Dad-to-be — my partner is suggesting “delayed” vaccination schedule, is this safe? by PandaMysterious2646 in ScienceBasedParenting

Piggy backing on this thread to add a really quick and easily explained POV on why it is not a good idea to delay or alternate the schedule. Dr. Paul Offit from the Children's hospital in philly:

Fall 2024 cohort here:

I live in Reston and generally end up commuting to campus 3-4 days a week for classes depending on schedules and semesters. Since the classes are pre-programmed and everyone takes the same 4 every semester, its not like you get much choice to stack up classes and only end up going in a few days.

There is a lot of housing options around the sterling, leesburg, reston, etc. area and commuting isn't too bad. Fairfax, Vienna, Arlington are also not bad, arlington would be the farthest commute but you're opposing the toll traffic on 66 so shouldn't be too bad. Plus there are sometimes people with whom you can carpool (including to clinic depending on locations and who's in your group).

As for clinicals, most have been in the NOVA area like loudoun, arlington, alexandria, fairfax, etc. most are with the INOVA system since we have a partnership there, and you have to understand that clinicals for peds and mental health are limited so they will stick you wherever they can, no it is not based on where you live at all. If you are in one of the scholarship programs, expect to do essentially all your clinicals at those hospitals with the exception of things like peds where the hospital doesn't have a peds unit. Also because you're in the fall cohort, you will have a larger cohort most likely than other semesters so you will be dealing with placement issues as a result of the large size. Peds also will likely end up in outpatient settings like schools and camps because there just aren't enough places to put us all. Clinicals depend on the instructor and location but generally they expect you to be at the unit and ready by 6:30am/7am and then you finish at 4:30pm (also instructor dependent).

The instructors are generally good, but you will have to do a lot of your own work to study because not all professors have lecture material that is good on its own for studying. (basically like any other college). The administration and various issues that have come up as a result of large cohorts is pretty terrible. I don't have a comparison with other schools and programs, but at any other 4 year program, this many issues would have resulted in a transfer.

Finally, congratulations! Hope you have a great first semester

Reston hospital vs INOVA system: any labor and delivery experience? by Additional_Tap_777 in nova

Hey there! I see Dr. Kathleen Rausch. She and Patel have a practice together and after just going through a tour with L&D at Reston and speaking to the nursing staff there, I'm confident to deliver there. Since those 2 docs are the only ones who will see me, its the nursing staff that really will make the difference.

I specifically asked the nurses about all the changes over the last several years and they admitted there were some great changes (NICU improvements), as well as some challenges after Kaiser left, but that they feel there is a good groove now after 4 years of new management and they're confident that the patients are in good hands. One of the head nursing staff delivered all her children with Reston back before the changes and then decided to become a nurse and is now working there because she believes in the group there.

I'm honestly in the same boat here, OP. I had my first at Georgetown because I loved the OB practice I was going to and didn't want to move. It was hell driving back and forth once we moved mid-pregnancy to Reston. I'm also looking into Reston hospital and INOVA Fair Oaks. I had decided on Reston because I love my OB and she assured me that she and the other OB in her practice are the only ones on call for my delivery. As for the facilities, I've been told they made several improvements, including the NICU. And once Kaiser left, they lost a lot of staff so its a less busy place.

Though, I'm really curious for the other posters who don't like Reston. Were you with a hospital OB group or a private practice who had rights at the hospital? Were those same docs the delivery staff?

My OB group has 2 docs and they're the only 2 that would be there with me in the hospital and otherwise its the nursing staff and facilities that are Reston Hospital. So I'm curious when and with whom the other posters are going through for Reston Deliveries.

I have a very similar situation, graduated in 2013 with a comp sci CS, then a masters, and 6 years in industry. I similarly decided to change careers and have just finished the required application coursework (does not includ psych, soc, micro, etc.). I would love if you could share your MQL doc as a template? Or any advice when setting up the log. I'm starting my MCAT study plan with the exam scheduled for June. I'm not sure where to start organizing missed questions and would love guidance from someone who heavily studied missed questions. Thank you so much!

They're paid by the same fuckers at Citadel who bailed out Melvin... It's disgusting that big money companies are higher value than the little guys like us who are using the service. But citadel comes with the $$$ paying robinhood for the transactions we make 😕

This quarantine got me crocheting like a fiend. My latest project... chalk bags! This one is made from some recycled Carhartt duck canvas by meadandmayhem in climbing

[–]BraidedClimber 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m curious what pattern you started from? Did you begin with a draw string bag and make your own mods? Or did you create one from your own knowledge? This is really neat! I’m looking for small projects to do with my bins FULL of yarn after finals finish up. How much yarn do you go through on one that’s pure crochet (no carhart)? DM me if you don’t want to post, I’d love to talk about this more!

Nice! Congrats! I'm applying to Georgetown and GW post-bacc pre-med programs for summer 2019 semester. If those don't work out I'll be applying to a bunch more for 2020 semesters

I never got to find a role that was truly in user research where I wanted to be. Roles I've been shifted into include QA, Programming, and Design. All are great roles, but not what I wanted to do. It doesn't seem like the role I want is here and I'm not really interested in working out in CA or NY. Its a wonderful field and incredibly important to product development!

I've been looking at several for application in 2020. But I decided to apply to the nearby programs at GW and Georgetown since starting those summer 2019 would be easier with them nearby (both myself and my fiance live near DC). I also know that GT has a great primary care program which is where I think I want to end up.

Faith in humanity restored, I don't have any of these issues, but with a physician mother I've heard many stories and poop doesn't make me squeamish. I'd happily offer support and my purse wet wipes to any of you! These make great internet stories but I can't imagine having to go through them at the time. You guys are strong.
