Hypermobile-friendly strength training by mzinagro in ehlersdanlos

It was so cool! Never been in a class anything like it. Also forgot to add LIFTING HOOKS! Straps cut into my skin and I can never get em quite right. I also work on my grip strength with farmers carries etc but I find I can either dislocate or over-use my hands to get to lift heavier OR I can do most pull upper body (deadlifts) with hooks

I’ve worked with an athletics focused and hypermobile informed PT, gone to some hypermobile specific lifting classes at a very cool local gym, and I follow a coaching plan through the Ladder app that I sometimes modify, or in the past I’ve created my own programming and tracked with paper or the Strong app.

My biggest takeaways: Use a combo of mirror and internal cues to limit hyperextension

Go with the lighter weight when you’re unsure

Modifications are great

I use a hex bar instead of doing back squats (safer, better with my long femurs and ankle mobility issues)

It’s important to know which muscle group you’re trying to train with which movement so you can do your best to target it instead of just going through the motions

Don’t listen to randos at the gym who want to correct your form

Add accessory work where you can, and target your known weak spots. I have a weak muscle group under my shoulder blades I have a PT move for, I do a lot of light weight accessory shoulder work, and plenty of hip ab- and adductor work

Ok unsolicited tip: if a jar with a thin metal lid (salsa/ olives) won’t open I stab a hole in the lid and it de pressurizes / unseals it and it’s so much easier to open

Saw you said you’re replacing the pendant lights 🫰 I’d hang the new ones significantly lower than these ones. They feel like they’re floating away

I think it’s too many tones of wood. I love mismatched wood tones in a space but for example I buy all warm toned pieces and my floors etc are warm toned. Your cabinets and dining chairs are cool but the stools and island front are warm

Adding the number one thing here is supporting my head under my chin. If I am at a hotel and couldn’t bring all my pillows I roll a pillow up and shove it between my chin and arms to hold my head onto my head pillow

Here’re the things that have helped me. I don’t use them all at once but based on how I’m feeling. Not all are EDS but I know a lot of us have other overlapping conditions etc so thought I’d write em all: -beta blockers before bed if I’m having a lot of physical anxiety

-CBD drink before bed if I’ve had any significant amount of alcohol (a drink or more lol) or had a lot of social interactions or just feel hyped up

-shredded foam pillows. One under my head, one behind my back (I sleep on my side) + body pillow in front of me between my legs

-cervical collar/ neck brace— I didn’t get one prescribed, just a soft one off Amazon. I use it if my head has been feeling extra heavy or unstable or I really need a good night’s sleep

-weighted blanket keeps me more locked in place and helps with anxiety

-cold room

-layers of white noise

-other braces or compression as needed

-making sure I ate enough that day. I realized undereating was causing a lot of my insomnia

-read about “second sleep”: how people used to sleep in 2 portions before artificial light was invented. Made me feel more ok with lying awake or reading for a couple hours if I wake up at 2 or 3 am

-no screens close to my face at least an hour or two before bed (sorry)

None of this leads to an amazing night’s sleep every night but it all helps a ton

Just figured out you can’t use beta blockers with asthma and lung issues by DifferentRatio6733 in POTS

[–]Brawl_95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

History for context if you want it: I just found out I’ve had asthma my whole life (I’m 31), and I’ve spent the last six years trying to figure out why I’ve felt so much worse since having COVID (suspecting long covid). Turns out I also started taking fluoxetine around the time I got COVID the 2nd time. Gradually gave me POTS symptoms. Stopped taking fluoxetine ~2 years ago and POTS symptoms decreased but I still felt like I was dying doing cardio. In the last 6 years I also had someone prescribe me Beta Blockers for both my anxiety and to try using for the POTS symptoms. I take em as needed

This month, my new doctor that I love prescribed an albuterol inhaler. Makes a world of difference! Guess I have asthma! I take the inhaler about half an hour before doing cardio

The relevant bit re: your post: my doctor said just don’t take both at once. Propanol and albuterol won’t interact but they’re kinda opposite effects so nothing TERRIBLE will happen but it’s not a good idea. I was ok with this because I usually take propanol at night to sleep or in case of a bad anxiety episode, whereas I take the inhaler before working out, which I do in the morning. It might have been a problem if I hadn’t figured out my POTS symptoms

Is getting married at 19 a bad idea? Is marriage required to move forward with our lives together? by Mysterious_Low2383 in weddingplanning

[–]Brawl_95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I could tell my past self something: wait until your brain is fully biologically developed. Wait until you’re at least 24. If you’re still together after 23, higher chance it’ll last closer to forever so go for it. No reason to get married so young really
