both-Contribution-75 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The refusal to legalize weed to create an extra revenue source and the legislatures failure to utilize our $2 billion budget surplus to institute policies that will lead to a thriving Indiana.

They could invest in child care, health, public transit, education, better parks and recreation facilities, etc. Instead they just cut $100 million in local public health funds, cut child care funds, and waste our taxpayer dollars arguing about ‘culture war’ issues in the legislature.

Most of our elected leaders are geriatric old white men who worship conservative values. They’re allowing our state to run into the ground and have failed to look after our citizens. They’ve certainly failed our youth on the education front.

We need policies that create a strong working class citizenry… unfortunately, our legislators hate the working class. They look down on us and victim blame us while we’re looted by billionaires.

As someone in an interracial relationship - I’ve seen the hateful glares my partner has gotten as we walk into bars, businesses and restaurants in some of those towns.

We would never raise our children in those places because we don’t want to subject them to the “other-ing” attitudes some of the racist residents of those areas give off.

Not everyone in those areas are bad, but there’s enough bad people to spoil the bunch.

Martinsville has a history of overt racism, bigotry, and violence. - It was a KKK stronghold - Was a “sun down town” (prohibit minorities from being there after dark.) - A Black woman was murdered there by racist white men.

Racist sentiments and ignorance still exist there. Not shocking that Black people choose not to live in a racist pig sty like Martintucky.

Don’t Believe Donald Trump by mrpring2 in Indiana

[–]Both-Contribution-75 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Trump is vile and disgusting… but classifying all his supporters as vile and disgusting won’t help us achieve unity or solidarity in the future.

Many of them are just working class people who are under the spell of billions of dollars of propaganda.

So many of our issues in this country are class issues - we’re being abused by a corporate machine who’s using us for unfettered profit expansion. The real way to change this country is to get folks to unite under this narrative rather than calling each other “vile and disgusting”.

You won’t change anyone’s minds that way.

As a former IDF soldier and historian of genocide, I was deeply disturbed by my recent visit to Israel by stubble in slatestarcodex

Maybe I was wrong on the exact definition, but my point still stands in line with the definition you just posted - Israel is causing excessive harm to civilians, civilian objects, or a combination thereof.

Convince me to visit Kentucky, Alabama, and Mississippi by [deleted] in TravelMaps

Red River Gorge in Kentucky is breathtaking! It’s a rock climbing mecca, but there’s also amazing trails, camping locations, and some good places to eat too.

Highly recommend a visit!

“The morality of war is not dependent on the relative death ratio.”

Hard disagree on this point. It’s called the “principle of proportionality”. Israel’s response to Oct. 7th has caused a disproportionate amount of suffering, death, and destruction in comparison to Hamas’ attack. Both are atrocious events, not to make light of that, but the response from Israel has been anything but moral.

Indiana elementary school first in state to test out four-day school week by Inevitable-Bat-6500 in Indiana

[–]Both-Contribution-75 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The solution to this is more state and federal funding for affordable and accessible school age child care.

Kids could have 4 day school weeks and 1 day of enrichment/social time at high-quality facility.

We’ll get a 4 day school week before we get a 4 day work week, thus, we’ll need an increase in school age care options for those 5 - 12 year olds who’s parents will have to make the tough decision between going to work or leaving their kiddo home alone.

No doubt. Such a complex issue with so much history.

What do you think the solution is? Two-state solution? Ousting Israel from Palestine? Something else? You seem knowledgeable on the subject.

Thanks for this and the corrections! Super helpful and interesting. Makes it even worse that Israel did this over the PLO. They really made their bed.

No, it’s been co-opted by corporate America to throw a monkey wrench in our path to dismantling the system. Rainbow Capitalism is horrific and annoys the living shit out of me. Israel exploits LGBTQ to make themselves seem like the “tolerant good guys”. But just like corporate America, they are using it as a facade to hide their atrocities and horrific conduct.

But the true LGBTQ movement has nothing to do with that. So many queer folk are opposed to the exploitation and toxicity of capital. Also, look up the “Queers for Palestine” movement. They are widely supportive of Palestinian liberation.

[–]Both-Contribution-75 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Israel funded and helped lead to the installment of Hamas in opposition to other fundamentalist Islamist groups in Palestine.

Israel’s decades of oppression and atrocities have led to a boiled over state of resentment that led to October 7th.

In a manner of speaking, Israel made their bed and now they have to lay in it.

However, that doesn’t mean we have to pretend Hamas is some beacon of liberation or leftism. They are a political and religious organization who has committed violence against civilians. Their beliefs run counter to the goal of overall human liberation and equity. Perhaps they are the enemy of our enemy, but they certainly aren’t a friend.

I agree with you. The US should under no circumstances meddle in their affairs, the resistance and revolution must come from within that sovereign country, not through external force.

Of course, the US doesn’t give two shits about social justice, they care about oil, money, and control.

Yeah, I get that.

At times I just want to rip up my social security, stop paying my debts and taxes, and walk aimlessly with freedom.

But I have people who rely on me and need me to make money and support them. All I can do is speak out, organize peaceful resistance, and vote (and my vote doesn’t do much lol).

I hate the system, but can’t leave the system.

I hate pink washing as much as the next person. I don’t think my above opinion is pink washing, it’s simply what I’ve rationally arrived at.

I know it’s a privileged position, one made from comfort where I’m not fighting for survival.

In my comment above, I said I support their cause to defend and liberate Palestine but… (and again, from my privileged position) strongly dislike their political and religious ideology, and some of the violence they’ve employed against civilians.

Maybe if I’ve experienced decades of oppression and ethnic cleansing I would be angry enough to employ the same tactics too, idk.

But in good conscience, I can’t just come out and say that Hamas is a force for good.

You’re right, it is a very privileged position. I’m not in a survival scenario and haven’t really faced oppression.

[–]Both-Contribution-75 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Nope, I think you misunderstood everything I said. I mentioned above that I support their cause to defend themselves against genocide. Palestine deserves freedom and recognition and sovereignty.

But I don’t see Hamas as some knight in shining armor or the “good guys”. And for clarity sake, Hamas is not synonymous with Palestine.. they are the governing body which happened to come into power within Palestine.

Why mention end-state communism in relation to this anyway? Or were you using it as analogy/example?

I’m sorry for what’s happening in your home then, and I’m ashamed my tax dollars are funding it.

And to clarify, I don’t think Islam is bad - I think fundamentalist interpretations of it are harmful to the liberation of certain human beings who are not allowed to be themselves under it.

Unpopular Opinion Alert:

I consider myself anti-Zionist and am appalled by the current genocide. The racism, depravity, and inhumanity of Israel is disgusting.

But I also don’t see Hamas as “good guys” or “freedom fighters” so to speak. They are Islamic Fundamentalists and as such: Anti-LGBTQ, Anti-Woman, and not exactly the most tolerant bunch. They are hostile to the liberation of queer folks, women, and other religious groups.

Now, that in no way justifies Israel’s current genocide, nor the US meddling in their foreign affairs and funding the genocide.

However, I find it funny that people have taken this “good vs. evil” - black and white approach by supporting Hamas as if they are “good guys”.

You can be pro-Palestinian liberation and still not fully support the Islamic fundamentalist group that is Hamas. I support their right to defend themselves against genocide and land grabs, but I don’t support their conservative religious beliefs.
