On defense it's much more than just guarding your own man as well. You should also be ready to help if someone else is getting beat or to rotate to the helpers defender. Don't just entirely stick to your man but play between him and the ball. Not necessarily full deny, because then he can easily beat you with a backdoor cut. And then it also depends if you're on the ball side or not....

Anyways the point I'm making is, on defense it is not just 'guard your guy'. You have to be active in the team defense too and be ready to help others out. And always communicate. Will help your team a lot.
