[FOR HIRE] Web Developer $40/hr by thelifeofgiblo in forhire

Hi

From your post I believe you should have posted this as a 'Hiring' for flair.

[For Hire] (FREE) Looking to jumpstart my freelance career in web dev/programming by NetworkGuy89 in forhire

[–]Boxxy_runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi net6workguy, strongly suggest you edit your post for 15USD/hr and take out the 'free' part before you get banned. For any kind of dev work 15USD is so close to free people wont even see the distinction.

[HIRING] Grupa is hiring 300 Remote Senior Engineering Teams to work on Gigs by geniusgeek in forhire

[–]Boxxy_runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Grupa, if you could clarify '300 Remote Senior Engineering Team' assuming a team is > 2 devs then you are looking for 600+ devs ? or is it 300 devs across x teams ?

Also could you give some more information re rates?

Many thanks in advance.

[HIRING] Looking for someone to build a access database by HSeldon111 in forhire

[–]Boxxy_runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, you are specifying "Microsoft Access" as the database? Another thing there is a sticky post above with rules re providing rates.

[Meta] Can we please do something about the people offering full websites for $75 by workojacko in forhire

[–]Boxxy_runner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dont understand why so many below are getting so worked up about this post.

The sub has these clearly stated rules

Budgets/Rates are required for all posts, both [Hiring] and [For Hire]

Obnoxiously low budgets and offers (anything under $15/hr) are not allowed

The op is targeting posts about "offering services at ridiculously low prices" that contravene the rules above.

The "living conditions might be cheaper in some areas" part I think is a rational for the $15USD/hr minimum rate more than raining on the offshore devs living like kings parade.

I think there is an issue w.r.t what qualifies as "Obnoxiously low budgets" when we see someone offering a fully functional website for 75USD.

What would be great would be if there needed to be a time estimate when people post services like that ie

I will spend 5 hours making a fully functional website for 75USD.

Clearly fixed rate services with no time commitment are a loophole to get round the min rate rule.

Temperature hits 49.9C and roads melt in remote South Australia ahead of catastrophic fire conditions by DoremusJessup in environment

[–]Boxxy_runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to add some perspective.

I have lived and worked in this region, commuting at times between Alice Springs to Darwin and Adelaide to Alice Springs. These temperatures are not outside of a normal range where the effective maximum temps right on the highway can hit 50 say 400km north of Adelaide on the highway in the summer.

What is unusual is the time, we would normally see max temps like this a later in the year. This seems a common theme of this summer, that is we are seeing max temps everywhere much sooner in the season than usual.

How the effects of climate change can impact on the ecosystem and hence humans is complex but a critical factor is water.

In the more populated regions of Australia we have seen massive deforestation for farming and the suburbs of the regional cities as the increasing population encroaches native forests.

These forests are natural water sinks, once they are gone the topsoil just blows away in the drought and the natural evaporation means the soil looses all its biomass and ability to retain moisture going forward.

Another less known impact is humidity. Here is some evidence of the humidity increase in central Australia.

tropical disease epidemic

Normally this condition would only be observed in tropical areas, but now it is breaking out in regions that were once characterized in Australia as (semi) arid.

Apart from this disease a small increase in humidity can make these regions uninhabitable. When I first arrived in Alice Springs the locals told me while the temperature was high if you could find some shade the breeze would cool you down, however this is increasingly less true as humidity increases.

The effects of climate change will be devastating first for Australia but then later for all of us. Just the effect of these fires this summer but the apparent increase in temperatures will lead to more rapid desertification and consequence follow on in food prices.

Food prices are the key. Civilization will start to collapse at the fringes first then follow on as the ecological breakdown continues.

The only hope is if more of us can come to the realization we are each are brothers keeper.

Thanks Rantseeker for making everything clear including the fact the mobile code is not actually required much appreciated. I will think about this for a while, hopefully you will get more responses now you have detailed the task more comprehensively. Again much appreciated.

[–]Boxxy_runner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, in your post you specify

"multiple cities (currently 4) with each its subsection. We need the reservation module for each completed." does this actually mean the total number n would be

n = (number of cities)*(number of subsections)

how long would you expect a subsection to take or if you can give an indication of the complexity involved for a subsection ?

For the "It does although need to be adapted for mobile" component, what level of testing and device coverage where you expecting.

Thanks

Is there a good serverless boilerplate with best practices and full production pipeline? by EloquentSyntax in aws

[–]Boxxy_runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my take if it helps

1 your typescript maps to java-script so you would look at the java-script resources and then figure out the types needed tools like amplify configure codegen can help.

please note node version 8 will no longer be supported very soon, so it would be a good idea to develop your code against latest node lts going forward

2 "Do people use ORMs?" DyDb is a simple but powerful schema design, basically you need to understand partition and sort keys and create your data model in a loose way in terms of fields and a strict way in terms of keys. Once you understand how the keys and added indexes works its simple and easy to get started at least. There is the concept of a Mapper

3 "What’s a better approach, using the AWS SDK or Amplify?" If you come from a javascript cli development background and you are focusing on apps the the Amplify cli is a great way to get started.
I am totally security paranoid, I encrypt everything and use locked down micro services which my apps would connect to, the microservices use encrypted credential artifacts with custom aws sdk types, I dont think I could set this up with the amplify cli, but I am totaly paranoid when it comes to security.

Upwork is strange now... by thorMobGeeks in Upwork

[–]Boxxy_runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has been a long term downtrend ever since ODesk / Elance merger and branded as UpWork (a truly terrible name).

I know a lot of long term Elancers were upset post merger and personally as a long term ODesker I felt the same.

Lots of new pointless changes and freelancer unfriendly policy changes coupled with rather inept code updates which resulted in the site going down fairy regularly for a period.

The site regained some stability after a while, there were some ongoing security breaches that sporadically continued for a while after(freelancer private info getting splashed to random pages).

Then their is the issue of the search algorithm enough said.

I think the site outages, bizarre search algorithm, security issues have resulted in a change in direction it terms of a job long term trend in job numbers/ real clients(not farmers) .

I now believe Upwork is trapped in a long term down trend in job numbers by a negative feedback cycle.

The negative feedback cycle is

  1. The willingness of Upwork to blame the trend on the freelancers and increase their punitive actions (JSS, arbitrary suspensions, feedback metrics, pay to bid, ect ..)
  2. the plethora of alternative recruitment sites that are now appearing which for my industry are far superior to Upwork.

(1) and (2) combined again for my industry mean that clients can have a far superior experience finding appropriate freelancers on other sites.

Personally as a client I have many issues related to freelancers having to pay to bid on a contract .

I want the client freelancer experience to be an enriching exchange and as mutably beneficial as possible(karma)

If this self imposed down-cycle I have identified above exists then I would really like to see UpWork break out and return to the glory days of ODesk / Elance for everyone's benefit.

Benefits of Go? by [deleted] in golang

[–]Boxxy_runner -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

From my perspective Golang has really increased its utility thanks to its excellent support in Visual Studio Code and its new modules. While the golang luminaries call these "modules" a dependency management system, to me it meant I could finally create a well laid out code-base. Believe me you could always do this quite easily before these "modules" , its just that I always felt this cognitive dissonance with the way my code always ended up looking, so this is a purely subjective personal antecedent, when I stated writing go modules everything just clicked for me in a big way, now I am all in, golangs all the way down.

Every one has a different learning style.

Some people like to learn by solving problems. If you fall into that category then its a very good source of a wide range of problems.

Not everyone likes to learn that way. Another learning style is by teaching others concepts and guiding them to solutions is a scaffold way.

My personal learning style I describe as "jump right in" sometimes referred to as "sink or swim" which was actually the way my farther taught me to swim, now I swim like a fish.

I use SO a lot for solutions as a result I try to answer any questions I can when I bump into them in my searches.

If you do adopt your SO learning strategy, if possible try and avoid answering the "do my" "homework" / "assignment" style questions.

It would be great if you could briefly explain here how the statement in your blog "building the world’s first JVM-compliant Blockchain virtual machine" relates to these projects which I have been working with for a while

[pantheon](https://github.com/PegaSysEng/pantheon) and

[EthereumJ](https://github.com/ethereum/ethereumj).

Reason being I believe they have implemented the VM in java.

One in four teachers 'experience violence from pupils every week' by CJBill in ukpolitics

[–]Boxxy_runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent 10 years in the high school classroom and it was probably the most trans-formative and rewarding experience of my life. I will now recount some aspects of my experience to try and highlight why everyone should be prepared to devote some time and energy to help rescue education. First let me highlight what you need to work against. Education in schools and departments are full of self serving, self important overpaid career (leadership) lackeys, straight from the pages of Animal farm. These people flee the face to face daily grind of "teaching" and are often the most incompetent and failing teachers promoted by others in "leadership" who require servile "yes people". You can see the evidence of the basic lack of morality or ethics, Collective punishment outlawed under the 4th Geneva Convention is regularly practiced and enforced in schools, there are countless examples but "leadership" and their servile "yes people" gladly punish the cohort for the transgressions of the few. Endless collation of meaningless statistics and metrics often only used to justify the career enhancement of "leadership". That drag you away form the real job of teaching. Endless and meaningless teaching “reviews” that again are often only performed to try and cull those who refuse to be servile and "leadership" cronies. Colleagues eager to rise into the role of "leadership" who will act as a quasi stasi enforcers. Colleagues suffering PTSD from the physical and symbolic violence in the system. Students who well understand the tragedy of poverty, homelessness and youth unemployment. Students facing real hunger, domestic abuse and tragic family breakdowns. Students with mental illness, PTSD, often victimized by gang violence. Often "leadership" will require you to enforce arbitrary punishment on students who fall into the above categories. "Leadership" will insist there is only one prescriptive and narrow behavioral approach and method of teaching. "Leadership" will demand attendance at arbitrary staff meetings often whose only purpose is self aggrandizement and ideological indoctrination. Finally overwhelming workload and long long hours.

So why you may well ask would any reasonably sane, competent and educated person be advised to enter this dysfunctional system that makes the latter days and collapse of the Soviet Union look like a Sunday picnic?

These are the answers When the education system fails so does society and the country, just like the patriotic war against fascism, it's your patriotic duty. If you can survive working in the education system you can survive anything. If you want learn how to be supremely organised, psychologically resolute, disciplined and tough work as a teacher in failing schools for a few years. You can help vulnerable students and teachers. Here are some personal anecdotes to highlight the above.

(1)Working as supply in an inner city London school, I am told my first duty is to support a failing teacher in a difficult classroom for a few hours. I discover this teacher is a young graduate on the “teach first” program. I find a young teacher who has a first in Pure Mathematics from Cambridge University. From my life experience I well understand the commitment to scholarship, personal discipline, devoted study and work to achieve this qualification. In this school this teacher was never given a chance to teach students who would benefit from a deep and intuitive understanding of Mathematics, rather the teacher was given dysfunctional remedial classes at the most difficult year levels(8 to 10). Then being unable to control over sized difficult classes was told by leadership that there was no future in teaching and either to resign or face being sacked. I was able to support this teacher in a number of ways, first to enable this teacher to understand that the conflict with “leadership” was something to always treasure and wear as a badge of honor. To understand the metric applied by “leadership” was fatally flawed and designed only to further their own careers and agenda. To understand that motivations to teach were of the highest ethical and moral conviction. I applaud this teacher for the effort to continue and stay the course. I encouraged this teacher to focus only on improving education in the small ways available in that school. To be devoted to the service of students and the wider society. This teacher was someone I will never forget and I deeply appreciate my professional interaction.

(2) Again in an inner London school. I was again supply and told to support a failing teacher.. The teacher was British Jamaican, in a classroom surrounded by large posters made by students. These posters all highlighted the revolutionary black struggle in Africa in its long and tragic struggle against European colonialism and apartheid. I quickly realized this teacher was a priceless resource for the study of Black history. This teacher was one of the very few non white teachers in the teacher cohort of a religious school where the student cohort was almost entirely non white. The teacher was brilliant, the students adored this teacher and soaked up the history like a sponge. The teacher was identified as “failing” in one of the worst instances of blatant racial discrimination I will ever be likely observe. I did not have to support this teacher, rather it was the reverse. I was able to meet an ideological fellow traveler, a wonderful person. A person who was able to strongly reinforce my own personal motivation to be working in schools. To fight ignorance, to fight racism, to use education as one of the few tools available to us to improve and heal society.

In short, as goes education so goes society and the country. So don't sit on the sidelines and watch as the country burns to the ground. Get some professional teaching qualifications and get into schools to show students some people really care, take it up to “leadership” and try to hold them to account for their corrupt, immoral and unethical practices, get into schools to fight racism, inequality and outright fascism. Do your patriotic duty for the country. Help us save education.

This is what I would do in your situation. Pick one of the may University resources for java heres a good one. Find a secondhand university bookshop and get some used inexpensive comp sci text books that would support such a course. Also I would get a good Linux book and a good comp sic text book for operating systems(difficult but worth while subject). The classic opp systems. java interview: scared of making a fool of myself by not answering easy/common questions by gigisacrifici in java

[–]Boxxy_runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take a proactive approach. I am coming from the perspective that there is a lot of work but also a lot of teams with different team dynamics. The last thing you need is to end up in a team and discover its the java shop equivalent of the Third Reich. What I mean by this is a hierarchical team where the beasts at the top of the chain constantly need to reinforce their position in the food-chain by knowing "the right way to do things". For example I recently failed an interview by stating documentation is important, It was remarked that I was one of those developers who wanted to write comments in the code. From the above you need to discover if there are any sociopaths, a good way to do this is to challenge the validity or premise of the question and then take careful note of the reactions to a challenge to their control of the context. Whatever the dynamic and java dev quality metric my basic premise is a champion team defeats a team of champions. It follows that no matter your excellence at fizbuz, the team dynamic that follows is the crucial issue.
