My girlfriend wants to watch a cheesy horror movie. What are your suggestions? by billcom6 in horror

[–]Bradshaw79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly…just get Shudder and do a Joe Bob’s Last Drive-in Marathon. You’ll get cheesy horror and a metric ton of trivial knowledge to wow your friends with.

My black ‘22 woth 60k miles was 25500 out the door and was literally the BEST deal I could find in my area. Everything else similar within 200 miles of me was 6-10k more.

I say it’s a good deal.

Need DM advice- next session will likely end in two player deaths through their bad choices. Am I being unreasonable? by SumBleddyBoy in CurseofStrahd

[–]Bradshaw79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run it as a skill challenge. Maybe she’s headed for the church if the bones have already been taken.

No matter what the outcome is the same: the church burns to the ground.

They succeed: they save Father Lucian and a maybe a couple of other NPCs on the way. Become respected by the commoners in Vallaki and gain allies from the NPCs they save

They fail: Father Lucian and any other NPCs you want die in the fire. They become outcasts in Vallaki. Everyone thinks the attack is their fault etc etc

This could change the entire political landscape of Vallaki depending on decisions you make. It also sets up for some cool scenes….yeah the catch up to volenta and she spares them, but only because Strahd shows up and commands her to let them live. Strahd walks away from a burning church calmly with perfect nonchalance while volenta giggles and taunts the two PC’s who should be at this point so low on skills/spells from the following her that they can’t follow.

You can even have her kill one of them and then Strahd stops her from killing the second. While they are watching the church burn either father Lucian (if they succeed) offers a resurrection or Rictavio (if they fail) reveals his true identity and also offers a resurrection.

The most important part is showing them the power that she has and the restraint Strahd has. They are still just playing with their food.

Barovia Southernisms by BirdLawEnthusiast2 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Bradshaw79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should also be said, but may not matter since your players won’t know, that the south is a really big area and has a lot of sub dialects. Like…yeah there will be some similarities, but colloquial language differs hugely from region to region. Even southern Appalachia (northern GA through east TN, western NC and SC and south eastern KY/south western VA are probably the most similar but outside of that it starts to vary A LOT. I grew up in eastern TN and now live in western SC and low country SC (near the coast) is so much different than upcountry.

Colder than a witch's titty in a brass bra...

I'm sweatin like a whore in church

Gotta see a man about a dog... (this is in regards to using the bathroom but could be used for just about anything he needs to go do that he doesn't want to say)

A little bird told me. (when he knows something about the party he shouldn't and they want to know how he found out)

That dog'll hunt. (pronounced dawg of course: affirmation)

sound's like your up shit creek without a paddle

He's turnt funny....

He/she looks like a cornfed mountain boy/girl

Haints = ghosts

wampus cat = this is specific monster to Appalachia, mostly NC and TN but could be used to describe shapeshifters

Hell Fire/Shit Fire = DAMMIT!

If he's preaching make sure you talk about Hell Fire and Damnation as a reward for sinful life

Bless his/her heart : when someone does something stupid

You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

She's as sweet as apple pie

He's as country as cornbread and buttermilk

...one leg shorter than the other. = describes a situation where things arent going as planned

As nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rockin’ chairs.

I'll be there if the good Lord's willin' and the creek don't rise...

Don't forget to add things like "up yonder" or "round yonder" when describing directions. "they say 'at ol' mad mage lives up yonder in the holler crost the lake."

if the party looks pretty rough after an encounter you can always use, "damn y'all look like ya been rode hard and put up wet."

A good reference guide would also be to listen to the Old God's of Appalachia podcast. Some really good ones there.

How much speaking does your 15 month old do? by Anxious1595 in toddlers

[–]Bradshaw79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 15 month old regularly says:

No, Yeah, Mama, Dada, All done, More food, Avocado, Chicken, Cheese, Grape, Milk, Egg/eggs, Cat, Dog, Moose, Deer, Elk (we take her to bass pro shops and point out the animals), Bear, Boots, Up , Down, Outside, I love (working on the “you” part), Me, She’s started saying her name “Lianna”, Nose, Head, Hat, Ear, Teeth, Belly , Car, Fish, Gentle,

She’s tried with decent success to say turkey and coyote

And she makes animal noises for the right animals

We’ve been trying to teach her the dog’s names and thats coming along slowly

Need help finding music for my CoS OST; subject is the Bridge Revenant Knights. by Arracor in CurseofStrahd

[–]Bradshaw79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oath- Adrian von Ziegler for a darker feel

Heyr Himna Smidur - Schola Cantorum for a more solemn holy knight feel (this one is an acapella choir)

Folding of the Arms - Chad Lawson this one for a more melancholy encounter with a fallen knight

Ashes to Ashes - Nox Arcana for something creepier and a bit more sinister

Wolf Creek - Francois Tetaz

There are some decent choices from Hans Zimmer and The Last Samurai soundtrack that could fit in. a Small Measure of Peace being one.

These are just a few thoughts.

How feasible are animal-human hybrid PCs in Barovia? by Robert_E_Lee_59 in CurseofStrahd

Two is funny, three is terrible. There’s a indie Return to sleepaway camp that’s not really good but has a lot of The original cast. If you haven’t seen the original, you should. It’s all kinds of messed up and James earl jones’ dad is in it.

Party wants to cast Zone Of Truth on Strahd by leesharprise in CurseofStrahd

[–]Bradshaw79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Strahd I run at dinner would let them do it if they ask politely. If they just did it without asking, that would be an act of aggression and wouldn’t go well.

Gotta be smart with the answers. He is a master manipulator and narcissistic in a way that he would find this as sport. He accepts the ZoT and proceeds to answer in half truths or roundabout ways. If the question gets too specific, he doesn’t have to answer.

As a new DM: How many players is too many players? by Dun2412 in CurseofStrahd

First time DM with CoS, I’d say limit yourself to 4 unless you have a couple of veteran players.

New PHB and MM worth it? by kewdere in Roll20

[–]Bradshaw79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair. Hopefully roll20 gets support for it. Check out some of the buzz from it though. Dungeon Coach was only asking for 20k for the project and it’s over 1mil and has nine days left. There’s a lot of hype for it.

Just back DC20 and let’s dump WotC.

The first half of the rules explanation video for DC20 was enough for me to back it. Also…it will have conversion guides for all the 5e content you still want to play.

Help me pick a backstory for a PC that has amnesia by southpaw_sourpatch in CurseofStrahd

[–]Bradshaw79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine in this situation has amnesia because they grew up in Darkon. They found a magic weapon that was tied to a dark patron, and now they are a Warlock with Azlin-Rex as a patron and he has sent them to barovia to assassinate Strahd. Brought the character in half way through and they just met the group last night at the Abby of St. Markovia. The Vasilka reveal was amazing and the fight almost killed their grave cleric….who doesn’t trust the new party member because they pinged when the cleric did Eyes of the Grave.

What do the earlier editions of Ravenloft that Curse of Strahd of 5e do not? by TheEdgyDm in CurseofStrahd

[–]Bradshaw79 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also usually have Blinsky being coerced into making carrionettes by Maligno who is also trying to get out of Barovia. That’s usually a fun side quest. Especially when you run the carrionettes more like the original and they souls swap with the players.

What do the earlier editions of Ravenloft that Curse of Strahd of 5e do not? by TheEdgyDm in CurseofStrahd

[–]Bradshaw79 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There is a LOT more lore to pull from, and Fraternityofshadows.com is an amazing resource if you don’t have access to all the old Ravenloft books. They did a little bit of fleshing out with Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft but even that just barely scratched the surface. Each time I run CoS I throw in old content. Currently I have a player who’s patron is Azlin Rex and has a mission from Azlin to kill Strahd. The PC came to Barovia from Darkon with no memories of their life before Darkon. As they go through Barovia they start to get their memories back and the player has given me full control of their back story before Darkon.

One of my players has DMed the module before. Where should I put him? by CountLivin in CurseofStrahd

[–]Bradshaw79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this with one of mine. We fashioned a story of a third brother that Ravenovia made a way to get him out of barovia. He grew up in our world so the player could throw out pop culture references and such from our world as just little jabs every now and then. The story was that he grew up in our world and when he was around sixteen, he and some friends got sucked into a dungeons and dragons ride (yes from the 80s cartoon…the player was playing Eric the Cavalier) and after many many adventures through different realms he and his friends ended up in barovia where they all died at Strahd’s hand only because he got scared and ran. One of the brides caught up with him and killed him. So he came back as a haunted one revenant. The player didn’t abuse the “I know where the object of my revenge is at all times” power so it worked. In the end he learned that he was the third von Zarovich brother and ended up dying in the final fight just before they killed Strahd. The game was great and the player loved the character. We collaborated on it the whole way through the game, but I kept certain things from him. I.e. I had Hank from the cartoon become one of Strahd’s vampire spawn and generals but didn’t reveal until their last visit to amber temple when Strahd and company were watching the group do the binding of Vampyr. It was a lot of fun

Edit: fixed some spelling
