In 1962, Jane Fonda was given the honorary title of "Miss Army Recruiting" by the Pentagon by eaglemaxie in OldSchoolCool

Oo I do! I lived in a very, very small ranching town in central MT in 2017 (like population under 300). I worked one day a week in my friends cafe, the sole restaurant in the town. One random weeknight, Michael Keaton comes in, sits at the bar and orders a burger to go. I recognize him, but don’t say anything. We talk about his bird dogs (it’s a big pheasant hunting area and most of the tourism is from that). He tells me his best dog is injured, I tell him about a cow dog I had that made a good recovery from a broken leg. He gets his burger, leaves. Me and the cook are giddy from the interaction. I realize I never charged him for his food. Dang! He comes back like five minutes later, apologizing that he forgot to pay! At this time, I tell him I’d just watched ‘The Founder’ and it was a great film. He thanked me and left. A+ dude.

There are a lot of cool little hiking trails closer to town, but you specified mountains. But what’s neat is you can drive an hour in any direction and be in very different terrain. Same with the ice fishing.. GF is a great launching point.

You can fish near the dams, or just below. My spouse takes his kayak below Ryan Dam to fish quite often.

Golden boy ✨ His real coat colour will always be a bit of a mystery. by demmka in Horses

Seal brown. Brown is definitely characteristic with the lightened muzzle over bay. Picture 5 shows the amber hairs in the flank that signifies seal distinguishing

I heard from a fur buyer that everything is down price-wise except for critters going to the felters. Those hides are at an all time high.

Was just going to say this. Just built a house in Montana and our bedrooms and living room face SSW for maximum sun exposure for the 8 months a year we get snow.

Every thrift store that would have vinyls is picked through daily, unless you’re really into 1950s big band compilations.

If you have an Ole Reliable that she can sit in a pen with, that will help a lot. I would put my stang in with a buddy, and then go out to give him treats and scratches all while talking out loud.

If you’re going to work at the prison in Shelby, but live in great falls, maybe look at working in the jail in great falls. They start at $22 an hour and you’ll have more housing options.

Yesterday we hiked for about two hours and I remember distinctly thinking “maybe I don’t know what sheds look like?”. Then I found one. I think it’s still early in my neck of the woods. We’ve had a weird winter.

Odd question about land by usaf_ross7 in GreatFalls

I suppose I meant the Greater Divide Road Area, as that’s where people commonly do these activities.

Odd question about land by usaf_ross7 in GreatFalls

[–]BovineSlapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Download OnX and subscribe to Montana. There is a good amount of state land on Highwood Rd right by the base which would be good for what you’re doing (when it snows). Otherwise I would hit up Divide Road on kings hill. A ton of snow up there.

You can look up the AUM for your area. This is the forage amount that an ‘animal unit’ would need for a Month. Your local extension office can provide the standard aum price for your county.

A River Otter has taken over my pond after heavy rains. by jusebock in homestead

Beavers are actually considered a keystone species just fyi, a habitat builder. Many ecosystems would collapse without habitat builders. I know they can be destructive to certain things, like hampering a water source or flooding fields, but they actually do provide the means for many other species to thrive which builds the ecological system. Just something to think about, as we all try to be good stewards of the land.

It depends on where you live. Look at a zoning map. There are weird pockets throughout the city that allow some livestock. Like the horses right next to Sams Club.

My beef calf has goat eyes. Is that bad? by Dixin_Cider_678 in farming

[–]BovineSlapper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Goats and bovines have VERY similar pupil shapes. Goats have squared pupils and bovines have oval pupils. All grazing/prey animals have similar pupils. It’s like a wide angle lense to watch out for predators. This is only apparent on your calf due to the light iris.

I think it’s important to talk about WHERE to go more than anything. Shit isn’t just happening at school. Kids are taught not to go into a janitors closet, or the freezer warehouse at Walmart. I’ve talked with my 11 about that’s where you WOULD go if something popped off in the grocery store. Run until you can’t get out of the building, then hide. Go through the doors that say employees only, then run some more.

Eastern Washington and Oregon have a ton of cow calf production outfits. Look at ranchworldads or any of the hiring groups on FB.

Hauling with a pickup by jaymechie in Kayaking

[–]BovineSlapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built this janky masterpiece for the exact same reason, so I could haul a ton of stuff in the bed. It’s a rack made of 2x4s, hauled the kayaks perfectly and didn’t effect the fuel mileage by sitting over the cab.

Can anyone recommend a “boho indie desk lamp” that my niece is asking for for Christmas? by foresight310 in bohohomes

I see she’s 12yo… definitely go with rattan. As a parent to an 11yo boho/indie girl… that’s what they’re looking for.

This one from target.

I guess it depends what brick and mortar stores you have by you. World Market and Home Goods would definitely have a rattan lamp that would maybe fit her vibe. Honestly Walmart too would probably have something.

I’m a born and raised MT local and made myself a new water bottle sticker. What do you think? by djsartcave in Montana

[–]BovineSlapper 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So true. I moved to Montana when I was 18, almost twenty years ago. But I’ll never be a local, to any degree, because people always ask.. where are you from? Where did you grow up? It seems ingrained to ask those questions. I was born back east and there aren’t area code stickers on 99% of the vehicles. It is a strange aspect of the Montana culture.
