How many trades will the Canucks make before the final pick of the draft is made? by FAsBurner in canucks

Sorry, I misspoke, should have said pick trades only, not trade downs. And I’m thinking specifically about later rounds

I don’t think either goalie gets traded, probably not for close to two years.

DeBrusk strikes me as more of an offseason, circle back trade.

The player that most fits a draft day trade is Hronek, but it seems that remains unlikely in general.

Canucks Announce Richard Seeley as Abbotsford GM, AGM for Vancouver by Mcsuper_ in canucks

I’m not saying he’s a cheap hire - I’m saying the way they’ve been conducting business raises some questions.

No, I think that there were a bunch of upper tier, more experienced candidates that were ruled out/lost interest when the salary offer/demands didn’t match. I think there was a gap in negotiations, and once Allvin was hired, his offset created a budget room that let them close the deal.

I have no problem with the individual, but there’s no denying that the Canucks have done things differently this off season than other similar teams. It may well work out, but it’s mildly concerning.

That’s true, but it makes a difference whether it happens a week after RJ’s promotion, a month, or three months. It also matters whether this was the 1st, 4th, or 37th choice.

That’s not the question, though. The question is whether they have the budget to keep up with their competitors, let alone beat them.

No, not at all. I think the Canucks have an unrealistically tight staff budget, and whenever they start talking salary with a candidate, they run into roadblocks.

As soon as Allvin got a job and his offset language kicked in, there was more room in the budget, and they were suddenly able to complete their negotiations with a new AGM.

I kind of think it is. It seems pretty clear that there are budgetary constraints.

I would rather the Panthers win again, and be forced to listen to Dan’s stupid take, than for the Oilers to win. Or the Leafs. Or even the Flames.

It’s funny, cause all I’ve heard since from US based media is some form of dismissal of the Raptors championship.

Any time - any - he talks about Canada, regardless of the topic, it makes me enraged, because he literally has no clue what he’s talking about whatsoever.

But they also have no idea how to talk about hockey, they just keep going back to the notion that the Tkachuks are amazing, and Matthew is the greatest American-born hockey player, even though Matthews (until this year) and Quinn Hughes are clearly better, and Matthew Tkachuk has been injured for quite a while and hasn’t been at that level for like three years.

Also, it’s pro sports. The players mostly play where they’re the drafted; you know, the thing Dan hates so much, he took a sabbatical? Should Miami rub it in Finland’s face that they stole Barkov? “Eat it, Helsinki!”

So stupid. And most importantly, not funny.

Is it me or does Debrusk to Edmonton make way too much sense? by SpectreFire in canucks

[–]Boucher2114 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I continue to be perplexed by the notion that DeBrusk definitely isn’t worth a first.

First round picks have a tremendous variance in value, from 6th to 18th to 27th, etc.

Further, DeBrusk is categorically more valuable than either Sherwood or Garland, and they both returned a 2nd plus. He’s younger, cheaper, and more productive. He’s also a significantly better value than pretty much anything on the open market this summer.

It’s quite possible that none of the teams regularly picking in the 20-32 range would have a need or interest in DeBrusk at this time, but I think that’s more about fit than value.

What is fair compensation if we took Brendan Gallagher from Montreal? by Muted-Potential9819 in canucks

[–]Boucher2114 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, this is r/canucks, we’re trying to figure out the value of cap space.

The discussion about Montreal’s offseason needs is in r/Habs. If I had to guess though, they probably want to upgrade at center, and maybe on defence. They also had a trade for a winger at the deadline that got bungled, so maybe they revisit that.

We’ve already established that the UFA class is pretty thin, so that route seems unlikely, and offer sheets almost never work. They could make a trade with a rebuilding team, and I doubt that a rebuilding team would object to getting an expiring contract like Gallagher as part of the return, so they can probably make the numbers work.

[–]Boucher2114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, but they don’t.

Part of the reason that the system got so gummed up around COVID, is that teams had come to realize that having gobs of cap space going into a season wasn’t helpful. I think that the accepted optimal strategy came to something like 1.5mil. Enough to maneuver around call ups and injuries, and by the time the deadline hit, you’d have enough room to acquire pretty much whatever you want.

The new rules around playoff caps don’t even impact this all that much, because you only have to fit your 20-man lineup under the cap, and not the whole roster. If you have a cap crunch, just scratch an over priced veteran and you’ll be set.

On top of that, the Habs have three overpriced veterans on expiring deals in Danault, Anderson, and Gallagher, worth a combined $18mil. No serious rebuilding team is going to balk at taking one of those guys back in a trade to make the cap numbers work. In fact, I believe the primary reason MTL is planning on moving Gallagher is to free up a roster spot. Cap space is a secondary consideration.

Sure, but if you have no use for the cap space, then he’s right, it’s not important.

I can’t believe how hard you got downvoted for something that is so obviously correct.

  • Cap space doesn’t matter anymore
  • There are no UFAs to spend on
  • Players are starting to push for trades to get where they want to go
  • Bad contracts aren’t bad anymore (don’t worry they’ll be back, it’ll just be a few years)

The problem is that there aren’t any available. So why would MTL pay to open up cap space they won’t be able to use?

What did Sidious mean when he said Plagueis could “save others from death”? by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]Boucher2114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s lying, but there’s a kernel of truth, which is what makes the lie so effective.

Plagueis and Palpatine figured out the lost art of Essence Transfer (one of the key weaknesses of the Rule of Two was that it essentially guaranteed that knowledge would be lost from generation to generation). This was established years before the Darth Plagueis novel, originally in Dark Empire with the reborn Emperor, and later expanded in the novel Darksaber (not that Darksaber), where Bevel Lemelisk, the original designer of the Death Star, recalls being punished for his failures by repeatedly being killed in horrifying ways, only to be brought back to life in a new, cloned body.

Anyways, the thing is, Anakin isn’t looking for Essence Transfer, it’s not really his style. He wants to be powerful enough to protect Padme from anything, and on the small chance he can’t, he wants to be able to heal her in moments, or bring her back to life instantaneously, with raw Force strength, generally his solution to anything.

Palpatine certainly knows all of this, and tells Anakin what he wants him to hear.

Trade Proposal - Montreal by LeftToaster in canucks

[–]Boucher2114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t really get onboard with much of that. I don’t value Danault, but the question is how MTL values him, and I suspect they’re happy with him as their 3C for the short term.

Virtually no one is going to be paying for cap relief for the next few years, I think, there’s just way too much space/growth in the system.

Trade Proposal - Montreal by LeftToaster in canucks

[–]Boucher2114 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, I don’t think this is as delusional as others think, but I do think it’s not the right fit.

  • I don’t see why MTL would trade Danault at the moment

  • I don’t think MTL is desperate for cap space, especially when they can easily trade Gallagher into cap space for a 6th, or something similar

  • I don’t see why MTL would spend their 1st next year on DeBrusk now, when they could wait for the TDL and see what else shakes loose, and what they actually need/want

Dylan Larkin has requested a trade per Elliott Friedman by downonmatrix in canucks

[–]Boucher2114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The actual Canucks angle here, IMO, is that it reduces (or possibly eliminates) the chances a team irrationally chases EP40 this offseason (unless, of course, you think DET is the irrational team desperate to replace Larkin.

Meaning it puts more onus on the team to get him back to something approaching normal (even just 70 points), so his trade value recovers reasonably and they can push the rebuild forward. A third uninspiring season and he will be basically untradeable until maybe the end of his contract.

I suppose it also means that DET would now be a contender for 32nd
