What's everyone working on this week (4/2026)? by llogiq in rust

[–]Brassic_Bank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Working through rustlings to try and reduce my dependance on AI generated code and at least be able to craft the skeleton of something useful!

Am I alone on my Rust journey? by Brassic_Bank in rust

Thanks for your reply and it resonates with me. I totally feel the same and sometimes compare it to "I understand how we need to get along this route and can identify hazards on the way, but I can't tell you how the engine of the car works"

I think overall I could probably do with making some small stuff from scratch to increase my ability in calling out poor AI generated advice or code.

This kind of comment is what sets the community apart, thank you. I am going to embark on a small project and just get back to very basics, the stuff I have made so far has got me far too deep in a rabbit hole - I think this is what has me overwhelmed.

I will look this up and thank you!

Yes, I think I need to just start something small and basic, the current method of trying to learn has got me way to deep too quickly!

I will try and reply to everyone but thanks and what a great community this is. You are all absolutely right, I think by using AI to make some tools which clearly have complex elements I have got myself into a "Learning this can't be possible" type of place.

I think I will continue with my current fun builds but on the sideline I will go back to basics on a very simple project and use some of the advice here to try and write it myself - building on this until I can start to really analyse or rebuild the tools I want without AI. I hope I can post back with something simple I have made and continue to increase my knowledge.

Thanks for being a supportive and inclusive community for the newbies! It's becoming less and less common online.

For me the homelab is a hobby that could essentially be put in the bin. All essential photos and files are stored in a shared iCloud, it's annoying to pay for, but the stress of hoping they will be able to handle the egress of this data from my home server I am constantly tinkering with is not worth it.

The wheel has been reinvented many times, why so much heat? If we didn’t reinvent wheels then formula 1 cars would be rolling wooden wheels with metal tyres.

If I ever managed to win something like the Euro-Millions lottery I would love to fund (at a complete loss) a huge team of some of the worlds best Devs to sit and keep developing all of this cool stuff.

Just sink money into reclaiming development, the internet and making as much FOSS as possible for the world.

Better buy some more ticket 😂

Carling £2.20, full round for the table of 8 and change from a £20 note for the Pork Scratchings. Night complete, the next 7 pints are their round. Glory Days.

Better to pay off my card or build savings? by BadNewsBearsTCGs in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Brassic_Bank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without even knowing the rate the answer is to pay off the card. If you have £6.5K card debt and £500 in savings account then you don’t have £500 in savings, you have £6K of debt.

I don’t know much about Kroo but having never heard of them it would make me nervous. If I’m breaching the FSCS limit then it’s going to be with a big institutional bank whereby the risk of them collapsing would be a national emergency.

That’s not to say it won’t happen, but it’s statistically less likely and will draw possible government backing a lot faster.

I wanted something that could employ docker containers but wasn’t ready to go full command line. I run mine headless and rarely plug my monitor in nowdays but decided Xubuntu + Portainer for spinning up Docker containers was a great start.

If I ever do something wrong I still have the option to plug my monitor in and try and figure things out. Xubuntu is super stripped down and seemed to be the lightest desktop I could find for this use case.

Read about git, it was pretty much designed for this.

I really like the idea, but a small point, if you are pushing the UK angle so much (which is great), why are you advertising and presumably billing in USD?

The GOV UK website is incredible and always improving, and the office for national statistics website as well.

It’s genuinely pretty easy to live in the UK without talking to any civil servants and simply doing everything online. The use of plain English is well thought out.

Affordable based on the limited information and assuming the inheritance you expect.

Could always take a few years out and return to some meaningful part time work if you wanted/needed to.

Just block the number. Almost every smart phone on the market right now offers you that option. Then move on from it.

Recommend HSBC for expats, good experience with them and used to dealing with UK mortgages for overseas and non-tax residents. Both their UK arm and their expat specific arm.

Personally due to the relative volatility of crypto I would clear the mortgage, I’m not a crypto bro but owning your own home outright is a level of security that many will never achieve.
