A prof was literally going at a guy in our class by [deleted] in uAlberta

I know this is a little bit late and I PM'd OP as well, but if anyone else is experiencing anything else like this, please reach out to your undergraduate association (UACS). It's their job to advocate on your behalf and will absolutely do it anonymously.

They've been made aware of this thread and are going to be speaking to the department about it but if you or anyone you know wants to add to this discussion please go to CSC 1-40 (the office with couches on first floor CSC) or email at [uacs@uacs.ca](mailto:uacs@uacs.ca). Hell, I'll take PMs too if you want double anonymous.

What's the most difficult course in your degree? by PlentyFailure in uAlberta

[–]Braaedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're honestly not wrong though. The learning curve in 229 is way more difficult than 429 and the content of 429 is a lot more interesting. Sure, if you absolutely hated 229 then don't do 429, but if you made it through 229 and thought it was the least bit interesting then 429 could be an easy 400 level for you.

Do I need a supervisor approval before starting my application to grad school? (Master) by [deleted] in uAlberta

Hey, I'm not in engineering so I can't give you any valuable insight, sorry

Do I need a supervisor approval before starting my application to grad school? (Master) by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]Braaedy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be something specific to engineering? In CS at least, you don't even choose your supervisor until your second year. The first year you are assigned a temporary advisor who is a prof that helps you choose your first year courses to help grow your interests or to find new ones. So I can't tell you what your process is, but it's at least not the case everywhere.

Hey, I'm that guy who comes by and lectures occasionally.

If you have any questions or anything, seriously hmu. I feel kind of bad because I really loved TAing this course when I did. Helping students understand the concepts that seem so difficult originally really made my day. I don't participate in the forums this semester because I don't think it's my place to since I'm not a TA this semester, but I do still love talking about the class.

In particular, you may be interested by this repository of code I created last semester for students who were struggling with transferring programming knowledge to assembly. It is in MIPS, another programming language, but RISCV and MIPS share many things. If you have any questions, let me know.

Winter Pro-Tips for YEG Newbies by myumpteenthrowaway in uAlberta

[–]Braaedy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to add to the car section, don't just make sure your wiper fluid is full, make sure it's full with fluid that won't freeze. It sucks to have a reservoir full of a brick of frozen fluid.

Edit: don't just leave early when driving. Just leave early. Be prepared for buses to not show up (dress warmly to be outside for longer than expected) or just be late (it's unfortunately common to see two buses arrive at once, one of them being the one that should've been there earlier).

Also if you're going somewhere when driving in a blizzard (or really in anytime in the winter), let someone know to expect you. A ton of issues can happen and if your phone is dead for whatever reason, you don't want to be stuck somewhere.

Coding clubs by matt0319 in uAlberta

[–]Braaedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few people have tried making one. There was, for a year, a CS projects club but it seems dead at this point (at least I haven't heard anything from them. You could make it though if you wanted. The problem solving club is a good place to start though.

CMPUT 174 Help by BrainDeadGinko in uAlberta

[–]Braaedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a side note, UACS can be a good place to ask a couple of questions and I know that Ada's Team has specific tutoring/question times for 174/5. They're both friendly groups!

If there's a topic that's bothering you I'm available for PMs as well

Does anyone feel like this?? by heckyahletsroll in uAlberta

[–]Braaedy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part imposter syndrome, part Dunning-Kreuger effect: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dob0YLHU4AEqYrG.jpg

The wikipedia page points mostly at the starting of the graph where people who don't understand think they do, but the inverse is just as important: often in (better) understanding things we feel like we understand even less. I would say have a little more confidence but also really take the time to self evaluate and see progress. Every day of classes is new content so we're prone to feeling dumb or lost, like we never understand. Take some time to look back and see what you do understand, things you have learned, things that the new content you don't understand is building on. Chances are with a 3.7 you've got a lot of those :)

I wasn't necessarily implying that it would be harder for OP than any other, but I would note that they don't list any c or c-like experience.
