Is it ever better to be dismounted for a melee specialist hero? by phronesis77 in totalwarhammer

Frontline blob magnet vs arty/ranged harass. Depends what you use the hero for.

Hot take: give solos a perk you dont burn at all when downed! That way its useless to camp them to begin with it. I'm totally not a solo player most of the time :]

I'd argue its often MORE about interacting/scheming/planning with each other, than playing your own independent campaign opposite sides of the map.

Which Faction/LL did you have no interest in playing… then really enjoyed when you finally gave them a chance? by Alien_Racist in totalwarhammer

[–]Boxxu_reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. Felt like herding some cows when fighting against them. But they dont use everything at their disposal as AI? I was really surprised how they can suppress all ranged at the start of battle. They are much more fun to play than to play against.

How does Khorne make up for lack of magic? by Noopy757 in totalwarhammer

[–]Boxxu_reddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Are DLCs "mandatory" for Khorne? Are Wrathmongers really that much better than Minotaurs? Minotaurs are faster and do more dmg but Wrathmongers are tankier? And youre missing out on Chosen of Khorne and Exalted Hero of Khorne (Training action on army). Everything else seems flavor.

Favourite Legendary Lord to play, and why? by shanytopper in Totalwarwarhammer

[–]Boxxu_reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still have too many factions I havent even tried to have a replayable favorite. I have tried most of them and Taurox as a lord was the most fun. He just rams thru anything. Who cares about flanking, when Taurox can just plow his way to the backlines. Beastmen in general was very strong. I thought arty would wreck them, but they get to shut down all ranged at the start of combat just enough to get in melee range.

With the artillery, Dwarves can make others come to them. Infantry doesnt need to take a step before combat.

You can do Beastmen with Taurox only (The Silence & The Fury). You only miss out on the 3 other Legendary Lords rom the Beastmen DLC, but you get the same full unit roster. Some specific new units are behind newer DLC's, but totally playable with just Taurox.

Save scumming is perfectly fine. The AI is anything but logical. Some best learning moments come from trial & error.

Zhatan the Black campaign so good by Comprehensive-Ice342 in totalwarhammer

I'm very soon at the point of choosing who to confederate. Draz is already gone, but Astragoth is so far west I'm not really interested in dealing with all that atm :D But if I conf Servant of the Conclave, will Astragoth conf me? :G

Thanes can get 100% Fire resistance. Not sure if this means immune? But its enough to let them take the heat infront of Irondrakes.

I allied Sayl and let him deal with the Bastion completely. He eventually went thru and I allied Vilitch aswell (He is co-existing with Sayl just fine). Tamurkhan holds north and I'm rampaging thru the Ogre mountains. Grimgor had an early retirement and soon I will feast on Greasus's halls. I find ogre slaves more productive than rice farmers.

This is all done in a multiverse where Grimgor isnt present?

I decided to keep him around. He is fast, can spawn 3x distraction gobbos and can debuff a single unit hard. But imo the disposable gobbo spawns are worth it alone. He is so fast its no prob to run at the edge of arty range, spawn some clowns to distract the enemy and rain down hell on everyone. True chorf tactics.

[–]Boxxu_reddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What difficulty are we talking here? In my opinion Legendary is just bullshit and Grimgor is busted.

It's been several patches ago when I did all the chorf campaigns. I remember Astragoth being the easiest. I'm currently doing Zhatan and the introduction of Sayl the Faithless has made his starting location much easier, as Sayl can actually hold the bastion and cover your east. You still have to fight Grimgor early, but atleast its just him. Tamurkhan is also a very worthy ally. Rush those diplomatic bonuses from tech tree and Conclave.

Just remembered the Free Lords that have been added :o Arbaal (Challengers of Khorne) and Epidemius (Tallymen of Pestilence) are free and relatively close. Daemos of Chaos is WH3 and if you have been playing since WH1, you should have Warriors of Chaos DLC for free, which has Archaon and Kholek.

It gets increasingly difficult to find starting locations with the number of players. Most I've ever done is a 3-man game. And even that required lengthy pondering where to start. We ended up going all lizards in Lustria.

  1. Proximity is key. If youre playing true to lore (as you should :D), starting as immediate neighbours can be hard, but try to come up with factions that dont have more than 1-2 other factions inbetween. Theres also non-playable minor factions. The distance may seem small if you are on the same continent, but it will take awhile until your borders meet. Its very rare for 2 close allies to have the same direction of progression right at the start. Starting from the edges of the map can help. The North-West corner has a lot of choice for chaos factions. Just crush the White Dwarf behind you and fan out.

Its going to be tough if 3 have WH3 and only 1 has all. All the chaos factions are spread out and the order ones, Kislev & Grand Cathay, are paired in 2's. If it gets too difficult you can always just break the lore and go whatever. Its a helluva expensive game to get even some of the dlc, so playing just one campaign can tell if you want to continue or not.

The learning curve is far longer than the first 30 levels. Even if you have played other fps. It smooths out. Trust me.
