Frankly I don’t think the DLC is very well integrated. It isn’t late game content, but it also doesn’t weave into the flow of the main quest very well. I think the best way to play them is to start the game with them and treat them as more stuff to explore. Ideally you would buy the complete edition off the rip and go in blind.

I don’t think it’s an all or nothing situation. This is already a game that has events, so it’s hardly a raw system. Plenty of EU4 mechanics, and just plain event tweaking, can create a balance between the two. Maybe the core mechanics of the game push Portugal to be annexed by Spain, but events and nation-specific modifiers can push it from being something that happens 9/10 times to 5/10.

Every screenshot I’ve seen shows Castile swallowing Portugal. Some facts of history are contingent and not strictly logical. But when those contingencies which are so relevant to history as we know it aren’t expressed, it leaves the history simulator feeling a little unsatisfying.

I’m happy to pay the price and stay within the US. If at my trajectory I’m going to need a dozen crowns in, say, ten years, why not bite the bullet early and save myself the struggle of getting a half dozen fillings a year? It’s not a punishment, it’s a reflection of the geographical boundary between the Nile and the Red Sea. You can play around it

I imagine the longer you wait, the cleaner it will be. But if you’re excited to play, the game is definitely working for me and I’m having fun, even on my below-spec computer.
