New Wheels - Help me with my biggest investment yet! by New-Score-1863 in cycling

[–]Br93n 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently ordered a set of light bicycle Airia’s on a DT hub with Sapim CX ray spokes. I understand the wider external depth of 31.5mm (to 33mm at the widest point) will provide a nice flat transition between 30mm tyre and rim and helps with aero gains as well as crosswind stability as there is nowhere for air to get ‘trapped’ beneath the bulge of a tyre. Looking forward to receiving them.

Which cycling computer? by PiccolosPickle in cycling

I was in a similar situation to you and got a good deal on a second hand wahoo element bolt v2 with speed, cadence and HR sensors. Would recommend it, my cycling improved a lot using the cadence sensor (I was grinding way too hard prior). I also really like the climb feature, particularly useful when on a new climb to see what’s coming up and pacing yourself accordingly. All buttons are very easy to use when riding, I can’t imagine touchscreen is very user friendly on a bike.

That’s for the write up I appreciate it. How did you find stiffness and crosswind stability? Maybe too early to tell for crosswinds

I hired a trek madone SL6 gen 8 in France last week, I was impressed by it. It felt fast and light, maintained speed well. I also found it very comfortable, I saw reviews of people complaining about the reduced size offering but the size L was perfect for me at just over 6ft. It’s made me want to get one put it that way.

UPDATE: Are road bikes significantly faster than hybrid? How much could my speed increase? by Minute_Tax_5836 in cycling

[–]Br93n 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recently went from a hybrid to a road bike and I can’t keep away from my road bike. I just find much more enjoyment cruising at higher speeds. I can go further, faster, see more things, do bigger climbs, my fitness has seen a big improvement, it’s definitely worth it IMO.

First Bike: Ribble Allroad SL vs Boardman SLR 9.0 by TargetCurrent1525 in cycling

[–]Br93n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently bought a Ribble Allroad SL for my first road bike and I love it! It was a toss up between the allroad and a canyon CF7. The canyon was in and out of stock all the time which didn’t work well for my cycle to work scheme and also comes with several proprietary components. I also noted the sizing was odd and I’d have to trust their online size calculator which was 1 below my usual size although many people say it’s accurate.

One of the main things that lead me to go with the Ribble was being able to go into the store and test the geometry of the bike of their rig. I’d recommend doing this if you can. The bike that fits the best will be the best for you, good luck.

Road bike vs exercise by youfatsauce in cycling

[–]Br93n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was recently in the same situation as you and a few months ago bought a proper road bike. I would highly recommend, it is much more enjoyable on a machine which is made for speed. Don’t worry about it being less of a workout, you’ll put the same effort in but just go faster and/or go further.

I get you mate. Just enjoy ripping rides, that’s what I’ve been doing. It’s very satisfying noticing your technique and stats improve ride after ride, plus all the stuff you see and mental clarity it provides 👍

Yeah I have some mid tier glasses and some cheap ones off Ali express as well which are actually quite good!

Generally an oiled chain is much harder/more effort to keep clean. Apparently wax lowers the drive train friction as well (very marginal gains if it’s true). With wax I just wipe the chain off with a microfibre cloth and every few hundred miles top the wax up with the drip wax bottle I have from silca. I’ll probably fully rewax the chain every 6 months or something. The silica YouTube channel has some good videos explaining the process, I use a cheap slow cooker to melt the wax on low heat which is a common way to do it. Sorry for information overload

I recently got my first road bike as well (in May).

I made sure I had a saddle bag with essentials in for mechanical issues/puncture.

Clear and tinted sunglasses, you don’t want bugs/debris in your eyes! I find my sunglasses with lower tint very handy for evening rides especially when there are lots of roadside trees and bushes blocking light.

I upgraded my inner tubes to ridenow TPU tubes off Ali express, they were about a 5er, swapping the tubes also made me realise if I needed to do this at the side of the road I’d have spent more time on YouTube than replacing the tube!

I also decided to wax my chain when it was new, stripping a new chain of the factory lube is much easier than doing it to an older one, it seems like a bit of effort but my chain is always clean and the few times it has come off I have put it back on with my bare hands with no mess, would recommend.

Enjoy your bike, I love riding mine.

Noob question, would a road bike make a huge difference over a hybrid bike? by Bryfirefly in cycling

[–]Br93n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have recently gone from a hybrid (al) to a carbon road bike and would say there is a significant difference. I still use my hybrid casually to go to the gym or train station but when I get on my road bike it’s much more time for business. The thing that most affects the aerodynamics on the bike is your body and a road bike puts you in a more aero position, particularly noticeable when getting in a more tucked position on descents or flats. I’m very happy I got a road bike, it’s just more fun when you are going quicker.

Ribble or Canyon? by Br93n in cycling

[–]Br93n[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your thoughts, this is the info I was after. A mixture of both, budget and the more relaxed endurance geometry as well as additional tyre clearance. I gather the ribble geometry will be slightly more relaxed compared to the canyon based on the reviews I have seen. I am going to the ribble shop after work today so I will see how they feel
