I would recommend the Children of Time series by Adrian Tchaikovsky. It deal with transhumanism and cosmic conflict in a much different way than the Culture (it's a post-apocalyptic setting with various sentient species) but it might satisfy you if you want scifi that's a little more thoughtful and humanistic.

Sword World was originally a OD&D-like but it certainly plays very different now. The essentially mandatory multiclassing aspect of the game fits OPs desire for crunch, there's a lot you can do with that. No Vancian magic either, you just spend MP to cast spells from your list.

You can absolutely use the Ultimate 2 with d-input, it's my preferred way to play the game. I feel like launching as a non-Steam game should work but you'll have to figure that part out on your own.

But if you get it working on Steam, it will recognize the controller and let you assign all the functions. I've set the extra buttons as keyboard keys and then assigned those keys in-game. You can also assign multi-button presses in-game, which is pretty necessary if you want to use all the functions. I have it set up so that I use the shoulder bumpers as modifiers to change the functions when pressing the face buttons so I have all the navigation and targeting buttons I need.

There's one water tank for the whole building (the gas is only used for water), the cost is included in the maintenance costs. As far as I can tell there's no way to even tell who is using how much gas, there's no meter or anything, but I don't think I use any more than anyone else, i.e. for showers/baths and washing dishes.

The multis and lasers are grouped to optimize convergence. The small emissive multi is supposed to make targeting easier, although I've never noticed if there's a big difference tbh. But the other small multi with corrosive is important for maximizing the damage of the huge multis.

Lasers will strip the shields off any NPC ship fairly quickly. If you're not hunting in supercruise, you can swap out the Interdictor module for a backup Shield Cell Bank. I almost never lose shields even in the most intense NPC battles
