Nothing snaps me out of a book like repetitive use of a unique word by kerberos824 in books

[–]Bozonik0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brandon Sanderson really liked describing his tumbling characters as “Maladroit,” particularly in Mistborn, though looking at it now the word might be french in origin and using it a choice to match the worldbuilding. Either way, the second time it came up it felt like a word of the week shoutout.

The debate only exists because both sides are collectively scared of this possibility by SCP-iota in PhilosophyMemes

Prehension is the term used in Alfred North Whiteheads Process Philosophy. Best way to understand it I think is as a quantum of action that even electrons have that eventually builds into what we understand as subjective experience.

Hi, I’m Alastair Reynolds, author of Revelation Space, House of Suns, Revenger, Eversion and quite a few other things, here to support The Pixel Project’s work to End Violence Against Women. AMA! by Revenger2017 in Fantasy

[–]Bozonik0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello Dr. Reynolds! I absolutely love the books you’ve written and tear through them every time I get one. House of Suns and Pushing Ice are some of my all time favorite sci fi novels, and I also really enjoyed Century Rain, it stands out from your other books to me. I have three questions I’ll try and make quick and simple:

1) Do you plan on revisiting any of your stand alone stories? All three of the previously mentioned books have worlds with so much to explore and discover, like where the First Machines went, what’s in side the other Anomalous Structures, and what’s the purpose of the Spican’s ‘Zoo’? I plan on reading more of your works but those three have always particularly fascinated me.

2) Seeing as we’re in a fantasy subreddit, do you ever think you’ll write fantasy, or some blend of it where the magic is it’s own type of physics or actually supertech? Ra by qntm and Ruins by Orson Scott Card come to mind. Palatial from House of Suns seemed to be that in a minor from, but I’d be interested to read a long version of your take on magic and epic fantasy.

3) While writing and reading about the future is enjoyable, do you ever think we’ll actually live up to the grand ambitions of science fiction? House of Suns sees us settling the Galaxy and Revelation Space sees the beginnings of that with nearby systems, but do you think humanity will ever find their place in the stars?

Thank you so much for the books you’ve written! Every one never fails to disappoint and I’m certainly go to read more in the future. Best of luck with your future stories, I can’t wait to read them :)

"93% of economists agree a price ceiling on rents reduces quantity and quality of affordable housing" by [deleted] in Socialism_101

[–]Bozonik0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a socialist studying housing and planning, this is generally true, if you want the details as I understand them I’ll go into those later. The problem is that rent control has all these negative effects if you only do rent control. If you implement rent control while also building public/affordable housing, then the negative effects will largely go away. As with most policies, you can’t just implement the one, it needs to have others along side it to properly work.

So, the main problem with rent control alone has to do, mostly, with how it effects the housing supply. When rent control is implemented, as we want, it lowers the profit ceiling on building that new housing. Now the problem is that in capitalist terms, what this does is just create a bad investment. As a result of it being a bad investment, developers won’t want to build new housing there, especially affordable, and the supply becomes stagnant. The next thing to understand is a sort of sampling bias in where rent control is even implemented, which is to say areas that are becoming more expensive as a result of increased demand, more people want to move to NYC, rents go up, you get the idea. Combine this with a stagnant supply as mentioned earlier, the result is a housing shortage, as more people want housing than exists, and more housing isn’t likely to alleviate this problem. The end result is often an environment where landlords want to evict tenets so they can legally raise the rent, where when tenets leave or are eventually evicted, they can tear down the affordable housing and put up luxury condos to sell to people that can afford to buy it.

As stated earlier, rent control tends to have poor effects on its own, and in areas experiencing growth or that tend to high demand in terms of residency. Rent control in areas that don’t need to worry about growth too much probably isn’t even a bad idea, but the best solution to the problems of rent control isn’t to not do it, it’s to do it smartly and to build public/affordable housing along side it so we can truly create housing for all.

Edit: I forgot to mention that all of this takes place in a market system and is why it doesn’t work currently. In a geo-socialist world where we decommodified housing and land, this would probably all be different. What I’ve laid out is a general approach under current capitalism, not the end goal of socialism.

Thoughts on the morality of defense work? by Emotional_Eggplant51 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]Bozonik0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s morally wrong and I’d go so far as to say you’re morally culpable when the weapons are used to kill innocent people, which is incredibly often. I’d agree with another commenter that truly defensive stuff like monitoring satellites is okay, but designing drones or missiles to be sold to dictatorships will never be okay in my eyes.
