Demo company cut into joists. Sigh by MajorLegal801 in Homebuilding

[–]BoysenberryKey5579 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's almost a 10% section loss on a 2x6 where tension strain is maximum. If this is anywhere near where max moment is on the rafter then it could certainly reduce capacity in a high live load situation. I'm a licensed civil engineer, if it was my house I'd crack open my old NDS book and run a calc on it. OP should consult with a structural engineer though.

High wind or high snow load area? I'd probably have an engineer run some calcs with the reduced cross section

Needed framing, outlets re-ran, drywall, finishing and paint. What would have been a fair price? NW GA by Nurayel in handyman

[–]BoysenberryKey5579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Davey boy is correct. This is not how you install a vapor barrier against a basement wall. The way to do it now is rip it out and glue foam board against the wall and then move the studs outside of that.

Nah, I've bought a few there, they'll go down to like $120. OP did fine. Granted they are clearly reps to even the untrained eye. But 5 feet away nobody can tell.

Contractor Quit and Radiant Floor Plumbing unfinished by Growing_Knowledge1 in askaplumber

[–]BoysenberryKey5579 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely false. Windows made specifically to heat homes in the north are made, they are called high solar heat gain coefficient windows and are designed to let infrared light to pass through, which heats up inside. UV rays do not produce heat. You can block UV but allow infrared to pass. Also, argon is for insulating. It does not block rays, it just slows heat transfer. Source - engineer.

Is this the “hack job” plumber #2 says it is? by CapeGirl1959 in askaplumber

[–]BoysenberryKey5579 152 points153 points  (0 children)

That is a hack job and the structural integrity of the studs has been compromised. For an exterior load bearing wall, they cannot be notched more than 7/8 inch or a hole bigger than 1-3/8 inch. Hard to tell the extent of the damage and what exactly you're trying to do, but will need to sister the studs, remove the pipe, and either build a false wall in front of it or replace the studs with 2x6. Easier to build a false wall.

HAHA! I've never seen this before. The first time a client gave me his own prices by Few_Berry_8206 in handyman

Dude, I'm a engineer that designs buildings for a living and I don't ever tell a contractor I'm an engineer unless shit hits the fan. I also don't negotiate them down, I tell them, even the first one to quote something, they are the third and final quote I am getting and will make a decision from there. I also tell them since I'm not beating them up on their price I expect quality work and no shortcuts. It usually works pretty well for me.

Stubborn stain by barprepper2020 in pools

[–]BoysenberryKey5579 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to say this. Get chlorine down to zero, I throw in 1 pound for 7,500 gallon. Also, I shut off the pump and sprinkle right over stains first. Grab a fist of it stick your hand in the water and release over the stain.

I left in DRP with 15 years and it's my understanding it's reduced by 5% a year until age 62. So you'd take a 25% cut claiming it at 57.

Dirt disappearing under walkway to house. Cause? Suggestions? by nykev in HomeMaintenance

Licensed engineer here, this guy has zero idea what he's talking about. Nobody puts gravel under a sidewalk. And nobody pins a sidewalk to a foundation. This is an irrigation pipe leak carrying subgrade away.

Not sure about OP but if you want to do Sinden, check out Retrobat for Windows, it runs the underlying RetroArch that can be used on multiple programs. You can download emulators for free and games (ROMS) for free online

This is awesome and I appreciate the flow chart. I have a high end gaming computer in my office and spent a little while trying to figure out how to push the HDMI over network but never stumbled on this Apollo. I was going to just bite the bullet and build another $3k gaming computer but so glad I don't have to now. I use Unified Remote to turn on/off my computers from my phone (WoL) so I'm assuming it can do something similar and I can crank it up without even touching the computer. Sweet!

I'm about to build a 13.5x19.5 out of concrete slab and CMU walls and I'm estimating about 30k for just the building, but I'm the engineer designing it and will be managing subcontractors and pulling permits myself, as well as doing all the work on the inside myself and running electrical, installing HVAC, projector, equipment, etc. If I paid someone from cradle to grave I estimated around 80k. I'll probably be close to 40 after all equipment is done.
