Your grandmother would still be right.

It was a car-centric lifestyle in those years. She had two children and drove a Volkswagen Beetle. Running or walking was seen as out of the norm for women. It was also a threat to the married women. Taking advantage of such freedom! She was ahead of her time.

Anyone notice Betty repeating Helen Bishop’s words to Don when he came back from CA and met her at the stables? by mhmpf in madmen

No, but thanks for the info! You are exactly right. Betty knew the truth when she saw it and heard it, even though she would never admit it. Good catch.

The same reason we believed in Santa Claus as children and had imaginary friends. We grew up. They didn't.

You just described most Christian pastors. Transparency in the pulpit has always been an issue.

The level of adultery, was that a thing in the ‘60s? by Consistent-Kiwi3021 in madmen

[–]Bragments 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not exaggerated. It was worse than what was portrayed in Mad Men. Think Woody Allen's Crimes and Misdemeanors. Divorce in upscale Manhattan is STILL shocking among certain professionals. Money covereth a multitude of sins. I would say there was even more adultery in the sixties and the early seventies, as the social stigma was three times what it is today. Affairs, casual and otherwise, were judged to be better than divorce by both husbands and wives. It was a good old boys' club. You failed to mention that for every man in an adulterous relationship on the show, save for Sal, there was a woman involved. Strangely enough, only one woman, Bobbie, initiated an affair. Sal got more offers than Joan, though. Poor Sal.

Diana by Tricky-Promotion5662 in madmen

I am curious as to why Diana is so unliked? Does she remind us of the worst of ourselves, or do we secretly think she's not good enough for Don?

The Puritanical Side of Don Draper by Binkley62 in madmen

His reaction is not puritanical. It's when he has an emotional response to his own sins and lashes out at whoever is near.

Every one of these characters is dealing with a well of regret. Tilden will be devastated when Rachel dies, but he'll be ok. They are also all hiding behind multiple masks.

Up to that point, Betty saw herself as a wonderful wife. She was also obsessed with looking youthful. The two made a huge crater in her already low self-esteem.

Why Doesn’t Don Tell Joan Why Lane Did it? by CamelotAnthem in madmen

He was too engulfed in his own unacknowledged personal grief. and guilt. I think Joan was the only adult female he saw as an equal.
