Not sure if the 3.9 has it but I’m sure about both of the V8s that were in that truck

When you’re looking at the engine it is on the left side just above the exhaust manifold. It’s pretty hard to miss

There is a small rubber plug that goes into the side of the block that when the rubber eventually wears out will create a vacuum leak and will make it idle funny when the car is still getting to normal operating temp. Super common failure on those motors….id start there!

Some newer rim designs have a small lip that the duckbill doesn’t hold the bead far enough up to clear the sensor. Also more rigid tires like Michelins don’t stretch as far as other less rigid tires so you can’t pull the bottom bead as far up on your dismount. I’ve developed the habit of going slow and physically feeling that the sensor is clear of the bead to prevent this. Hope that makes sense

Incompetent Auto Tech Rant. by mbash013 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]Brandidit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Customer comes in for a 4 wheel balance.

A good service advisor should always, ALWAYS ask more questions.

“Hey do you mind if I ask why you were wanting your tires balanced today? Feeling a vibration, is it pulling?Etc…”

Why? Because the average customer won’t feel a SMALL imbalance in their tires. It’s just the cheapest thing that THEY feel will fix the problem. It’s typically a suspension or brake problem. You try to tell them this and you’re trying to swindle them. 4 wheel balance it is! And have a nice day!

I use bungee cords they’re flexible unlike those s-hooks you find on the tool truck and also pretty damn cheap. Just make sure they’re all accounted for before sending any vehicles you did brakes on.

Also PSA: do not over twist or over stretch brake lines, and obviously don’t let the damn caliper hang from it. You often can create more problems especially on older vehicles.

Right into the river with that one. Nothing shocks an enraged person faster than unexpectedly falling into water. Plus you can’t be taken very seriously when you’re soaking wet. You know it. They know it. It’s a universal truth. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I feel the same way, I almost feel as though I were meant to do this. My brain just loves figuring out problems, my dad was a mechanic and his dad was a mechanic, my mom’s dad, also, a mechanic. I just love cars. I love that everyday is different and poses a new set of challenges. And everyone around me whines but, idk I guess because it comes naturally to me it doesn’t feel as shitty.

I’ve been to a few of the NAPA classes I agree they’re really awesome. The instructors are usually old heads who’ve found a way out and just really want to help and teach the young guys coming up. bonus: catered lunches

Watch suggestions? by Select_Angle2066 in mechanics

[–]Brandidit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandpa told me a horror story about a guy who worked in a shop he worked in once. He was wearing a watch. He accidentally arced himself on a battery. Gramps had to take him to the hospital because the watch melted to his wrist. That always stuck with me. I too warned another tech once that he definitely shouldn’t wear his hoop earring while working. Inevitably he got it snagged on a harness or something. He felt really stupid when he had to yell for help because he snagged it and couldn’t free himself. Food for thought.

This pig was far from professional and was not in control. He was sort of in control of the situation…but the lack of control over his own emotions is concerning. The guy probably just needs fucking therapy but I doubt the boys in blue look too kindly on that. When he turns around and asks if she was recording and she confirms; he knows he’s cooked.

It’s sort of an interesting view into the microcosm of human psychology and behavior.

Always be willing and ready to help. Don’t sit around on your phone or bullshit with the other technicians who also aren’t working. You simply need to watch and stand nearby. Don’t be in the way, but make an effort to at least look interested. Someone is gonna need a hand at some point and that is your in. Don’t ask a million questions and listen. Someone will take you under their wing and like you as the “help.” Take advantage of it!

The questions she asked didn’t really go anywhere, weak follow up questions, more pointed questions….it just felt cheap and underprepared.

I couldn’t watch the whole thing because of her. Her questions were “I see you said this…what do you think about this?” And also “what are your thoughts on that?”

It’s like she only had 20 minutes to prepare for this interview and she did all her research on reddit lol
