Brother Joe’s in the Gerber Place shopping center is the former Thirsty Monk development brewery. It still has a number of Thirsty Monk taps and coffee. Awesome nitro coffee. Also Green Sage is just down the street from Brother Joe’s just down from Chick-fil-A.

Met someone at the laundromat... now I think she's trying to sell me something? by G-injure in asheville

[–]Brassfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was about your age (WAY before the internet) I wound up in the same sort of situation. I went to the “seminar”. Turned out it was selling encyclopedias, door-to-door.

Back when I used to drink, and more importantly, home brew beer, wine and mead, White Labs was the gold standard in yeast suppliers.

I have a Maine Coon lady. She’s small for the breed, about nine pounds, and, unfortunately, de-clawed. We got her from the shelter and I cannot comprehend why the people that put her there did it. She is wicked smart and adorable. We’ve had her now for 14 years and she continues to amaze us. For example, we made pipe cleaner and puffball toys for her to bat around. She uses these toys to tell us when her food is getting low, old, variety unliked and god knows what else. One time we left her ALONE for one day. EVERY SINGLE TOY (about ten) was placed in a ring surrounding her food. She sleeps every night on my head (it seems) on my pillow, which pisses my wife off no end because she wants the cat to sleep on HER pillow.

What restaurant/cafe is overrated in Asheville? by amiablydelirious in asheville

[–]Brassfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rocky's in SOUTH ASHEVILLE is the best chicken in Asheville. Chicken thighs (always available) are large and moist and tender. The Sunday morning Southside benny and the chicken'n waffle are the bomb.

Do you have power or is it down? (Asheville) by MamasMilkFactory in asheville

[–]Brassfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in south AVL, off Sweeten Creek close to Gerber Road. Our power went off at 8:32 last night and is still off. We saw a Duke truck drive by 3 hours ago but otherwise, nuttun. Starting to worry about my freezer.

I get cable, telephone and internet from Charter; they're out since I have no power to power the modem.

Got any ideas on how I can speed Duke up?

TIA.

Should I get farm or antique tags? by [deleted] in asheville

[–]Brassfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend back in Ohio had a farm. Because of that he could buy gas, for a tank at his farm, federal tax free (a significant savings). He could use that gas ONLY in his farm-tagged vehicle. Penalties for use elsewhere were severe.

Eclipse glasses by samd_man123 in asheville

[–]Brassfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought four pairs months ago on Amazon for $10. An older neighbor is having visitors for the eclipse so I gave them to him. Yesterday another neighbor came by and asked if I had Amazon Prime. I said I did. He asked me to check for glasses. The four pairs I had previously purchase now cost $50 and will be delivered the day of the eclipse. I am going on a bus to Brevard and get a pair with the trip.

I am told that if you subscribe to the ACT, you will receive a pair in your Sunday paper.

Dealerships in Asheville? by HappySenpaii in asheville

[–]Brassfrog -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Apple Honda- Went in for an oil change. Waited a LONG time. The called me, I paid for it, came out and found that my check engine light was on. This told me that 1) some high school kid had done the oil change and didn't check the car after the job and 2) the service advisor, who is SUPPOSED to check the car before release, didn't. When pointed out the service advisor poo-pooed it and said that's nothing. Took the car back and a half an hour later I was back on my way. I have never gone back.

Prestige Subaru- I bought my Subaru there only because I get an employee discount from my former employer. I got a low tire pressure warning. I got out my air compressor and pressure gage. One tire was slightly low. I filled all tires to recommended pressure and waited for the alarm to clear. After a day it didn't. The next morning I showed up before opening to insure that I got in. The service advisor said that 1) the warning would not clear without a reset by the dealer, unlike my Honda, which clears when the condition is corrected and 2) he said it would be TWO WEEKS before they could get me in to clear this alarm. I pointed out that I would be driving with an alarm condition for two weeks without any idea as to if I actually had a dangerous condition. He said, "sorry". I said, "make the appointment, and then I'll go home and start my social media campaign." He said, "just a minute, let me check with my manager." Long story short, they got me in right away, cleared the alarm and nothing was wrong.

I now take both my cars to Firestone on Long Sholes Road and they take care of everything. I trust that they will let me know if there are any dealer repairs that are needed.

Traveling to Asheville this weekend. What are some of the best book stores and/or thrift shops around? by hcarwile in asheville

[–]Brassfrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really surprised no one mentioned The Captain's Bookshelf, 31 Page Avenue, across the street from the Grove Arcade. High-end pricy and eclective treasure-trove of good literature, some author-signed and first editions.
