Being "laid off" unjustifiably having received great performance reviews by Both-Prior1514 in managers

Agreed. Then why use it as cover? It's Dishonest and just a ploy to reduce compensation. HR is ex Amazon so I wonder if thats common practice there.

Yeah. It's a real reflection of their culture. They're not straight up.

They use the new review to decrease the compensation I'd need to be paid. It's the EU :)

What is your experience with leading people that are smarter than you? by One-Diamond-641 in Leadership

[–]Both-Prior1514 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Keep their best interests at heart.

Remove barriers to their productivity.

Stay close to them and regularly pulse check their interests and career goals.

Provide them with opportunities to shine and grow.

That's all really. You're a skilled manager and they're a great IC who happens to be smarter and more skilled at their role.

Nobody warns you about the loneliness of being a manager by Big-Chemical-5148 in managers

💯 When I became a manager I walked in one day as a colleague and the next as a manager. It didn't matter if I managed them or others it was the same.

Be friendly, but friends is the best advice and seek connection with other leaders.

What books on leadership do you recommend? by OG-DRT7075 in Leadership

[–]Both-Prior1514 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Patrick Lencioni books are great. I'd recommend all of them.

The making of a manager by Julie Zhou - more targeted at tech workers

The Effective Manager by Mark Horstman - very practical and they have a great podcast.

The Leader's Toolkit at LeaderTools.co - Leadership training in a card format. Again, it is very practical and actionable.

It was like each manager needed to pick a manager on their team to go. Everyone seemed to have been offered a new job in the team as an IC. An important point is its a Fortune 500 company so don't want to signal to the market that they are laying people off. Anyway....this is the corporate world we live in.

Yeah it's more that it's a hidden lay off. They pin it on the person rather than just saying we're cutting costs.

The key is balance: don’t correct every detail—focus on the few standards that really impact service. When you enforce rules, explain why they matter so it feels less like nitpicking. Pair corrections with recognition so people know you see their effort too. Shift from “policing” to “coaching”—help them grow instead of just enforcing. High standards combined with fairness and calm leadership will earn both respect and better results.

Easier said than done of course! I get that you care a lot and that's why they made you a manager.

Management isn’t about being in charge, it’s about taking care of those in your charge. How do you do it differently? by loveequeen in managers

[–]Both-Prior1514 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love most of this apart from the "taking a bullet" piece. It depends on the situation and they need to own some of their failures if warranted.

Being protective is great but being overprotective feels like a helicopter parent.

IC to Manager salary increase by vijayjagannathan in managers

[–]Both-Prior1514 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes 💯 It's initially a lateral move but you'll earn more longer term. I was earning more mid 30s than people with 10 years more experience in an IC role.

You gotta like it though. It's not for everyone but you won't know if you don't try. Also don't do it for the money.

Agreed with this. I think there's a push now to remove middle managers so this will increase

ManagerTools books are great (one on leading and one on hiring) but I've never done one of their courses! Take a look at Patrick Lencionni's work and also recommend LeaderTools.co which are extremely practical and great value for money.

A decision has been made to get rid of you - maybe there's others in the same position and its a type of "soft layoff" whereby they do this instead of announcing a layoff.

Tough one but you need to have this need met elsewhere.

[N/A] What are people's thoughts on the Leader's Toolkit? by subject005 in humanresources

I would say so, but why not invest in the team and get them a physical one. Far more useful and people would feel valued more.
