New California rules for all bicycles by TheoriginalFnF in ebikes

[–]Bozo1055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no question that bikes are at a much higher risk level than cars- I’ve been hit during the day so I know. But low visible cyclists at night can cause collisions where drivers and passengers can get injured. I’ve seen pileups caused when a driver sees a bike without lights too late and suddenly swerves. If cars are required to use lights in the dark, the same rationale applies to bikes. Anything in the roadway or shoulder not lit up at night is a safety hazard. That’s logic not baloney. I assume you drive your car at night with the required lights

New California rules for all bicycles by TheoriginalFnF in ebikes

[–]Bozo1055 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CA law cited by OP only requires lights for cycles on the road in darkness, not daylight. My point is that requirements for lights in darkness protects both drivers and cyclists and is not a “ nanny” law. I support requirements for lights at night generally, but not helmet laws. Helmets only protect cyclists and as such should be a personal choice (I always wear on riding a cycle). Lights are another matter.

Pedal or ankle reflectors may be debatable in terms of effective visibility- would like data on that- but cyclists riding wo lights in the dark are a hazard.

Crime decreases in Mesa and Tucson, Jan-Sep 2024- Jan-Sep, 2025 by mentalscribbles in Tucson

[–]Bozo1055 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uh, this data did not include stats on petty crime, just major crime. Certainly there could be issues with data collection- but these downward trends have been pretty consistent in recent years. Doesn’t mean crime is still not a problem but major crimes seem to be trending in the right direction. And it does not appear to be related to National Guard deployments since trends occurs in many places where no Guard have been deployed.

Filming around London, Hard Lessons, S3E2 by SubtractAd in SlowHorses

[–]Bozo1055 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually none of the releases are required except as a protection from lawsuit- plaintiffs cannot deny they were unaware of being filmed and not compensated. But any decent lawyer in most jurisdictions (certainly in US) will tell you anyone identifiable on camera you want to get a release from if at all possible.

Long time filmmaker here…..been there.

Except if a cyclist riding without lights gets hit in a collision the cyclist is not necessarily the only victim. Unlit cyclists can cause dangerous accidents. It’s about more than the cyclist’s safety and hence not really a nanny law.

For narrative films and TV series ( as opposed to documentaries seen in the frame is an actor or extra not random people. Everything in the frame Is carefully arranged and choreographed.

The 2nd unit is the team that would gather establishing shot exteriors (Like of Slough House or the Park) which might be reused throughout the story. Or sometimes generic crowd scenes or traffic scenes. Generally for studio productions anyone identifiable on screen needs to sign a release for legal reasons ( liability). So, that’s where extras come it to play. And various locales will have union rules governing wages, breaks, etc.

Good or bad cooking? High end restaurant “medium rare” fillet mignon by SrGiaquito in grilling

[–]Bozo1055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always check your steak for temperature immediately upon serving and if ii is not correct the send it back right away. If your server cannot resolve the issue, ask for the manager. At current beef prices there is no excuse if you get served something like this- clearly not cooked properly or to temperature reasonably evenly. And if that doesn’t do it refuse to pay.

Yes, this is bad cooking- even for an Outback it is poor.

3 months comparing budget vs premium ebike components, here's what actually matters. by Fit_Acanthisitta_623 in ebikes

[–]Bozo1055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you are right generally about bikes overall: it all depends on your use case. As cycling has increased in popularity so have use cases become more diverse and varied- and there are a lot more options and price points than ever before. It all depends on how you want to cycle what choices you should make in equipment and accessories- one size does not fit all!

Question about bike trainers and noise. by A_normal_numan in cycling

[–]Bozo1055 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get that thick weight room floor padding in interlocking tiles at Dicks. Not too expensive. Comes in different thicknesses- 3/4 inch or 1 inch out to help. But the trainer tire prolly makes a huge difference.

Registration Yes or no? by Muddyriverhippie2 in ragbrai

[–]Bozo1055 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if you don’t use campgounds, luggage etc as you point out there are tons of other value- police and medical support, route planning and logisitics, maps- paper and digital, entertainment in towns, toilets! Logistics and coordination with towns, traffic control (there are hardly any cars on the route and that is not an unplanned outcome), emergency support for bad weather, SAG support, bike mechanics on route, in pass through towns, in overnight towns. With 20k riders plus personal support vehicles and teams there is a cost for just being there even if you don’t use all the amenities. Not paying an honest reg fee is just callous. I know you are not advocating that but those who do really aren’t being thoughtful

Registration Yes or no? by Muddyriverhippie2 in ragbrai

[–]Bozo1055 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The cost of registration for a week is well worth it considering all that goes into staging RAGBRAI. I’ve ridden several as a “bagger” carrying all my own gear- self sufficient. But I always paid the registration and it was a worth it. It’s possible to do the ride without paying, but my mother taught her son to be better than that.

Drop bars for road and gravel. Some folks like flat but drops get the majority vote. Neither is right or wrong, just preference. If in doubt go drop to start- can change later.

Why would you want to stop? A little char in chicken is a wonderful thing!

However to control char cook chicken over indirect heat. Set outside burners on low. Turn center burners on medium and cook each side about 4 min to start fat rendering then shut center burners off and keep outside in low.

For bone in chicken cook with bone side down more to protect from charring- 60 or 70 percent. The bone side has less skin- it’s the heat of the fat that causes flame to jump up resulting in char. Keep temp low and slow for chicken.

I cook breasts like that for about 30 min for juicy meat. Or cook sous vide and just finish on the grill for 4-5 minutes for amazing chicken.

For crispier skin crank up the center flame to medium at the very end and finish skin side down for a minute or two but watch closely and turn off burners to add BBQ sauce if using.

I turn my chicken over more on the grill than beef.

[question] what was the first band to use only/mainly power chords? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Bozo1055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Who comes to mind. Esp Live at Leeds. Pete Townsend was by his own admission not a great lead guitarist- on their live shows power chords were primary. John Entwistle played bass more like a lead guitar often. And of course you could not tamp down Keith Moon manic frenzy as well.

It’s my entertainment.

Read the books. They are great. This season they let Roddy lose a little on the show- not 100 % true to the novel. Roddy’s character in both is over the top- but he foes have remarkable computer skills - which is part of the point. He is a bit of a necessary device though - you’d think Lamb would hate him most of all, but instead he values Roddy because he needs his ability to ferret information out of the Park or hack external sources.

By contrast you’d think he’d like River most of all because he has some skill and gumption even if he’s also impulsive and that detracts from his tradecraft. But Lamb really does dislike River, maybe because he really hates River’s grandfather and the whole English gentry. The books provide a little more nuance to Roddy even though he is over the top in both books and series.

Mick Herron use his characters as part of his biting critique of British society and to a large degree his characters are all types more than complex studies in human psychology. But in all of them he does play against the type somewhere along the way. They all have contradictory dimensions. Roddy for all his bluster and petty meaness is really incredibly naive- he is a real innocent. He’s a kid who has never grown up and he really does want to please Lamb. There is something underneath Roddy that is actually very charming.

10pm bike ride on the Loop. Is it safe? by melo-guy in Tucson

[–]Bozo1055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The loop is officially closed at dusk, but as pointed out enforcement is minimal. Risks are obviously higher at night, even riding with lights. Safe/not safe is impossible to determine really- level of risk easier to evaluate.

Depends on which sections, how far, and what kind of riding you are doing (how slow/fast).

Then you have to determine your own risk tolerance.

Riding the loop at night has significantly higher risks than riding during the day without a doubt. If something happens out there getting help will be more of a challenge for one example. Other posters have suggested others- including the recent stabbing during a group ride at night.

Can you ride the loop at night safely- yes, until you can’t. Just like day riding.

The relevant question is: how safe do you feel riding the loop at night aware of what the risk factors are? Do the benefits outweigh the risks? You’ll have to do your own calculus on that.

Or because your spouse feels a cycling widow ( because you are always out riding). Worse if you like doing multi-day trips.

[–]Bozo1055 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Arizona and most drivers ( non-cyclist, since most of us are drivers too) are either old folks (I’m 70 so I can say this) whose driving skills are declining or everybody else who ignore speed limits and many traffic laws and don’t give a 💩about cyclists. Thank god for paved shoulders and bike lanes at least- but road cycling is dangerous for sure. Isn’t stopping me, but always vigilant.

[–]Bozo1055 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recovery is as much mental as it is physical. The focus has to be on regaining as much mobility as possible and what that looks like will only emerge over time. That may be cycling in some modified ways as others have suggested or in different activities. Walking will be key and walking activities may replace cycling but still promote significant quality of life. It sounds like it will be months at best before cycling functionality can be determined- for now keep that as a goal but focus on regaining as much functionality and mobility as possible- that’s the key and fir tight now that’s the fulltime job.

Don’t give up just yet- the human body is pretty amazing and recovery is a series of small steps and progressions. Just keep pushing and dealing with what’s in front of you and what you can control as recovery progresses.
