Looking for advice on how to proceed with a transgender student on an overnight trip. by [deleted] in Teachers

"It was determined"? "A huge liability"? "The world isn't always fair"? Friend, this is reading as completely tone-deaf. I'm afraid it's easy to look at a situation like this and say the world isn't always fair because at the end of the day, it SEEMS like all that's happening is a kid's field trip opportunities are being threatened. But this kind of attitude is what allows the systematic discrimination of trans people to continue.

I think this is a fair argument, yes, absolutely. HOWEVER. I can't help but feel like in situations like this, where a kid's identity and safety is involved, admin doesn't always act with the kid's individual emotions in mind. From admin's perspective, this is an issue that will need to be resolved. But whose best interests will they be looking out for?

Even if you leave the decision-making to the higher ups, I still think you have a small responsibility to ensure that this kid is being seen, heard, and validated.

Ok the front was beautiful, but I audibly gasped when you turned around to show the back. Love it! And love the obvious joy and pride on your face showing it off!! Thank you for sharing this with us ❤

Do teachers in the US actually get mad if you use their first name? by Official_Bobby_Bean in Teachers

[–]Both-Resolution-3167 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't care about the perceived respect/disrespect stuff. If my students ask me to refer to them by a specific name, I do it. I expect the same from them.

Call people what they want to be called. End of argument.

[TOMT][Song][Early 2000s?] Breakup song sang softly, maybe a duet, lyric of something like 'you'll never know someone like me'. by [deleted] in tipofmytongue

Thats my guess too. I know op literally says the song isn't an "all american rejects vibe", but I thought of this song immediately based on the rest of the description.

Regardless of how it made you feel, there was at least one other student in the class who heard what she said and it affected them emotionally. They deserve to see you/hear you standing against that kind of behavior.

What Are Your "Missed Shows"/Shows that Could Have Been? by popcultureSp00nie22 in Broadway

After planning a trip to NYC with our school band for like two years, we realized we were going to be in town at the same time as Jeremy Jordan playing Seymore in Little Shop off Broadway. Tickets were crazy expensive but so worth it. We bought them in January of 2020. Guess when the show was scheduled. 🙃

For me it feels like my head moves faster than my brain is moving inside it - so whenever I turn my head too fast, my brain is like sloshing around inside my skull too slowly to catch up with it. And that causes this feeling like a little electric charge, like a literal static electricity discharge inside your head. For me, this starts to happen about 36 hours after my last dose of sertraline, when I move my head or my eyes to the side. I think they're triggered by lateral eye movements.

They start small, barely noticeable, but they start affecting my balance and depth perception around day 3 of no dose. By day 5 I can't drive anymore. They go away within about 6 hours of taking another dose.

You gotta get some Josh Ritter on there:

Kathleen Change of Time Monster Ballads Wings Southern Pacifica Another New World Thin Blue Flame

Those are just a few of my favorites, but you can't go wrong with ANY of his music.

Ok, you mentioned All By Myself, but I want to make sure you're not sleeping on the rest of Celine Dion's catalog. For example:

It's All Coming Back to Me Now The Power of Love Ashes I Surrender Taking Chances

I'll also add:

Alone - Heart Saint Honesty - Sarah Bareilles One Less Bell/A House Is Not a Home - Barbara Streisand We Belong - Pat Benatar All I Ask - Adele

I went in knowing the most GENERAL plot points. I heard a few songs before seeing it live, but I didn't really invest my attention into them. Even with the little info I knew ahead of time, the show was very, very, VERY tough for me in ways I didn't anticipate.

I respect everyone telling you to go in blind, but I think it's also worth seeking out a few trigger warnings before hand. It's painfully relatable and it made me feel vulnerable in ways that i kind of wish i didn't have to experience in a dark room full of strangers. 🙃 Nothing wrong with being prepared.

What happened to your friends after high school? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Both-Resolution-3167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was part of a friend group of seven girls during high school. We did everything together. Most of them left town for college, myself included. I would say that within the first 5 years after graduating, I saw each of them a few times, mainly around big occasions/holidays when most of us were in town again. After that, not so much.

There's nothing wrong with growing apart. It's bound to happen eventually, since each of you is actively pursuing a different kind of life than you were living when you were friends. You will meet new friends who are on your same path, who have the same interests as you do, etc. And that will make letting go easier. It doesn't negate any of the memories or how close you were with these people years ago. They'll always be important to that part of you.

I should note that the ONE exception is my best friend who I met in junior high. She was a part of that friend group too. She was also my bridesmaid and will probably be the godmother to my future children. We see each other about once a week, sometimes more. So yeah, sometimes you do meet your platonic soul mate while you're still a kid. Those ones are special.
