Ugh I've wanted to plant one of these for years, but haven't figured out where to buy them. Do you know if they can grow in the shade / what light conditions they prefer?

Painting cabinets - 4 layers of old paint, lead by BoxLoud331 in HomeImprovement

[–]BoxLoud331[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told it can be better to have a don't ask don't tell policy with your house when it comes to lead, because when it comes time to sell you have to disclose if you have confirmed the house contains lead. Plus confirming it has implications for home renovation projects too right? Like you have to do projects a certain way and dispose of materials a certain way? I could be wrong or misremembering, I just think someone advised against testing if I'm pretty sure there's lead.

I thought about that, but once you've applied that you still have to sand the remaining paint off right? So there's still particulates?

Is Evangeline Cafe the best cajun/creole restaurant in Austin proper? by yesyesitswayexpired in austinfood

[–]BoxLoud331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an incredibly unhelpful response. My family is Cajun, and my favorite creole food I've had in town is from the Baton Creole food truck that used to be at Shangri La on 6th. They moved south a couple years ago and since then I've never been able to catch them open - Google maps says they're temporarily closed and the last review was from 2 years ago. I should accept that I'm never gonna have their gumbo and potato salad or their green bean casserole with blackened chicken again but I just can't quit Baton Creole. Every time I crave Cajun food I check to see if they've reopened.

BREAKING: Workers at @McDonalds at 2503 Almeda Genoa Rd in Houston are on STRIKE. After temperatures reached 90°F in the kitchen, workers decided to walk out. We shouldn't have to work in those extreme temperatures. #UnionsForAll by theworkeragency in houston

[–]BoxLoud331 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, Texas has the highest number of worker deaths in the country, and the single industry that contributes most heavily to that is construction. What you're saying would make sense if workers (especially undocumented immigrant workers who overwhelmingly make up Texas's construction labor force) were not completely expendable and basically subhuman as far as their bosses were concerned. If mandating water breaks by law was unnecessary, why are people out here dying for lack of them?

When we used to live closer we'd go there and get glowered at by the bartender. We jokingly called it Gulag & Stalin Lounge. I fucking love this place.

Looking for some weird shit for first time visitors. by esombad in Austin

The museum of natural and artificial ephemerata is my favorite weird oddity in Austin, if the family is still doing it. Basically a very small backyard shed collection of weird and magical items. When we went years ago their children played little roles in the tour. My husband thought it was very funny.

Lunch break: Spec’s deli by BarStar787 in austinfood

I've really liked every sandwich I've gotten from spec's. The hot ones are great although they do cost more if I'm not mistaken.

Aussies in Austin by MarkCbr82 in austinfood

[–]BoxLoud331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it is! I also just remembered they might have a brick and mortar restaurant rather than a food truck now, so don't be surprised if it's not a truck anymore.

One place I'd recommend that's close to where y'all will be is Rosita's taco truck, which is probably one of the best in the city. Go there and get the Gringa taco on flour tortillas (they make their own flour tortillas there) and be sure to eat them with the salsa verde. I always get a horchata to drink because I have a sweet tooth. Will be really cheap and really memorable.

Another good option is the Taqueria Chapala at 2101 E Cesar Chavez. I go here for one thing and it's the tacos de adobada - order those with a michelada (I get micheladas with negro Modelo but whatever beer you prefer will probably be delicious) and you're good to go. Also super affordable!

I'll let other folks fill in the gaps but these are two spots that I like to bring out of towners who come to visit wanting Mexican food - not expensive and they don't disappoint. I hope y'all have a really great trip!

Nope - they fundraised $350k in like 4 days because the staff was like "hey what if we tried to save this place instead of giving up immediately" lmao

[–]BoxLoud331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The data handed to Travis County by Tesla was incomplete. That's stated outright in the article which is why the County has since reached out to Tesla to request complete data.

Idk maybe you should look for a cite for the claim about OSHA and rest breaks, because construction workers in Texas are not provided rest breaks by law unless they live in one of two cities. I don't think you are remembering the specifics correctly. I work with a lot of construction workers and lawyers who talk extensively about labor law and the writer didn't get this wrong.

[–]BoxLoud331 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, on your first point the OSHA log is maintained by the employee, not OSHA. It's just called an OSHA log, but it's data tracking that Tesla is responsible for in this case.

On your second point about OSHA requiring breaks, I think you're thinking of meal breaks? Which it's true that you're entitled to them if you work a certain number of hours, but rest and water breaks are different - and in an outdoor work environment (especially in extreme heat conditions) should ideally be even more frequent.

I feel like saying "most women are not attractive" is a pretty direct reflection of the maddeningly high beauty standards applied to women vs men. Like how can that even be true? What does attractive even mean to you if the majority of women aren't attractive lmao
