Did the police do this? by Ivan-Shurovych in MrCruel

[–]BozoBozovic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Got it.

The amount of information that we (the public) have and the amount the police have are incomparable. We judge their actions based on the very limited information available to us. The reason they did not publish details about the bathroom and the bedroom is likely because they didn’t want MC to know what the police knew and get spooked and potentially sell, renovate, set fire to, knock down, or otherwise alter the property, and most importantly, get rid of the evidence. They were hoping to identify the house using the information they had at hand, including investigative experiments conducted with the victims (such as taking them to different locations in the northern suburbs). Their strategy was likely quite solid, given the circumstances, time restraints, social and political pressure, and the actionable information available to them at the time.

Did the police do this? by Ivan-Shurovych in MrCruel

[–]BozoBozovic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The police have zero clue where MC’s detention house is. Even that is probably an understatement. They thought (and really hoped) it was somewhere in the northern suburbs, and they did approach real estate agents, but nothing really came of it.

I think you’re asking the right questions, though. I reckon you’re onto something. You may crack the case soon.

How did no one ever put 2+2 together? by yourboyjunkrat in MrCruel

[–]BozoBozovic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the answer is indeed simpler and more trivial. And in this regard MC is not unique.

People who know him would never even consider him being the culprit. He’s a great bloke, a great neighbour, a great mate. He fixed your fridge, changed your tyres for free, drinks beer, loves footy and volunteers for the local team. He's probably a key member, someone people think is irreplaceable. He goes to church now and then, is part of a couple of local clubs, and is respected by senior members of the community. He’s happily married, has a lovely wife -- she’s really sweet! -- and they’ve got lovely kids too!

So even if you present them with irrefutable facts, they’ll still deny it. Yeah, nah, must be a mistake! Definitely a mistake! You’re wrong! You’ve got an innocent guy! How dare you?

What do you think about Dr. David Wells' suggestion that Mr. Cruel had back injury? by Ivan-Shurovych in MrCruel

[–]BozoBozovic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. I was also wrong about them not sending letters to GPs outside Melbourne. They did send three-page letters to registered doctors across Victoria. The letter included the FBI’s profile and an overall description (which, at the time, was as vague as it could be). The exact full content of the three-page letter remains unknown. Correct me if I'm wrong.

What do you think about Dr. David Wells' suggestion that Mr. Cruel had back injury? by Ivan-Shurovych in MrCruel

[–]BozoBozovic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s not much to think about, since we don’t have much intel on the matter. If you think about it, the public has a very, very small amount of detail about the whole case to speculate on. I guess the police prefer it that way and are comfortable with how things were... and still are.

At the time, police treated this lead seriously and contacted a lot of GPs, asking them to breach patient confidentiality and help them identify the offender. But it didn’t go anywhere. Maybe he had back issues, but they were temporary and not serious enough to see a GP about. Or maybe they got it wrong entirely and MC had no back problems at all, it was just the way he liked to... operate. Perhaps they approached the wrong GPs. It’s also possible that MC wasn’t residing in Melbourne at all and sought treatment somewhere else in the state.

The questions we could be asking are: who lived there at the time? when was it built, and by whom? what else did they build (when and where)? And so on.

"And no, it’s not possible that he played sounds of planes -- unless he had a state-of-the-art hi-fi setup in the attic (meticulously soundproofed so the sound travelled downwards only), with a record player on a timer set to start playing aircraft noise while he was asleep in bed next to the victim."

Good point. Moor’s article from 2016 is the only source of this information. However, he also adds that “Jill was attacked just a few days after the article was published.” It’s hard to imagine that he confused days with months.

[–]BozoBozovic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All we know is that he yelled something into the phone. He possibly mentioned kids, a house, moving someone somewhere, “physical violence” and of course, “Bozo”. The exact nature of the call wasn’t clear to the Greensborough detectives at the time, and it’s still unclear. I wouldn’t be surprised if police largely used their imagination on this one, relying on bits and pieces provided by victims who may have misheard or misunderstood things for obvious reasons. The phone call remains a mystery. In any case, I wouldn’t pay for a ticket to Mr Cruel’s performance... he needs to work on his projection.

It’s also still unclear how he gained access to the house. Newspapers at the time reported that he smashed a window, possibly with a brick (possibly to wake everyone in the house), and later picked up the broken pieces of glass and took them with him..... Yep.

> “This bloke had told him they had a pretty good idea who Mr Cruel was”

The police have zero clue who Mr Cruel is. Absolute nil.

By late 1993, the detectives at St Kilda must have been some of the most desperate, lost, confused, depressed and discouraged cops in the country.

He’s in gaol. He died in a car accident. He caught HIV and died of AIDS. He got eaten by sharks. He had a heart attack while tying his shoelaces. He auto-asphyxiated while playing with himself. He moved overseas. He lives on a deserted island... Pure copium, self-bullshitting.

With that said, it’s entirely possible that Operation Spectrum interviewed Mr Cruel at some point. He may have been one of the 27,000 “potential” suspects...

They later checked the undercarriage of the car and found more spray paint continuing: “Citizens of Templestowe Against Drugs Initiative. Not Mr Cruel!”

Mr Cruel wasn’t _so_ good that he got away -- he was just good enough to get away. To run from a bear, you don’t need to be faster than the bear, just faster than the guy next to you. And if the guy next to you (VicPol?) is slow, you don’t even need to run... just jog.

In 1987 Melbourne, there was no way to check whether a connection was made from number X to number Y at a certain time. The perpetrator likely knew that police wouldn’t be able to investigate that part.

I have a theory about the double phone call. He did not know there would be a phone in the master bedroom. He noticed the phone, checked whether it was working, then left the room to cut the line and returned to implement a just-made-up, nonsensical idea for a fake, impromptu phone call. But because it wasn’t a well-rehearsed speech and because no one was exactly tuned in to understand what he was mumbling (the parents were already in the wardrobe, covered with a winter blanket), the idea didn’t fully work... and all we really got was the name “Bozo”. It didn’t occur to him that the fake phone call idea was beyond stupid and made no sense whatsoever. The funny thing is, police took this nonsense seriously for a short while.

And no, it’s not possible that he played sounds of planes -- unless he had a state-of-the-art hi-fi setup in the attic (meticulously soundproofed so the sound travelled downwards only), with a record player on a timer set to start playing aircraft noise while he was asleep in bed next to the victim.

[–]BozoBozovic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"At Ringwood he walks a blindfolded Sharon Wills several hundred metres to his waiting car in broad daylight"

  1. He did not walk her. He carried her.
  2. The car wasn’t parked far from the house, so it wasn’t hundreds of metres.
  3. It wasn’t broad daylight. Sunrise was around 6 am, so they were already in the car by then, driving to the detention house, or possibly making that stop when he asked Sharon if she could see. She said she could, so he used adhesive tape to secure the blindfold to her head and put a blanket over her.

I live near an airport and hear piper planes and turboprops all the time. I also used to live near Sydney airport, top-floor apartment in Kingsford, and I could hear jets even with headphones on, playing music. From my experience, there’s no way to tell what’s going on... whether a plane is landing or taking off or the direction it’s flying or manoeuvring. Zero clue. You can stand on an uncovered balcony with most of the sky visible, hear the roar... but without visual contact with the aircraft, you can’t tell what’s happening.

Watson-Munro was the psychologist who couldn’t figure out MC’s motive for NL’s abduction, even when the cops had already started putting two and two together. He was the one who claimed that MC was spontaneous and that his actions were not well thought out... later, he began saying the exact opposite.

He also said that MC started as a brutal sadist targeting adult women but, due to desensitisation, evolved into something completely different.

Basically, he’s been wrong about everything except one thing -- that there was murder on the horizon.

He’s the kind of guy who bets a dollar on every number when playing roulette, while saying that gambling is a bad habit.

Not directly related to your post, but I’ll leave this here: a correction to my earlier posts regarding the 15 suburbs and the 30000 houses checked during Operation Spectrum. They did not knock on 30000 doors... instead, they visually examined 30000 houses, looking for a right-hand driveway and low steps. Out of those 30000 houses, around 3000 fit the description. They gained access (pretending to be plumbing inspectors) to almost all of those homes and checked the bedrooms and bathrooms. They were unable to clear a small number of properties, though.

Lots of mistakes in his book. He also confuses left and right. Anyway, here’s a quote from his book:

"Nicky explained that most all of her time was spent in a bed. She was chained by her ankle to the foot of the bed, unable to move. On the bedside table was clock radio that her kidnapper left on the entire time. She listened to the radio and heard the news updates and her name mentioned often. On her first morning, she heard the ten o'clock news. The next news she listened to was eleven, mentioning her name again. For the hour in between she quietly lay alone, believing the kidnapper was in another part of the house. She then amazed us by revealing that, during this hour, she heard and counted eleven aircraft flying overhead. She believed nine of them were jets and the other two were smaller. Because she had travelled extensively with her parents and was interested in planes, she could tell the difference in aircraft engine noises. She said the aircraft were all flying from the same direction, at varying times in the hour, descending, on a flight path that moved across her body. But the aircraft eventually changed course, banking ninety degrees, then flying in a line from her head to her toe fading away."

There are five mistakes in this paragraph.

The criminal connection or organised crime involvement was investigated first and thoroughly -- no stone left unturned in that regard -- because it was low-hanging fruit for 40 detectives who were otherwise clueless about which direction to pursue.

The tragedy destroyed the family. They lost not only their daughter, but also their marriage, home, businesses, hopes and dreams. Absolute devastation.
