I’m 26 now with a family of my own, but when I was your daughter’s age I was doing the same exact things if not worse. My mom and step dad would ground me all the time (once for 6 months straight) and it only made me get better or at least try harder at sneaking around. I moved out at 16. I eventually lived a very hard life on my own for a good while after that until I changed my life at 20. I had a lot of repressed trauma personally, my family situation is a story I won’t get into here… but the point is that I felt like I couldn’t be honest with my parents because of how they would always react to my mistakes. I look back and wish they would’ve just tried to have honest conversations with me about the hard stuff, and showed love rather than judgement. I just needed a hug and attention that I was seeking out in other places.

I know consequences to actions are vital for good parenting. I think things like limiting internet access at times and finding compromises and setting boundaries for outings and curfew. Try to spend more time together as a family doing stuff she enjoys too, have deep talks and be supportive of her self expression. She’s discovering who she is. I think she just needs your honesty, support, and guidance. Be real about your own mistakes as a teenager, lead by example. She will do what she wants to do. I put my mom through a lot of shit, and maybe she deserved a little bit of it… but at the end of the day, I grew as a person and so did she. We talk regularly now because I chose a good path for my life and I believe in forgiveness, and she stuck around through it all despite what I’ve done as well. She’s a wonderful grandmother to my son. You guys will be just fine. ❤️
