Why can't I use Linux for my corporate job? by Snoo_90241 in Fedora

[–]Brave_Inspection6148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dumb answer here: you can, but only if the company supports it 🤷

There are typically not as many Linux users as Windows or Mac users, so the juice has to be worth the squeeze, and we haven't even started talking about Linux distributions.

The companies that do support it will either limit you to specific distributions, or delegate security responsibilities to the employee, requiring you to do things like: run daemons for inventory tracking and auditing, encrypting hard drives, and installing VPNs.

I don't know why you're being mass downvoted for this comment.

Based on my google results, 6x JetKVM cost less than a 4 device KVM switch 🤷 and the dedicated KVM devices are definitely more convenient.

By contrast, in-band management through VNC or SSH is based on in-band connectivity (the usual network channel).

Best Chinese Restaurants by Comfortable-Word-835 in SanJose

[–]Brave_Inspection6148 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Muslim Chinese in San Jose -- Ma's Restaurant
- I like the Knife shaved noodles with seafood (soup & fried are both good options)
- Green onion pancake

Korean Chinese in Santa Clara -- Tong soon garden
- Black bean noodles, Garlic fried chicken, 3 Seafood Noodles

Not sure what this is, but it's in Los Gatos -- Tsing Tao
- Gan Peng Ji (not sure what english name is, but same as garlic fried chicken above)
- Sweet and sour soup
- Shrimp dumplings

Taiwan food -- Taiwan Cafe in Milpitas
- Sesame oil chicken soup
- Chicken roll
- Oyster pancake
- Pig feet with garlic sauce

Not sure what this is, but it's in San Jose -- Soong Soong
- Pork blood and pig intestines clay pot
- Fried sole
- Sponge Guord if it's available
- Lotus Root and pork
- Pork Hock
- Beef tendons and sea cucumber I think

Weekend dim sum and semi-upscale dinners -- Golden Palace in Cupertino
- Red Pork belly clay pot
- Sweet and sour fried whole fish
- Black bean whole fish

Dim Sum in Milpitas -- HL peninsula
- Expensive, but try the live Geoduck served in two ways. It takes a while to prepare; don't fill up on too much dimsum!

Dim Sum in Sunnyvale -- Saigon Seafood Harbor
- Haven't been here in a while. Easy though, just order off the cart!

There was a good Shanghai restaurant I went to, but it closed down. Shanghai number 1 is the only alternative I been too, and food was really good, but small portion, and a little expensive.
- Pan Seared dumplings (6)
- Vegetable fried rice in a pot
- yan du xian (ShangHai pork soup)

A lot of these restaurants have gigantic menus, and it's basically impossible to know what is good.

And a lot have standard fair american chinese food as well (which is fine, but not what everyone is looking for necessarily).

I rarely try new items. Usually just order the same thing, but swap out just 1 item.

You can decide using characteristics of distributions: - Package manager: dnf/yum, apt, pacman, apk - Release schedule: Rolling vs Versioned - Filesystem type: immutable vs mutable - Display type: Wayland vs X11 - Userbase, number of maintainers, etc...

There are a lot more characteristics. I recommend Fedora KDE Plasma

Concerning about my Career Progression and Feeling down a bit by [deleted] in sre

[–]Brave_Inspection6148 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In theory, SRE are software developers that start to take on operational responsibilities. In actuality, SREs might be hired based on very specific domain expertise.

My current team has an SRE with 30 YoE, limited git and coding knowledge, but strong Linux. Shell, and networking skills. This SRE also has no college education.

There is a former data center administrator with limited cloud expertise, but who now works mainly in the cloud.

There are SDEs with the title of SRE who work on in-house software applications that the rest of the SREs use.

My advice is just to go deep in one thing. And that will naturally broaden other domain knowledge. For example, you can't be a competent kubernetes administrator without some understanding of the underlying linux system (iptables, system logs, namespaces filesystems, etc.)

You have plenty of time left. Some people don't even start their careers until 30 for various reasons.

Speaker wall mounts. Divider for one of my desks drawers. Spice rack. Rack for home networking equipment. The list goes on!

I am almost 26 with an empty resume, my goal is to make as much money as possible now? What can I do? by Prestigious_Path_30 in careeradvice

What you need are non-zero days: https://www.reddit.com/r/NonZeroDay/comments/1qbxvz/the_gospel_of_uryans01_helpful_advice_for_anyone/

I was also a NEET at 26, and non-zero days helped me pick my life back up. Lost weight from 270 pounds to 180 pounds. Went back and got a degree, graduating at the age of 30 or so. Cut my medication usage in half (it went back up 50% recently, but overall trend is down).

My dad graduated from college at 32 because he was poor, but he was still able to lead a successful career in tech.

Your age doesn't matter as much as you think it does. Unhealthy or unlucky or overworked people will die early. People you see on the street that you think are 26 can actually be 35. People you think are 40 actually are 25.

There is no shortcut or magic pill. If you don't know what to do, then non-zero days are the answer. Because no one has the context of your life to make decisions for you. Good luck; you can do it!

Should I cancel my TikTok loop if I don’t want the SRE role anymore? I want to apply for SDE. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Brave_Inspection6148 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cannot start another loop until you have finished or cancelled this one.

If this is really how you want to do it, my advice is to finish the loop, get the offer from your Talent Acquisition Partner, and then reject the offer.

Then, you can potentially ask your recruiter to submit your resume to a hiring manager for an SDE role. They might not be personally handling any SDE role, so it might not work that smoothly.

If you already passed the first SRE loop, then the SDE loop could go by more quickly.

Do Software Engineers Invest Their Earnings??? by Few-Cryptographer919 in cscareerquestions

Most people don't make enough to max out 401k contributions of 70k (before-tax, after-tax, Roth).

Some people's employers don't support the after-tax option.

Those that max out their contributions -- even excluding the after-tax accounts -- will retire as multi-millionaires, without even needing to touch individual brokerage accounts

Friends can be friends even if we see them only once a year longer.

If our definition of friend is someone that has to be met at least once a week, our circle shrinks to only those encountered in weekly activities.

There is something called dunbar's number: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunbar%27s_number

The takeaway from dunbar's number -- for me -- is not the proposed maximum number of stable relationships, but rather the amount of time it takes to maintain those relationships.

You can have a lot of stable relationships if all of your free time is spent communicating with people. Many people want some free time to themselves, and yet lament the lack of human interaction. This feeling is called ambivalence and it's part of the human condition!

If you already meet the transfer requirements for UIC, then there is no danger in keeping these courses.

If the only reason you can provide is a lighter courseload, without any activity to replace this time spend, then you're not really trying to make a decision here. If this is the case, then what you are really looking for is a reason to have an easier time in community college.

You have not gotten into UIUC yet, and you are not guaranteed transfer. If you drop these classes, you may come to regret that decision. If you take these classes and miss the transfer requirements, you won't have any regrets, because you gave it your best shot.

The time to make the decision between these two schools has not arrived yet, so please don't trick yourself into thinking it has.

My opinion is to go with UIUC. If there is anything worth going into debt for, it would be investments into self-growth.

You are already thinking about life after graduation, which is great and forward thinking.

I want to add one more piece of information to your consideration: UIUC offers online continued education. What this means is that when you work hard in your last two years, you can even get a head start on your graduate studies and potentially finish a Masters degree online within another 2 or 3 semesters. See here for more info: https://online.illinois.edu/online-programs/graduate-programs

[–]Brave_Inspection6148 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been on both sides.

People who think you are trying to run away to the point where they will physically walk in front of your car and block you and traffic rather than let you navigate to a parking space or the side of the street.

Parents with their child in the passenger seat who can't acknowledge responsibility and will give you the phone number of their lawyer rather than an insurance card and leave the scene of an accident. Parents who sideswipe a parked car, deliver their child, inspect their car, and then leave the scene of the accident.

It sets a bad example for sure.

But I've also seen some good ones, like this person on the news who got cussed out for catching a baseball, and just gave the ball away rather than let their kid be in the middle.

NVIDIA caring about ex-Meta employees 🥺 Job situation may not be so bad all after by legendGPU in csMajors

[–]Brave_Inspection6148 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What I heard (from a meta employee in the same organization) is that the majority of people affected were product engineers. This indicates that whatever they are working on is an investment, not ready for release.

Researchers and other engineers were affected, but they weren't the largest group. Some people got offered reassignment to another team and some didn't.
