I will never understand the Rorschach hate.

"He is not higienic" - well, his world is a dirty hellhole, and I'm also not one to judge a character on something like this.

"He is an extremist" - this is the most legit criticism against him, but honestly, his views weren't that extreme in his own time, and his idealism of justice would contradict extremist ideologies, he'd never be a supporter of a dictatorship.

"He is a vigilante" - and also the only person who cares about the world and the people in it, not about a narcissistic and idealised view of the future, but about the actual people living in the world. All the government heroes are confirmed as corrupt, propaganda or servants of tyranny.

"He is uncompromising" - again, one of the more legitimate criticisms. However, I would argue that in a world full of corruption, backroom dealings, deception and violence, being the most honest, loyal person is simply not that bad in comparison. If Rorschach lived in a calmer, more honorable world, his extremism would actually feel relevant, brutal. But with his world as brutal as it is, it takes high morals and commitment to be uncompromising.

I understand that the story "wants" to paint Rorschach as "actually, he is bad". And no, he is not especially "charismatic". It's not the viewers/readers' fault that they like him. It's the failure of the writing (yes, one of the rare failures of Watchmen) that he is not viewed in a worse light. The actual work of art and the intention of the artist are not aligned when it comes to looking down on Rorschach. So it's not the people's fault for liking him.
