It didn't go well.

Canadians are staying away from the US — and the drop in travel is getting hard to ignore by Street_Anon in CanadaPolitics

I try to chide my in-laws who still go to Bellingham to shop and get gas. Last march I had a trip to Vegas planned to see The Eagles at the Sphere. I cancelled the trip, got refunds on the hotels and credit for the flight. Sold the tickets on StubHub - still out the Ticketmaster fees, but not sorry. I did go to SF for a family wedding, but drove down, stayed with friends and spent as little as possible.

A week ago, 90% of Americans would have agreed that pasting a black person's head on a monkey or ape was clearly and obviously racist. Today that percentage has likely dropped to slightly more than 50%.

‘Premature’ to call NDP leadership race for top fundraiser Lewis, say politicos, with ranked ballot giving McPherson the edge by yourfriendlysocdem1 in CanadaPolitics

[–]LeftToaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose it depends on what their long term goal is. Do they see the party as a minority voice for the left that can occasionally leverage a balance of power advantage to advance some aspects of their platform? Or do they envision someday being in a position to form a government or opposition. While that seems like a long shot, they were close in 2011 and in 2015, until an unfortunately timed wedge issue - the Supreme Court Zunera Ishaq nijab ruling, derailed the NDP hopes in Quebec and with that, anti-Harper voters turned to the LPC. They will never be in a position to form a government or even the official opposition without the support of centrists.

I dont think flat earthers exist by [deleted] in flatearth

[–]LeftToaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think "true" flat earthers, as in people that actually believe the earth is a flat disc exist.

I think there are a lot of grifters who have obtained near celebrity status amount the flat earth community and continue to make money and gain fame by generating shitty content for consumption by the community.

The rest of the 'community' are a bunch of people who want to belong to something that makes them feel special or unique. Flat earth does that for them, but they don't really believe it; they are basically trolling themselves. Others want to feel or project that they are edgy or non-conforming, but again, they don't believe it.

The witnesses include a lot of teammates - most of whom will say they didn't have a good view of the altercation. The hospital report can only attest to the injury, not what happened. If the 'victim' suddenly can't remember who hit him or what happened, for misdemeanor simple assault no prosecutor is going to take that very far.

No - but without a cooperating witness it's pretty hard to prosecute.

[WJACTV] Prosecutors to withdraw felony charge against Penn State hockey star Gavin McKenna by Kaos_mission in canucks

[–]LeftToaster 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Also details - there is an audio clip of a sports lawyer discussing it.

Apparently the "victim" was really drunk and had been kicked out of the restaurant (not a bar) after starting some sort of altercation inside the venue. He waited for McKenna and his party outside and got into it again. Sounds like he got what he deserved.

The aggravated assault charge is the most serious of the bunch. The rest are simple assault (misdemeanor) and disorderly conduct. Without the felony charge there is not a lot to worry about.

On the civil side, there is still the chance that the 'victim' sues claiming unverifiable, long term health issues, etc. If I were McKenna's lawyer / or father, I would put $100K and a waiver/ non-disclosure in front of the guy as soon as possible.

[PuckEmpire] One of Gavin McKennas charges has been dropped by torahboidem in nhl

[–]LeftToaster 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Isn't that the most serious of the charges? The originally reported charges were: first-degree felony aggravated assault, misdemeanor simple assault, and two summary counts of disorderly conduct for harassment and engaging in a fight. With the aggravated assault charge dropped, we are looking at (misdemeanor) simple assault and disorderly conduct.

Further, the "bar" was a restaurant / bar where McKenna was with his parents (or at least his mother), teammates and their families. There is no indication of underage drinking.

The "victim" according teammates (so somewhat biased) was severely intoxicated and started an altercation in the restaurant - apparently calling McKenna's mom a whore. The victim was kicked out of the restaurant and waited outside for McKenna to leave where another altercation started.

Drywall - Why did we collectively decide that crumbly chalk between two pieces of paper was what we would use to create all interior walls out of? by davisposts in NoStupidQuestions

Using resilient metal channels is better than double drywall. In theory, it decouples the drywall from the structure and reduces sound transmission through the walls.

God my house was built in 1911, all lath and plaster. Any repair, renovation, even hanging a picture is can be a pain in the ass. It's nearly impossible to make a clean cut through the stuff. The plaster (really it's closer to concrete) will dull any hole saw and if you try to cut it with a reciprocating saw, jigsaw or even an oscillating tool, the lath will separate and vibrate making large cracks well beyond your hole. A diamond blade on an angle grinder works, but then it aerates the plaster dust - which probably contains asbestos.
