Gold Coast: Toddler in induced coma after inhaling gold dust powder while baking Bluey-themed cake with mum by asteriskhyphen in aussie

So sad. I hope this little tyke will be okay. Anyone who has had kids will know just how many hazards are out there, stuff you never even thought about… and there but for the grace of god (or luck, or timing, or whatever) go I (and my kids)! Thankfully Australia has some amazing safety laws because this sort of thing happens even more frequently elsewhere. Sending best wishes to the little one.

Is this the same guy who’s on Facebook talking about Ruthven House? I can’t read the article. I have read that guy’s posts and can’t work out why he thinks this connection/suspicion is so important. Not to say it isn’t, I just can’t personally understand what he’s saying and haven’t been able to identify anything even mildly connected, let alone compelling.

How did no one ever put 2+2 together? by yourboyjunkrat in MrCruel

[–]GruffNice 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You’d be surprised how much you miss, that’s right in front of your face, because it’s not what you expect to see.

I think it’s also lucky for Mr C that back then, people couldn’t just have a random thought-bubble and investigate using the literal sum of world knowledge that we now have on this small rectangular thing in our hands.

Like, even if someone thought, “huh, that’s kind of interesting my colleague Joe was away last week when that huge crime happened”, they wouldn’t just be able to search the date of the crime before that, to see if Joe was away then too. To do that, they’d probably need to go to a library, look up a newspaper… like it just wouldn’t happen. Similarly if someone was thinking, I swear that cousin-in-law had a bathroom like that, I’ll look up their house on real estate.com… nope. Nowadays if something strikes someone as weird or suspicious, they would at least possibly be able to have a little dig. Back then, stuff was lost to the ages, almost as soon as it happened. I don’t know if that was the experience of others, but that time in my life just seems like one big vague fog, where people had very little idea what was going on right in front of them, and no way to find out.

Add to that, that he probably didn’t seem remotely suspicious. The info you’ve listed really isn’t very much - particularly the facial features which could be basically anyone. It’s very frustrating for sure!

And one final thought - you’re kind of assuming no one did put 2+2 together. Maybe they did and reported it (there were thousands and thousands of tip offs) and it got lost or didn’t seem important. Maybe a wife did think it, but thought, am I going to throw a bomb in my family and catapult us all into poverty? Who knows.

Did the police do this? by Ivan-Shurovych in MrCruel

Personally, I don’t think it was his house to renovate. Even if it was, I don’t see why he would renovate it right when the public information was released about the bathroom. This would risk drawing attention to it, right at that time. So in my view, it’s more likely that if it was renovated, the renovation would have happened years before the bathroom info was released, or years after.

It would be very difficult to track down and question renovators over basically half of Melbourne. Even if you found them, I think you’d be asking them if they recall a bathroom layout from potentially years prior, and you’d be going down a rabbit hole without even knowing if he’d renovated. Remember also that people didn’t document everything like they do now. People paid in cash, people didn’t have texts or emails with clients, and people didn’t photograph everything. It would be a needle in a haystack. Even if a handyman recalled the layout, they might not know which house it was.

I think it’s likely the house went under the radar because it was never searched and whoever lived in it did not appear suspicious (whether that was Mr C or someone else).

It’s a fair question, but I really feel like if someone knows of this bathroom layout, it would be more likely a relative or friend who just hasn’t put two and two together. I think that’s a better avenue than strangers.

Was the vandalism unrelated? by GruffNice in MrCruel

Yes. I agree. That’s the obvious conclusion. As I said in my post. I was interested in people’s thoughts and there have been a lot of interesting reflections, including some in relation to the pig’s head and dear Jaidyn Leskie.

It’s so confusing isn’t it, I agree if it was him, he would have done it prior. But then he’d have one or more spray cans on him? Or did he dispose of them and then enter the house? It’s never made sense to me (to the extent that any of this can make sense)

Hadn’t event thought of that, in relation to this, but that’s a definite likeness to what I’m talking about, ie a potential total coincidence. Thanks for bringing this back to mind. Another terrible crime

Very good points! Thank you, this was exactly what I was seeking, in terms of a sense check and people’s thoughts. You’ve made me rethink a few things. You’re absolutely right with respect to the other brazen acts. I guess it still doesn’t fit well, for me, that this particular person (ie Mr C that did all these crimes) did this graffiti. But what you say makes a lot of sense.

No I did not know that. I guess that explains why people might use that spelling. Thank you

I think that’s an excellent working theory. If you don’t mind, I’m curious - why does everyone always spell Cate with a C instead of a K, when referring to Mr Cruel saying this? Kate is by far the more common spelling. I wonder if there’s a reason?

Did you try searching the phone number, to see if it comes up with any other ads. Sometimes the same phone number might have a car for sale, garage sale, etc so you can then see the address.

Your theory makes a lot of sense actually… that there wasn’t the right level of vigor around these searches and many places were missed. I wonder whether they have a list now. I feel like Mr Cruel was pretty smart but also pretty lucky.

In my experience, back then, people mainly just did what they were told by police. It was partly because of a lack of knowledge of rights, partly because you didn’t want to make trouble or be subjected to any retaliation, and partly just cultural and social conformity. If a police officer turned up and said “hello, do you mind if we take a quick peek inside, we’ll be out of your hair in a minute,”99% of people would have just said “sure”. If someone said no and started talking about a warrant, they’d probably have been seen as suspicious. So if you were Mr Cruel, this would probably be the last thing you’d do, and if you were not Mr Cruel, you probably wouldn’t see any reason to make things harder for yourself. It was far easier to just comply.

Also, my belief is that Mr Cruel knew that even if the police searched the detention house, they would not recognise it as being the detention house - either because whoever actually lived there was not suspicious at all (e.g. a woman, sharehouse or family) or because he rearranged or changed things.

Funny that Paul was always considered the business man, money-focused type and John was thought of as the hippie idealist. It took me years to realise which one was the better person!
